So this just shows you how little this president knows about scripture. Obama uses part of Luke 12:48" Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required" to say those that are wealthy have a greater responsibility to those who don't. Now the bible doesn't qualify how rich a person is when it comes to taking care of the sick and hungry. A much better scripture would be Matthew 25:40 "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." This is the call for everyone no matter what their financial situation. The burden is on all believers and it isn't something to be mandated by the government.

So, what does the passage in Luke 12:48 the President quoted actually mean? Well, Jesus was talking directly to his disciples. Jesus tells his disciples a parable about a servant who is looking over the household until the master returns. It also talks about the severe punishment that would come from the master for abusing the position he has been given. Peter then asks Jesus if he is referring to the disciples or to everyone. Jesus replies, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?" Jesus is talking about the people that God calls into authority over the church "household" (i.e. the disciples, pastors, missionaries, etc.) This is not limited to just those with an official title. If you read the verses before (which I'm sure our leader did) in verses 46 & 47 Jesus tells of how the servant that knew his masters will and still disobeyed would be beaten more harshly than the servant who was ignorant to the master's will. It does not however excuse ignorance but it does show contempt for those who willfully disobey.

And when Jesus says that the manager is there to give them their portion of food at the proper time he is not talking about actual food. The manager is watching for the return of the master, for us that is the return of Jesus. The manager is in charge of feeding the household, for us that is preaching the gospel and preparing us and the church (household) for Christ's return.

So what? this verse isn't really about rich people? Well how many rich disciples where there? Well I guess Judas died with a bag full of gold. Since he was given much (gold) I suppose he would have been the only disciple who God would have expected to take care of the poor if he hand't hung himself first. If only he had our very spiritual leader there to tell him just what Jesus was talking about.

in response to Todd- Nobody is talking about tax breaks for millionaires, thast is a term used by the demagouges to divide the country. This Warren Buffet ? Obama fiasco about his secretary paying less in taxes than he does is a big lie. He is taxed differently because his earnings are on money that was already taxed before it was invested as capital gains. What is a fair tax rate for anyone? is it fair that some people pay half of their income already while others pay nothing? Who are you to say how much money someone else should give in taxes? The government should not get more money, because all it does is create a bigger government that takes more freedom from us. Taking more money from the people will not solve any problems, just create more. Obama spent far more money on his bogus stimulus plan - that did nothing - than we spent on any wars in the last ten years. If you think taking more tax money from any class does anything to help anyone - you need to wake up and smell the coffee. The only thing that will help this country is to get government under control and make the lords in Washington live withing their means - like the rest of us have to. Unlike you - some of us want to live in a free country with a limited government - which is what our Constitution says our country should be. If you want to be a willing slave to the government - go to a different country, there are several where this type of life already exists, but don't try to create that type of country here.

In my profession, I see the effects of government programs and government spending every day. Taking more money from people and giving it to the government will do nothing to help anyone - all it will do is create more fraud, more abuse, and more waste. The government does not and has never done anything that cannot be done more efficiently and effectively by the private sector. The only people that are in favor of higher taxes are the leakers that constantly have their hands out and the corrupt officials that buy votes with our tax dollars. Why are so many of you jealous of rich people? Wouldn't you like to be rich someday? i would. Taking more money from the rich will not do anything to benefit you in any way, it won't make you rich. a lot of "millionaires" that run small businesses file their taxes as people, because they are not incorporated (they also are not millionaires in reality, only on paper). taking more from them will take away from their businesses and hurt employment, but this is something that Obama, and a lot of you, don't understand - no wonder he never released his grades - based on what he demonstrates that he knows, they are propbably pretty low. P.S. In biblical times, the eye of a needle was a small door inside of a larger door to the city, which prevented large hordes from entering all at once. It was not impossible for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, but very difficult - so Christ did not say it was impossible for a rich person to enter heaven - which is probably what a lot of you think he said.

It is very easy from reading these comments to tell who lives their religion and who just attends services, perhaps prays but doesn't really follow the very clear message within.
"It would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven."
It can't be any clearer than that. It is a very strong statement for ending tax breaks for millionaires. President Obama is correct to bring this to the attention of the public.
Our country needs help to pay off the two wars we have been involved in, the need to borrow because of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and to pay for all the additional expenses of the recent banking industry greed induced almost-Depression. For the very rich to not see it as their duty to help, but instead want the poor and middle-class to give up necessities so the wealthy can continue to grow their wealth at the same fast pace, is sinful.

Jesus would not be an elected official and to say he would do this or do that is illogical. We live in two worlds, the material and the spirit. One affects the other, it's a personal decision which one you prioritize in your life. The Bible clearly says that the spirit is eternal while the material is finite. Each person shapes their spiritual life by what they do in their material life. We can throw Jesus' name around all we want but unless we look into our own selves it'll do no good. Jesus already accomplished his purpose in the material world, he will next do the same in the spiritual world. No one knows when that will be but we should all be prepared. The Bible says you will be judged on what you did in your life, not your government.

No, Jesus was a Republican right wing money speculator who believed he should be taxed at a far lower rate than the poor and the working stiffs who are ruining the country for the rich and that if everybody but the rich would just shut up and work for whatever we want to pay them and let us outsource the jobs to sweat shops around the world, then life would be a far better place.

Obama was a practicing Muslim for too long - apparently he does not know the teachings of Christ. Chist was the Son of God, and God gave us the following rules: Thou Shalt not Steal, Thou Shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods, Obama is doing both. Christ would not support higher taxes - he would support taxpayers being charitable - but giving directly to charities, not to an oppressive government that takes money from its citizens to forward its own designs and serve its own needs and wants. Giving more money to the government is not virtuous or honorable because the government is not efficient and it does not distribute money to the needy, it is rampant with fraud and abuse and money is given out as political paybacks. Also, God only asked for 10% of your income in thanks for all he has given - He would never believe any human entity or government body is deserving of more than what we owe to God - because they aren't.

Jesus was a communist. He believed all virtue flows from big government. When He said love thy neighbor he meant tax thy neighbor. Coerce thy neighbor into doing what you think is right.
