Matthew Dowd: Susan G. Komen-Planned Parenthood Debate Shows ‘Poisonous Part of Democracy’

ABC
ABC News political analyst Matthew Dowd said that the debate this week over funding between the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood shows the “corrupt nature that’s happened in politics” is now impacting private groups.
“This is a corrupt, poisonous part of democracy at work,” Dowd said on the “This Week” roundtable of the backlash this week when the Susan G. Komen Foundation announced it was removing funding for mammogram screenings from Planned Parenthood – before reversing course after a vocal outcry.
“A private foundation can give and dispense money any way it wants,” Dowd added. “I think foundations should be able to make a decision, and if Planned Parenthood wants to go out and raise the money” they lost from the Komen Foundation, they can do so.
AOL Huffington Post Media president Arianna Huffington said the debate showed “social media at work” as supporters of Planned Parenthood galvanized support online.
“This was about women’s health. This was an attempt to politicize it,” Huffington said. “So the attempt to politicize this issue backfired, and people said this is not a left-right issue.”
George Will disputed that idea, saying “This is not about women’s health. This is about providing 300,000 abortions a year. Planned Parenthood cleverly cast this to say we are in the mammogram business. They’re not in the mammogram business.”
“All these people describing themselves as pro-choice said it is illegitimate to choose not to be involved in abortion,” Will added.
Will said the Obama administration’s requirement for Catholic hospitals and other institutions to provide insurance policies that cover contraception services was a greater threat.
Catholic churches protested that requirement at Sunday services last week, reading letters written by church leaders saying the policy infringed on religious freedom.
“On the political side, in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, particularly, there are lots of blue-collar Catholics who hear this as more bullying,” Will said.
Dowd, who serves on the board of a Catholic hospital in Austin, Texas, agreed that it was an issue of government overreach.
“I think people that run these institutions and are in these services think…why is the federal government doing this, when we’re providing all this care,” Dowd said. “Why is big government getting involved in our business, which we know what to do?”
“It’s a stunning display of irony when you look at all of this,” added conservative radio host Dana Loesch. “For instance, Komen is excoriated over their choice — the private charity to do what they want with their money. And here you have the government now saying that you don’t have a choice to be able to practice your religious liberty and these institutions have to comply with this particular mandate that goes against their freedom and liberty.”
But Huffington said it was about making contraception available to those who work at Catholic institutions, including non-Catholics who do not oppose contraception.
“The churches are not going to be affected,” Huffington said. “We’re talking about Catholic hospitals that employ a lot of non-Catholics.”

Joe Biden Recalls Death of Wife, Daughter
I was disappointed in George Will and other comments about protection of religious rights. Some Muslims in the US recently wanted to intact Shea law. Should it then be legal to kill a woman, cut of her ears of throw acid in her face as in other parts of the world. Any Religious law must comply with civil laws, and not be permitted to behave hateful..

The corruption is in the ignorance of believing that all donated monies will go to mammograms. Anyone ever seen the books of planned abor… err?? parenthoiod an alleged non-profit?

George Will is a liar. Planned Parenthood is not about abortions, as that is just 3% of their business. The bulk is providing low or no-cost exams, cancer screenings and education.
Nicole made good points in her comment. If we are going to allow religious belief to trump civil rights then we have to open the door to extremes of Sharia law.

Planned Parenthood does not do breast exams, mammograms or screenings, this is a fact.

An abortion is between a woman, her doctor, and her God. Leave me out of it. BTW, why are donations specifically intended for for breast cancer research going to planned parenthood?

If religion and its’ advocates want to influence social issues, then it has to face the consequences of how the social media is going to react to that influence. I’m proud that Americans who are not duped by the religious right have used their voice to combat the bigotry and evil that got the Koman charity foundation to rescind it PP contribution because of the zealots’ influence.

Charlie, as you aren’t a woman why are you insisting that you know the Planned Parenthood does or doesn’t do anything?
They do breast exams, cervical exams etc. I know, I’ve been there as a patient when I was younger. They are frequently the only place for medical care for poor people for miles around. Besides diagnosing cancer, they have saved countless lives by discovering medical conditions like diabetes in the course of exams.
Just to educate you a little, only 3% of their business is abortions, the rest is exams, screenings and education.

What does democracy have to do with it? Nothing. There is no true democracy in this country, in the first place.
The truth is…..republicans tried to cut off funding, because they would deny women’s rights, for totally religious reasons.
Then the charity found out how much they had to lose, by that action, in their donations, and they were forced to reverse themselves.
That’s the bottom line……keep on participating with Planned Parenthood, or give up a ton of donations!

Call them, they do not. I am speaking specifically about breasts. Not only when you call them, they also do not list them on their site. They will tell you where to go. Where did the catholic come from, wasn’t commenting on that stuff and don’t care. I am not religious. I am talking about Komen’s right to give however they please. They are private. They have the right to chose where their money goes for WHATEVER reason they want. Planned Parenthood is funded (2009) with 362m from the government.Just educate yourself a little? Condescending a bit are we? Jjust because I didn’t write a complete dissertation do not assume I know already that of which you “kindly” wanted to remind me.

Sure, Komen can donate the money where they want to once they have it. However…we who donate the money can choose to withdraw our support, both from them AND their corporate sponsors. Who says this is not democracy at work, or that it is poisonous?
I’ve given money in the past to Komen. So have many of my friends. I’ve bought Komen-branded products. Will I do so again? Probably not. I hadn’t realized how little of their money actually goes to any sort of cure or anything else.

Christians once said that slavery was good because it brought Jesus to the savages. Now they insist that their beliefs allow them to discriminate against workers in church owned secular businesses. Religion of all kinds seems to exist for little reason other than justification for bigotry.
Planned Parenthood spends 3% of it’s budget on abortion and associated counseling. The bigots would destroy the other 97% of their work because of their opposition to existing law in the US. Using that kind of ‘logic’ we should defund the Catholic Church because a percentage of their work results in the abuse of children by Catholic priests. Sound fair?
