MONROE, Mich. - Mitt Romney says he is undaunted by polls that show him trailing in Michigan, and says he's just fine being "the underdog."

"It's always a good thing to be seen as the underdog, to be fighting hard," Romney said In an interview with WMMT television in Grand Rapids Tuesday night.  "Never take anything for granted, work very hard, I'll outwork everyone else in this race, point out the distinctions and records and in the final analysis I want a son of Michigan to be the next president."

Several polls have shows former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum leading Romney in his home state, suddenly calling into question what had been a presumed win for the Romney campaign.

"The polls go up and down. I go back a while, Donald Trump, Michele Bachman, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, in each case I ended up doing pretty well in the final analysis," said Romney in the interview .

"My guess is by the time people really focus on the different candidates, I'll get a good send off in Michigan," he added.
