Obama's comment makes perfect sense. First of all without people you would not have a business.Did you not need to go to city hall to get your business license? You may or not have asked a bank for loan? Did you not ask a carpenter to build your store or ask some printer to make advertisement? The list is endless That is what President Obama meant. If he ACTUALLY meant the "roads and bridges," he would have said "those." There's no way around it... his meaning is clear. Beautifully worded, Sally.

If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." Many Obama supporters say that "You didn't build that" refers to "roads and bridges". If that is correct, Mr. Obama would have said, "You didn't build THOSE", since "roads and bridges" is plural. Since he said "You didn't build THAT" and "Somebody else made THAT happen, "that" refers to the singular "business". There's no "syntax" (word order) problem here - There is no way by reordering the words that you can get a different meaning. Obama said exactly what he meant to say. He had buyer's remorse only after realizing what a hell storm he raised and how many Americans he alienated. In real life (other than poetry, metaphors, and some art, we always take people at their word, not what we think they meant. Why shouldn't we believe exactly what Obama said? It was a written speech, for goodness sake! It was planned - written by his speechwriters who know exactly what he wold say. And he repeated the same idea at least three times in this section, and many more times throughout the speech, in different ways -- condescension for people who beyond all odds, work hard and achieve something great by their own blood, sweat and tears. These are small businesses that provide JOBS and pay TAXES in this disastrous economy - Why punish them?? It's no secret that Obama harbors Marxist views - he says this plainly in his book "Dreams from my Father". And he demonstrates this belief in this and many other speeches - where he discusses the evils of inequity and wealth (though he himself is wealthy), and his goal to "spread the wealth around", as he told Joe the Plumber in 2008. Obama is an open book, if you just open your eyes and ears. And BTW, the Internet was not invented by the government so companies could make money from it. Rather, like many technological advances -- like GPS, and the fax machine in WWII -- it was developed for use on the battlefield. Only later were these inventions brought into mass use in the private sector. OK- Let’s look at the three sentences:

It's nonsensical to state that the president doesn't grasp that people who started businesses...started them. He's not contesting that they built their businesses...but trying to stress that the infrastructure and surrounding milieu directly contributed to an environment where something like a small business come to be, and even flourish. You're not going to sell much of anything without plumbing, electricity, transit systems, public services, schools, etc. Pinning so much negativity to one comment is hard to see, when the entire rest of the speech elucidates completely what his point was. It's not spin. It's reality. Re-read the whole transcript of the speech with an open mind, and tell me you REALLY think he is aiming to trivialize the importance of the small business owner. It's not about Republicans and Democrats. It's about common sense. Jumping on the soundbite bandwagon is nifty, but it really doesn't get the job that needs to be done, done. Yes, teachers teach us, parents support us, friends encourage us, carpenters, electricians, roofers, and bankers etc.. all contribute to the fabric of our environment and society. BUT, how an individual uses the knowlege, support, encouragement, laborers, bankers, etc... determines the outcome. You, and only you make the choice of how to use the knowledge and tools set in front of you. I believe quite a few of you are missing the point. To get through school, we need the teachers, to build credit, we need the banks, to purchase a home, we need people to build them. We are all in this together and we should be looking out for our neighbors and the Democrats do. We all fall on hard times, it would be nice to know there is help during those times and not left in the cold on our own and the Republicans have done. Thus a collective. I don't care how talented you are no one in in America gets anywhere without a helping hand. The utter closed minded fanatical hatred and vitriol of a mind made up is the biggest factor in ineffective communication and opportunity to pull together.
