This has become a sad racial divide. Having lived in the southeastern United States for 14 years as an immigrant from Colombia I have seen quite a bit of close-mindedness and ignorance combined with some fear of latinos and even blacks who have all the rights of citizenship from birth. Discrimination is a very old problem and one we must fight to overcome. It is not a matter of race. Each person has incredible potential and regardless of race we all can meaningfully contribute to making this a better and stronger country. I love the United States as much, if not more, than I love Colombia. This is the country where I was given an opportunity to use my potential to become a physician (with over $150000 in loans and no free ride); this is the country where I met my wife and where my daughter was born, and this is the country where people from all creeds and races have found a safe haven where they can escape the problems they face in their home lands (terrorism, poverty, threats, etc). I am telling you from experience that leaving it all behind is not easy and there is always a driving force behind moving to a different country with a different language and especially if one does not feel welcomed. Entering the country illegally and getting a job when not authorized are against the law, but for those not too obtusely minded, it may be justifiable under some circumstances and to some extent if doing so does not directly affect anyone in this country. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of illegal immigrants (from many origins) working here, but as mentioned in many posts these jobs are looked down upon by most people and nobody else seems to want them. I see people begging for money in the street and it upsets me because they appear healthy and I am sure they could legally work, but for some reason they are not. I see Hispanic immigrants waiting on the street to be picked up by contractors for construction or various other gigs, but they are trying to make it day by day and seldom do they get assistance from the government because they don't qualify by virtue of their immigration status.
Now the really important point. THEY made a mistake and came to this country illegally and brought their young kids with them. Some of these kids came to this country when they were 3 years old or younger and have no recollection of the land they abandoned and have no reasonable way of making it back there and in some cases they have younger siblings that are US born and therefore are citizens. Trying to deport illegal parents of US citizens becomes a really big problem and there is no right way to proceed here (when giving serious objective consideration to the matter and isolating our emotions about the issue). The people that president Obama is talking about are those people who really had no guilt in coming to this country and I know many would say that they should pay for their parents' mistakes, but then in that case how many people would have to be imprisoned for the mere fact that their parents were criminals? Our real enemy in all honesty is technology. We have made people almost obsolete and we have an increasing number of automated systems that move people out of their jobs. These things make our lives easier but it comes at the expense of someone's job. Many supermarkets have self checkout lanes; these machines obviate the need for cashiers (a job that can be done without much educational background). Outsourcing is another huge issue, but that is an entirely different conversation. Creating employment opportunities should be our goal as a nation to maintain our position in the global economy, but let's stop pointing fingers to these poor people who were brought here by their parents and have been waiting for a chance to gain an identity and be counted.

Asians are here legally, how wonderful to paint an entire ethnicity with one brush. Makes dealing with prejudiced remarks much easier for you. I guess you forgot about the Golden Venture, you know that ship that landed in Long Island, and all the Chinese refugees jumped off scampering before the police got there? What about all the Chinese university applicants who fake applications and have others write their essays?
I think before you start lumping people together you should do a bit more research. Which is why when people make blanket statements, they end up looking foolish....

MyTakeOnThis61 | June 20, 2012, 9:09 am -- I don't care about Romney or Obama, I care about a permanent solution that only Congress can create, one that brings me to a permanent fix and one that doesn't deport my family. Temporarily skirting the law doesn't provide a solution to my situation and 800,000 more similar situations.

Asians are now the largest group of immigrants. They are well educated and have the skills which employers in this country desire. Plus, they are here legally. Hopefully, they will not be swayed by a politician who will promise them the world for their vote regardless if the politician really cares about their lives ("not" is the correct answer). I wish the folks from California would express their opinion as to why their state is now bankrupt with little hope on the horizon...all those good paying jobs continue their march to the red states.

"...For all you fools jumping up and down and have that tingling sensation all up and down your legs, what illegal would be so stupid as to raise their hand and apply for this temporary exception knowing full well the executive order would be tossed come January when Obama is likely replaced with Romney..."

...and you know this how? Mr. Romney has not and will not commit to repealing this. So, what are you saying? That (A) he is purposely being evasive in an attempt to still gather the Hispanic/Latino vote and if elected repeal President Obama's Executive Order. Or, (B) he is purposely being evasive in an attempt to maintain the support of his base and if elected will not repeal President Obama's Executive Order. Which is it?

GOVERNMENT IS NOT A CORPORATION AND NOT RUN LIKE ONE. THE MEDIA has refused to challenge Romney’s false assumption that as former businessman he is best suited to run America’s government than a President with no business background. Yet, there is little evidence to support Romney’s assumption, and the compromised media still happily go along. While some businessmen have done well as President, there is little to support the notion that businessmen generally make the best Presidents. Bush, and especially Cheney, had ample business experience. Look what mess they made in office (even Bolton says as much): they ran a buoyant, surplus-rich economy into the ground triggering the near collapse of the US and world economy! Remember Hoover, the Great Depression and “Hooverville.” On the other hand, look at the historical achievements of Presidents with no business experience: Lincoln, FDR, and more recently Clinton who took the country to the path of robust prosperity. Often, businessmen when they happen to become Presidents, tend to follow a model in which they increase their personal tax advantage, sell off chunks of major government assets to the private sector at bargain prices (usually to their supporters), lay off a lot of people (who then become wards of the state) and squander the nation’s advantage in foreign adventurism in hope of fostering an image of strength in international politics. This is an old trick. During pre-colonial era in Africa, leaders of major cosmopolitan European powers sat in a room to give themselves territories they never visited or known well. That is how businessmen do things. Again, look at the mess they made in Africa and Asia. Government is not a corporation, and should never be run as one. Business is all about profit; government is about the common good! Therefore, there are many things government do that business is not suited or willing to do. Partly for that reason, we do not elect our President based on the economy alone (a self-serving mantra for Romney and many Republicans). We also want a President that has character, empathy, one that cares about the rights and suffering of others. Washington Post Moraniss reveals in his biographical installments on Obama and Romney that even as a Mormon preacher in Paris, Romney was unable to connect with people and made few converts. We want a President that is smart about foreign policy. We want a President that we can trust, not one who is trigger-happy. We want a President that cares about all the people not just a few (Romney, without equivocation, embraces the Ryan Budget, a budget that cuddles the rich and persecutes the poor and middle class). Romney and Ryan pity the rich and powerful and “forgot the dying birds.” We want a President that tells the truth not lie when it is convenient (As a Washington Post Columnist pointed out, lying for Romney is "like a business plan." Talk about character!). While we believe that corporations are not people, we as well believe that a President should not run government like a corporation, or the people suffer!

RyanC | June 20, 2012, 8:02 am -- All I am saying is that I don't want to turn-in my family and if I apply for a work permit, I'm taking a big chance doing that. Everyone will be taking a chance unless Obama also grants an exception to my illegal parents, uncle and aunts that live with us. If he does that then I'll change my mind about Mr. Obama and tell all my amigos to vote for him!
