DES MOINES, Iowa – Hours before the Iowa caucuses begin, Texas Gov. Rick Perry compared the day to the start of one of the biggest annual sporting events: the Super Bowl.
“Game on today!” Perry told the crowd of 300 at an employee townhall at the Principal Financial Group in downtown Des Moines. “It’s just like the Super Bowl is starting now. I don’t get confused that this is a marathon. It’s going to go on for some time as we lay out our vision for America, as we talk about how to get this country back on track.”
During the question-and-answer period, Perry got one question about whether the government should be involved in regulation and then faced some radio silence when no one in the audience volunteered to ask a second question. To ease the tension, the Texas governor started humming the Jeopardy theme song until someone raised a hand with a query.
Mitt Romney spoke at the same venue on caucus day in 2008.
