‘God Only Knows’: Boehner Describes How to Avoid Fiscal Cliff

Speaker of the House John Boehner bluntly acknowledged Friday morning he did not have the votes to pass his “Plan B” and said the only real solution is a broad agreement to cut spending and reform the tax code. Then he added these words:

“How we get there, God only knows.”

That about sums up the whole “fiscal cliff” situation after a chaotic Thursday night when Republicans had to abandon “Plan B” – their proposal to raise taxes only on people making more than $1 million.

Boehner said he is not giving up on talks to pursue a bipartisan agreement with the President, who wants taxes to be raised on people making more than $250,000. But Boehner made it clear nothing is going on right now.  Instead he said it was up to Senate Democrats and the White House to make the next move.

Read more  about “Plan B” and the dramatic action in the House on Thursday.

Ball is in your court, obama!!! Let’s see how much spending you will cut.

No Perplexed, the Speaker is herding a broken coalition. Why doesn’t he simply allow President Obama’s proposal for a vote – let Republicans and Democrats vote yea or nay.

Actually the ball is sitting moldering over in the Republicans’ court with all of them staring at it and arguing among themselves unable to agree on anything. The Republicans are obstructionist even with each other.

Obama never wanted to avoid the fiscal cliff, his plan has always been to hike everyone’s taxes!
This way, he hopes to blame the GOP for the tax hikes Obama will get on all Americans, Obama mostly targeted the middle class because thats where most of the money is!!!!!

No need for the President to blame them – they’ve done that themselves. The Republicans are busy fighting among themselves and getting us nowhere.

I have warned everyone for months that Obama was planning to hammer the middle class with huge tax hikes, now we see I was right!!! Obama never really wanted a balanced compromise deal, he has always wanted a big tax hike on the middle class and big cuts to military spending, now he’ll get both!!!

You seem terribly confused. It’s the Republicans who haven’t been able to get their act together. Boehner tried to introduce a taxing approach and his own party fell into bickering and disagreement – so much so that Boehner had to give up his efforts. You sound pretty silly trying to blame that on President Obama.

Posted by: Dan | December 21, 2012, 12:40 pm 12:40 pm

The middle class will become extinct by the time Obama leaves office in 2016. If he leaves at all!!
The Obama tax hikes will kill millions of middle class jobs and Obamacare with all its new taxes will finish the job of wiping out the American middle class for good!
You were warned, but voted him anyway, even after his policies failed during Obama’s first term!

Posted by: davem | December 21, 2012, 12:57 pm 12:57 pm

Its real SIMPLE Dan, Boehner was not able to reach a balanced compromise deal with Obama because Obama never really wanted any such deal! Obama will get all that he wanted after we go over the fiscal cliff, so why would he really want to make a deal with Boehner anyway???? As a added bonus, Obama can easily blame the GOP for all the tax hikes! So ready your wallet, your about to get hammered by the Obama tax hikes!!! Middle class voters will soon realize they voted for the wrong guy, again!

No, you seem to have missed the news. Boehner tried to put forward his own plan to his Republican House but the Republicans are so divided Boehner couldn’t even get support for his own plan from his own party.

The Republicans are even obstructionist with each other, and we’ve been left to play the price.

Conservatives are idealists , largely . Most of them believe in an afterlife that is much preferable to reality . Thus they are not realists in any sense of the word ; and as a consequence they’re not pragmatic nor realistic and their unrealistic uncompromising Taliban mirroring narrow minded often rabidly zealous evangelical moralities dovetail right into the ideologies of their elected hard liner uncompromising political representatives , as expected . America needs less Puritanical religious idealist leaders ( who are always praying to some unseen deity for assistance ) and more sensible realists who get busy and legislate for the American people and don’t waste valuable time waiting on the flying spaghetti monster to make everything better .

Posted by: davem | December 21, 2012, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

No Dan, you still don’t get it! Even if the GOP passed Plan B, Harry Reid would not allow it to reach a vote in the Senate, per Obama’s orders! Just like when Harry Reid pocked vetoed these 30 GOP Jobs Bills that the House passed. Plan B never had a chance of getting through the Democrat obstructionist Senate that hasn’t even passed a budget in 4 years !

@Dan .. it’s not the Republicans, it’s the president. The main reason Boehner abandoned plan-B is that Obama said he would veto it anyhow. Why work to push through a package the president says he won’t sign?

it’s not an embarassment that the Republicans actually think for themselves and not just follow their party like lemmings. the holdup isn’t debate with the GOP, it’s the fact that the math doesn’t work. taxes aren’t the answer, we borrow 46% of what we spend. jacking up taxes reduces that to 40%

Posted by: miguel | December 21, 2012, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

Ask yourself this question – “Who keeps track of your household expenses on regular basis?” If your answer is “No one” – then you need to be very panic, because you’ll be hurt a lot financially by this “fiscal cliff” fail-through event. My case? I’m my household’s financial planner/advisor. A couple of years prior to my retirement, my better-half asked me about our “after retirement living situation” – so six years ago, I started document all of our household expenses on monthly basis. So three years ago, I broke the good news to her that First of all, since we lived a frugal life, with our three incomes – my pension, her and my early SS benefits, not only we can live very comfortably, we can even pass along our close to 1 Mill assets to our off-spring. She’s elated. Oh, BTW, I never own any gun let alone bullets. “Fiscal cliff” or no “fiscal cliff” doesn’t bother us a bit.

