Return the Submarine force back to the correct size of the force to handle all the extra missions the surface fleet cant handle. Second, if you have not serviced in the service go join and learn what live is actually like. Veterans know and understand how tough life is for the marine, but during operations at sea all units both surface and submairnes have controls to stop this from happening. Submarines always get the blame but is that really what actually happened. Less than .05% of the people graduating from High School now in the United States of American schools qualify to service. Less than .05% of servicing members qualify to service in the silent service. Those service member are some of the finest members of our educated society. Surface Fleet are great but not quite as special. First enlarge the Navy to give the crews more time between deployments. PD = periscope depth, SVP = sound velocity profile (a negative one causes sound to bend downward), a backing bell means to order the engines into reverse (the term 'bell' is from the sound the engine order telegraph makes when you change the position of it). Baffles are the area of the sonar sphere that is blocked by the hull of the submarine where the submarine can't hear, clearing baffles means maneuvering the submarine so that the crew can monitor the area that was blocked for any contacts and determine if any contacts present a hazard to the submarine. A dozen (or more) different factors could have contributed to this incident. @D MAYEDA, I used that standard Navy terminology to make a point of the fact that many of the commenters here really don’t know what they are talking about. George W. Bush lives in Texas so this collision had to be Bush’s fault. Not only that but some of the sailors on those ships may have been in the Navy while Bush was Commander in Chief and George HW was in the Navy during WW2. Any way you look at it, this was Bush’s fault. The USS San Jacinto was named after the final battle in the war for Texas independence from Mexico. George W. Wouldn't be surprised if one of them carried "special" ordinance. This guy has four vertical launch tubes in the bow.

Tore a 30 foot hole open in the bow. You can even look up the pictures on the internet. She steamed back to Norfolk, was reworked and I and my squadron deployed on it for the 87-88 Med Cruise and we beat the crap out of it again in high seas and busted up an elevator, a jet engine test cell, and a bunch of other stuff. We also shot an old Oldsmobile Cutlass off the ship. I wonder if anyone will ever find it and wonder how it got way out there in the Atlantic?
