Christie is just talking about the voters who are shallow and who only pay attention at the end of the campaign. It IS important to the educated middle who do their homework.

There certainly were a lot of people that thought McCain would have been a decent President, but were seriously concerned about anything happening to him, and having Sarah Palin lead the country.

It does make a difference. Maybe not for the core party followers, but for swing voters.
