Rick Santorum Labels Romney An ‘Elite’ And Obama A ‘Snob’
ABC News’ Michael Falcone reports:
TROY, Mich. — In his campaign stump speeches, Rick Santorum often deploys a famous Ronald Reagan line, saying that he is the candidate of “bold colors” not “pale pastels,” to show why he would offer the clearest contrast to President Obama.
On a chilly Saturday morning in Michigan, Santorum used some of those “bold colors” to paint Mitt Romney, his main rival in the primary here, as an elitist, inconsistent, liberal-in-Republican’s-clothing, unexciting candidate.
“Every time we’ve run a moderate, we’ve lost,” Santorum warned. “Every time we’ve run a conservative — a complete conservative on all the issues, I might add, national security, culture and economy — we’ve won.”
On Romney’s home turf, Santorum cast himself as the blue collar candidate in the race. He even highlighted the fact that his immigrant grandfather worked in Michigan for two years before leaving for the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania.
“I don’t come from the elite,” Santorum said. “I worked my way to the success that I have and I’m proud of it. Elites come up with phony ideologies and phony ideas to rob you of your freedom.”
At a forum sponsored by the conservative group, Americans For Prosperity, he took particular umbrage with Romney’s newly-announced tax plan, which would scale back deductions and exemptions for the richest Americans.
“I never thought that a Republican presidential candidate would adopt the verbiage of Occupy Wall Street,” Santorum said.
Santorum, who opposes all government bailouts, blasted Romney’s willingness to support the Wall Street bailout but not the automobile bailout.
“Why do you pick one and not the other?” he asked.
As he does everywhere he goes, Santorum pledged to be a “strong, consistent conservative.”
When it comes to Romney, however, Santorum warned: “what you see” is not “what you get.” Inviting the crowd to “imagine” what kind of candidate the former Massachusetts governor would be in a general election.
In a nearly one hour policy address Friday night in a Detroit suburb, Santorum focused largely on what he views as the failures of the Obama administration. At his Saturday morning speech to a ballroom full of conservative activists, the former Pennsylvania senator took aim at President Obama’s hope that every American will go to college.
“What a snob!” Santorum said.
“If you want big things to happen then you have to elect somebody and nominate somebody who can draw the clear contrast with President Obama,” he said, appealing to the audience not to nominate someone — Romney — whose “own party isn’t excited about campaigning for.”
Receiving a standing ovation at his last public campaign event in the state on Saturday before departing for Tennessee, he told voters: “You have an opportunity here in Michigan to shock the country.”

“What a snob!” Santorum said. HUH??? Didn’t Santorum go to college AND law school? Wasn’t that not HIS parents dream – that he succeed beyond the coal mines of his grandparents? In fact HI parents were VA Psychologist and a nurse – highly educated. FOOLLLL!!!!

Mr Santorum – You are so wrong!! What I see in YOU is what I would NOT want as the leader of our country. Every time that you speak your name goes further DOWN the list as my first choice to be our next president. Right now you are tied for last place. Care to go any further?

Rick Santorum is a fake, as Ron Paul said. He tries to play the blue collar role. Ask any Pennsylvanian how blue collar Rick Santorum is He’s almost as much blue collar as Mitt Romney is.

Yes, Rick Santorum has an excellent education. It is rarely mentioned that he has a doctorate in law and should he not get the nomination he is qualified to be on the Supreme Court. Obama is forever holding out carrots to people for votes. The idea that everyone should be able to go to college of course depends on whether they can afford it or are college material. There are lots of Americans who live well, never went to college, and have attained the American dream. Bill Gates comes to mind, although he is an Obama guy. The wealthiest Americans are, George Soros, Buffet, and God forbid you are wealthy and support conservative causes like the Koch brothers or Rupert Murdock. You may get called into a congressional committee on trumped up charges and humiliated for nothing. Obama IS a snob. He is only in office because zillionaires put him there–those high stakes rollers who want us to become Europe–falling populations, bankrupt social programs, hign unemployment–a level playing field in a radical secularist world.

