Santorum Says ‘We’re Winning’, Ann Romney and Barbara Bush Raise Eyebrows, AIPAC Report (PM NOTE)

Mar 5, 2012 6:25pm

Santorum Says He’s Winning (no matter what the votes say) – “We’re winning,” Santorum said in an interview with ABC News’ Jonathan Karl. “Whether we end up with the most votes or not [in Ohio], we’re winning.” More from Karl – Santorum scoffed at suggestions by Romney’s political director that it will soon be mathematically impossible for Santorum to win a majority of Republican delegates needed to capture the nomination. “How pathetic is that?” Santorum said. “How pathetic is a campaign that keeps saying, ‘we’re inevitable’? About 10 percent of the delegates have been allocated and they are out there saying, ‘Oh he can’t win.’ It’s just pathetic.” – http://abcn.ws/xCMBkf

Counter-programming – Presidential Presser: Obama will hold a press conference tomorrow. Pure coincidence that this one – his first in three months – is on the same day as 10 Republican nominee elections. http://abcn.ws/z7tj2u

Apology Defended – Martha Raddatz – On the Ground in Afghanistan with Gen. John Allen – - In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Allen dismissed criticism in the U.S. over the apologies. “Why wouldn’t we [apologize]?” the general asked. “This is the central word of God for them. Why wouldn’t we? We didn’t do it on purpose but we should apologize and we did.” Watch World News with Diane Sawyer for More – http://abcn.ws/x9qdrK

Matt Dowd’s Prediction Differs from Santorum – “No matter how all the states tomorrow finish in voting preference, it will be readily apparent on Wednesday morning that the delegate math does not allow any candidate other than Romney to get to the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination.” Dowd says the result will be a sort of bounty program – “Much like the former defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, Gregg Williams, who paid players a bounty to take out key players from opposing teams, the strategy of Romney’s opponents and their super PACs will be to try to take him out and beat him up by June.” http://abcn.ws/ycmKfM

Don’t Expect a Super Tuesday KO – Matt Jaffe: “With Super Tuesday 2012 featuring fewer than half as many states as the 2008 version – and all 10 states allocating delegates using some type of proportional system – the day is simply a little less super this time around. And even though Mitt Romney would love to score the type of knock-out blow that McCain delivered to him, the best the former Massachusetts governor can realistically hope for is to land a couple of painful punches that hurt key rival Rick Santorum so badly that he will be able to end the fight for good in the coming weeks.  http://abcn.ws/w6uofG

No VA Write-Ins – Highlighting the weirdness of ballot access in this country and the difficulty of mounting a presidential primary campaign, both Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have homes in Fairfax County, Virginia, but neither of their names will appear on the Virginia primary ballot there tomorrow.
