Burn the Berets, the Veep Hot Zone, Did Mitt Break the Law? (PM Note)

Burn the Olympic Berets and Blazers - Harry Reid and others go to town on the 'Made in China' Olympic Uniforms - http://abcn.ws/Mnn1FD

Changing the subject from our concentration today on when exactly we left Bain was this email from Mitt's top guy -

Inbox - From Matt Rhoades - "Mitt's VP - We're getting ready to share some exciting news. Sometime between now and the Republican convention, Mitt will be announcing his choice for VP. Know what's even more exciting? Every week until the VP announcement is made, one lucky supporter will win the chance to meet Mitt and his choice for VP."

Our Question: Will the lucky raffle winner know they're meeting the VP? Or would the meeting come later with all the winners from all the weeks? We're envisioning Mitt Romney along with the VP candidate in a Major League mascot uniform to protect their identity.

The Hot Zone?

20 years ago last Monday, Clinton picked Gore 24 years ago tomorrow, Dukakis picked Bentsen 8 years ago last Friday, Kerry picked Edwards

Most recently it seems to have veered into later July and August - But here's Gregory Simmons oulay of every pick since Bush 41 and Dan Quayle on August 16th of 1988 - that was day 2 of the Republican convention - http://abcn.ws/LiFoO8

Veepstakes - Jon Karl has rejiggered his VP race ratings - It's now a top tier of two: Portman and Pawlenty. Rubio has clawed his way back into contention even though he hasn't been with Romney since that campaign appearance in Pennsylvania. And we're ever mindful of Ann Romney's suggestion that they're seriously considering a woman. All that and who was dropped from the list (and why) is here (along with vital stats for candidates, when they were last with Romney and what they've said about their chances) - is here http://abcn.ws/PPIScA

Did Mitt Romney Break the Law? - Questions about Mitt Romney's time at Bain Capital have suddenly spiraled into a bigger question that President Obama's campaign is stoking: Did the candidate commit a crime by making false statements on SEC forms? (Walshe and Negrin) - http://abcn.ws/NCTyZB

The huge caveat - There's no evidence that Romney had a role in business meetings at Bain Capital, the private-equity firm he started, in the years after he formally left to run the Olympics. But a Boston Globe report today said Romney remained in charge at Bain for three years longer than he has said. Romney originally said he left in 1999, though the SEC documents list him as the "sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president" until 2002. CNN unearthed a similarly worded state document.

The Obama campaign seized on the report and suggested that Romney broke the law by not being truthful on the forms, if he truly left the company in 1999. Stephanie Cutter, a deputy campaign manager, said Romney either misrepresented his position to the SEC, or he misrepresented his position to the public. The first one is a felony.

The Romney Camp came out swinging on the charge… it was more of an insinuation. Matt Rhoades called it reckless. http://abcn.ws/NCTyZB

Dick Cheney Hosts Romney at Jackson Hole Fundraiser - Mitt Romney is heading to Jackson Hole, Wyo., today for another high-dollar fundraiser. But this isn't just with Wall Street executives or those vying to be his running mate. http://abcn.ws/POrIMx (Shushannah Walshe)

Wealthy Republicans Flock to Romney Fundraiser at Cheney's Wyoming Retreat - Mitt Romney is heading to Jackson Hole, Wyo., today for another high-dollar fundraiser. And rather than having prospective VP's flocking about, he's being hosted by a former VP, Dick Cheney (and wife Lynn). It's the first time the two will appear together in public. http://abcn.ws/PPQr39 (Shushannah Walshe)

Biden to NAACP - "Folks, there's a lot more to say, but this is preaching to the choir," They booed when he wrapped things up. http://abcn.ws/MmTs4z (Devin Dwyer)

Ron Paul Faces Long Odds in Last Stand - Paul supporters are organizing for the Nebraska state GOP convention on Saturday, which could give the libertarian Republican candidate enough support to grant him a 15-minute speech at the party's August convention in Tampa. Under RNC bylaws, Paul will qualify as a candidate for the nomination in Tampa-and be afforded a speech at the convention-if he can demonstrate plurality support among delegates in five states. Paul controls a plurality in Iowa, Minnesota, and Maine, and he could meet that mark in the still-disputed Louisiana delegation. http://abcn.ws/Lcg2wQ (Chris Good)

Happy Anniversary to Scott Brown AND Liz Warren - Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown and his Democratic challenger, Elizabeth Warren, have something in common: their wedding anniversaries. Both candidates celebrate their respective anniversaries today, June 12. http://abcn.ws/Odle3C (Elizabeth Hartfield)

Erskine Bowles: 'We Are Going Over the Fiscal Cliff' - Three of the country's most prominent minds on U.S. budgetary problems issued a stark warning to lawmakers today as Congress approaches what many have called a "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts that are set to take effect Jan. 1. http://abcn.ws/N9JY1V (Amy Bingham)

Mitt the Jokester: Romney's Hits and Misses - GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has tried to break the ice or lighten the mood with a joke many a time - and really, he is successful more often than not. Moreover, his jokes aren't a new strategy - this buttoned-up businessman has had his moments on the campaign trail throughout the years. http://abcn.ws/NPJ9Zd (Meghan Kiesel)

Romney Camp Hits Obama on Defense Cuts Made By Congressional Deal - The Romney campaign blasted the president Thursday for looming cuts to defense spending. But they failed to mention - until they were reminded - that the cuts are required by last summer's congressional deal to cut spending in exchange for increasing the federal debt ceiling. http://abcn.ws/Mksil0 (Walshe)

Perry to Campaign for Romney in Nevada - Texas Gov. Rick Perry will make his first campaign appearance on behalf of Mitt Romney Friday in Nevada, ABC News has learned. http://abcn.ws/LbEiit (Arlette Saenz)