So Obama’s a snob for wanting everyone to get to go to college, but Santorum’s not a snob for going to elite colleges and not wanting to help others go to them too?

If we’re talking about a law education as a pre-requisite to being President, it seems we have a President with an excellent one. He was president of the Harvard law review.

What ever happened to the good old days when women were forced to make baby after baby after baby until they died so their husbands could get a new model and make that one pump out the babies. You can’t. Not date rape, not slipping a micky, not many subtle ways a man takes the choice away from the women and then she HAS to make a baby and birth it against her will????? really?? NOBODY should be allowed to even voice an opinion on birth unless they take a watermelon and shove it ALL THE WAY UP their hole and INTO their body REAL SLOW, say, 6 – 10 hours, the length of an average birth….. you do that, then let’s talk about whether you think you have the right to force women to make babies and birth them against their will. Santorum is a women hater, absolutely. He’s as good as locking in another 4 years for Obama. Let him win the nominee!!!!! Let the republicans see half the country, all the women, bury him in the dirt!

Reagan was NOT a conservative on ANY issue! racket up debt, his son was a gay ballet dancer, he was FOR nnuclear nonproliferation, he RAISED taxes 7 of his 8 years in office, he nearly tripled the federal deficit, he blew up the size of government, unemployment soared over 10% after his ‘tax cut to create jobs”, he did next to nothing to stop abortion, he gave amnesty to illegal immigrants….do tell…what exactly, was ‘conservative’ about Reagan??????? you like to SAY he was, but the republican party has moved SOOOOO far to the right, what you thought was right, (Reagan) is now actually, liberal.

We need whoever wins to Start Protecting American Jobs and do whatever it takes to bring back the jobs they let go. They’ve got to give us somebody who will stand up for the American people. We need to bring manufacturing back to the United States of America and both parties are ignoring tariffs as a way to level the playing field, raise money and bring jobs back home. Let’s guess why. Hum, could it be that our so called leaders (political leaders) are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.
We may have to pay a bit more for products made here in the USA by US citizens, but at least we’ll still have jobs and a future for our children.
The bottom line is that “Our Government” has to protect American industry and the jobs that those industries provide. If they do that, the rest will take care of itself.
Most US Citizens biggest concern is about being able to earn a living, their children’s future and the future of our country.

The elephant in the room for Santorum: he is a strong Union advocate just like Obama. Unions ran the manufacturing off shore by excessive demands and that is where it will stay until the unions go away. Santorum is an Obama with religion.

Saturday night. Scenario in America: 300 million Americans. They go to bed. A thousand non married teenager couples in every state enjoy sex. Pregnancy takes place. The males are the irresponsible type, or it is simply a one night stand. So, fifty thousand not wanted babies are born in America without responsible fathers. These single mothers, too young to have kids, have to drop from High School in order to raise those kids with minimum wages, salaries. They might end up joining the dole system or welfares recipients, so hated by the Republicans. Then, eighteen years later: military age. Fifty thousand babies equal 8 divisions in the Armed forces. They also become a gigantic pool of cheap factory labor, or better yet. Excellent customer for the now corporative private prisons where prisoners are customers, meaning they represent profits. They could turn into drug dealers, drug users or criminals. They might become also welfare recipients, which will be used in future Republican speeches about how expensive this entitlement have become and how these lazy people should find jobs. NOW, DO YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WHY REPUBLICANS ARE AGAINTS ABORTION AND LOVE TO FIGHT IT.? IT’S A VERY LUCRATIVE SUPER BUSINESS!!!

