Isn't this the same party that was 'strategizing' their base to vote Obama in the primary when they thought Hillary was the stronger candidate... oh the hypocrisy. An unenforceable 'honor' system ... kinda like their campaign promises.

This only reinforces my view that our political system has been taken over by psychopaths. The only reason they would need such a pledge is if a majority, or close to a majority, support Ron Paul and they are planning to Rig the election.

Because if the election was honest they wouldn't need to do such things.

I am a Virginian most likely voting Republican for the next Presidential election, but the GOP is shooting themselves in the foot here. The GOP can take their "Pledge" and shove it, and if they are wise, they will rescind this policy sooner rather than later.

It's an open primary state. In other open primary states the parties have sued to close their primary elections. I guess the wingnuts in VA are afraid of "judicial activists" so they'll completely violate the spirit of democratic elections instead.

This isn't as bad as I thought at first. It seems that they are just trying to limit the republican primary to actual republican voters. It's kind of a bassackwards way of doing it, but I don't see any problem with it...

What makes this a "loyalty oath"? Why didn't you report the exact text before using such an inflammatory phrase? Can't you back it up? More Dan Rather journalistic ethics?

"If this pledge isn’t legally binding, why bother?" Ideally, they're appealing to the spoilers' honesty, hoping that at bottom they have the integrity to not falsely sign even a non-binding statement. A bit of a compliment, actually. Cynically, if a person later appeared in a Democrat campaign ad, the Republicans could publish the pledge, which would be embarrassing. Which is what I suspect is your real objection.

"Somehow, I don’t think the Justice Dept. is going to go along with disenfranchising voters." Democrats and people who don't WANT to present IDs, anyway. White Republicans voters, not so much (see New Black Panthers in Philadelphia). But there's no Constitutional right to vote in a primary. It's a party thing and only determines the party's candidate, not who actually winds up in office.

"As an independent voter who has never voted a straight ticket in my life, after observing the Republicans in action this past year throughout the U.S., I will think long and hard before I ever vote for them again." Care to sign a sworn statement to the complete truth of that statement?

"I really like Huntsman, but the radicals in the Republican party will never consider him a viable candidate." He's even more of a RINO than Mitt. No wonder you like him.

"I’m thinking that Lincoln is spinning in his grave to see what his party has become." I'm thinking Lincoln would be even more appalled at today's Democrats. The Democrats of his time depicted him as an ape, didn't want to fight the war, wanted to leave the Union divided and let slavery continue. Great legacy.

Gingrich is on record saying he couldn't support Paul, so I guess Gingrich should be barred from voting.