My father was the child of immigrant parents and he didn’t go to college becaues he had no opportunity . He never felt people who went to college were snobs, he felt they were LUCKY! It was MANDATORY that we all go to college, and we did, and we all make much much much more than he did. He also insisted we go for things that make money. no art amjors i nour family! All medicine and sciences. He didn’t go to college because that was the BEST he could do!!!!!! He wasn’t proud of not going to college!!!! He didn’t feel inferior either, he felt he didn’t have any opportunity and he made sure his kids did BETTER. Santorum wants to make people proud of not going to college. Gee, too bad all the jobs of the future require higher learning. One of our biggest problems in this nation is that the jobs that are in demand require higher education and the masses of unemployed are not qualified. Nice to know Santorum thinks college opportunity is NOT what he supports. could this guy possibly get anymore unattractive????

Cuz it takes a ‘super genius’ like obama to drive a nation $$$ 5 trillion more in debt.—–that spending helped end the recession, save the auto industry, and save the banking system. Bush spent us in to debt launching two wars for nothing, that he ran into the ground, and killing the economy. THere is wreckless spending that does nothing, like Bush, and then there is investment that does good, and that is what Obama did. Were it not for Obama, we’d have fallen into a Depression that we would EASILY still be in right now. Period. So if you’re upset about the spending, then I guess you wanted the Depression. Well, dont mind us if we do not share your opinion. Obama did well with the money he invested in saving the economy. Makes me trust him MORE with the future of the country, thank you very much ,and yes, actually, it took brains to do what he did.

One of our biggest problems in this nation is that the jobs that are in demand require higher education and the masses of unemployed are not qualified. —–that’s so true. I’m in engineering and we are haggling with green cards and visas and giving out signing bonuses because we CAN NOT fill positions…..meanwhile folks complain there are no jobs. really????? no no no. there are PLENTY of jobs. YOU are just not qualified!!!!!!! There is a HUGE imbalance in the labor force NOT being qualified for the jobs that are out there….

Can you imagine how easy it will be to own Santorum in a debate. I’d LOVE to be up there asking him to explain himself on this. Explain how offering college opportunity is a bad thing???? when oure labor force cannot fill the positions we DO have, due to lack of eduation, HOW is that good??? He wants to do MORE of that??? HOW is that good for the country? Shall we ship out all the engineering job as well, because we dont have engineers, and we dont have biological researchers, etc????? so, an unskilled uneducated labor force is good???? So you’ll make sure you do NOT offer opportunity. ok. Why would anyone want LESS opportunity? At a time when our class mobility has never been lower, you want to give LESS opportunity, or …just explain how opportunity is a bad thing???? so, the GI bill after WWII must have been a bad thing, huh? WOw. What a jerk. How EASY is it going to be to own him in a debate!! He’s like Newt, hanging himself.

I’m sorry, but whenever I hear this elitist caricature about Obama being bandied around by Republicans it makes my blood boil.
Obama is no more elitist then Rick Santorum, let alone the rest of the GOP. His background wasn’t exactly privileged (unlike say, R-money), and he definitely had to work hard for every thing he’s achieved. Even if you still think there may be some affirmative action at play, the fact is that Obama wasn’t born with the best cards in hand and that he’s gotten where he is today because he like you, Santorum, HAD TO WORK FOR IT.
So just because he went to an Ivy League university, he’s elitist? What does that make Romney and Bush then, both Ivy Leaguers and born to rich families?
Now wanting to go to college is elitist. Wow. I can’t stand this sneering conservative disdain towards education that seems to wear ignorance almost as a badge of honor. Whatever happened?! It is perfectly possible to be WELL EDUCATED and still hold conservative ideas. Think Goldwater for instance.
This kind of nonsense spewed by Santorum only ruins the proper discourse between the left and right, both of whom DO have valid ideas.

@ANONYMOUS: You said “The idea that everyone should be able to go to college of course depends on whether they can afford it or are college material.”
Clearly, you’ve missed the entire point. Obama is saying that ANY child that wishes to go to college should be able to. He’s trying to make it affordable for everyone that wants to. He’s not saying, like Snitorum would love to portray, that everyone must go and that college is for everyone. College and other after HS training programs are what he’s promoting and to make them affordable for everyone that wants them.