We need to have each federal agency assemble a budget from the ground up and justify the expenditures. The hope here is that we will see what each agency really need and not what Congress keeps throwing at them. For example, we’ve all seen stories of Congress funding weapon systems or other military equipment that Defense never asked for or even wants. If each department or agency had to justify its budget the same as it would in the private sector, we would probably find a tremendous amount of savings. This nonsense of just increasing the budget by a certain percentage each year regardless of the need is just plain ridiculous.

Posted by: Jeanne021556 | December 21, 2012, 2:33 pm 2:33 pm

Hey GOP if you’re absolutely certain the president’s plan is going to fail, then give it to him. Pass his bill and say whatever happens is on his shoulders. So someone who makes $400,000 has to pay $12,000 more in taxes for four years.

Think about it. You can then go to the americans and say it’s not us…we tried to tell you and you’d get congress and the white house in four years.

Then again what is mostly likely to happen is the President’s plan will work and the GOP will have egg on the faces as their party crumbles to dust.

For anyone who knows ‘anything about contests (elections) and what happens when you win versus lose, you will know ‘where the ball is right now’. In Boehner’s and the GOP’s court – and the ‘cancer’ of the tea party right wing…won’t let him out of the ‘box’ they put in him…and now he cannot operate in that ‘court’. And by the way John: it isn’t “God Only Knows”…it is about the “GOP only knows”…because that is who will deservedly get the blame…if we go over the cliff. Do you notice how the GOP always distracts to “God”…when they get themselves in trouble?

Let them feel first hand what that evil-incarnate Bush really did for their pocketbook. Most of you should be jumping up and down with glee that things are going back to the ‘good old days’! Let them ALL expire! Time for the free ride to end. Bring back the marriage penalty tax! Cut all child credits for the low & middle class (upper middle don’t get it) back to less than half of what it is now! Stop all deductions for education and roll back the mortgage deduction as well. Stop all tax breaks for dependent child care and adoption. Bring that silly 10% bracket back up to 15 and increase the percentage that everyone pays by at least 3%. Drastically increase the capital gains and taxes on dividends—especially for those in the middle and lower tax brackets! Stop sales tax deductions for states without income tax, and get rid of that ridiculous earned income tax credit. I could go on and on and on and on………….yes, let them ALL expire! Time for everyone to pay their “fair share”….just like in the good old days!

Dear Elephants and Donkeys-

You all have blame in the situation our country is in. Every one of you that has beat and continues to beat the drum of your respective parties’ “principals”.

Elephants- You can’t spend Trillions on war and defense while keeping tax cuts for everyone. It’s the most basic of economic principals. YOU CANNOT SPEND MORE THAN YOU MAKE. The tax rates need to go up. Corporate welfare needs to end. Corporations are making higher profits, and the Stock Exchange is higher still that its ever been, considering we are in a “recession”. WAKE UP.

Donkeys- You cant give away the farm. I understand that certain people need help. I’m not blind or adverse to that. I regularly give to charity and don’t use it as a write-off. I do it because it’s the right thing to do, especially this time of year. My issue is that you have trained poor and less fortunate that it’s in their best interest to milk the system, instead of putting in hard work to better their situation. Put a 2 year cap of benefits in a 15 year span on ALL entitlement with the exception of SS for citizens over 65. Also, the entitlement should be taxed. If its their main source of income, that would make it their “job”. No reason that they shouldn’t have to pay taxes for “working” right? Its only whats fair.

All of you bashing each other because you belong to a different political party need to wake the ####; up and think for yourselves. Use some common sense. Don’t over complicate things. Thats how we got to this point in the first place.

Where we go from here is up to you

I love the way you Democrats always sing the same old song. The B,S you spew out of your mouths is beginning to small like a swear. There have been three bills passed in the House of Rep. setting on Harry Reid’s disk dating back to March of 2011. All dealing with the fiscal cliff, but not one has been taken to the floor for an up or down vote. Now you say it’s the Republicans fault for not compromising their principles and their word that they give to the people that elected them. I know in your views a person word means nothing, it is the way your party does things. You say give Obama’s plain an up or down vote in the House, knowing all the time not even Democrats in the house have supported one budget plain that Obama has sent to it. No, the house has done its job, now you own it. You over played your hands and now you will drive this car right over the cliff.
I said on this very site in November, when all you were smiling laughing and kicking the conservatives, that you won nothing but more gridlock. Congratulations Democrats now impress the Nation and get all our respect, see respect is not just given, it’s earned. Someday, maybe, you will come to the point you understand that. YOUR MOVE

WOW— To people like Dan and DaveM and especially you CND FOX and all you other liberals.. Lets make this clear. The PRESIDENT said he was willing to consider a balanced approach.. Yet his first offer was to RAISE taxes on everyone making over 250K (which includes mom and pop businesses, farms, married WORKING professionals, and a miriad of others who are NOT FILTHY RICH). On top of that, he wanted congress to waive its authority to set the debt limit and give the presidnt power to raise the limit whenever he chose, on top of that, there were NO SPENDING cuts to an already bloated and destructive level of federal spending PLUS he wanted an additional 50 billion per year in additional “STIMULUS SPENDING”. This was the presidents idea of “balanced”. In other words “give me what ever i want and you get NOTHING”. the Speaker tried several “plans” the fist was to raise taxes by 800 billion, close loop holes and reduce the level of spendng by only 400 billion over the next 10 years.. OBAMA SAID NO. Then the speaker offered to raise tax rates on everyone who makes over one million and asked for NO spending cuts (the was origianlly the Pelosi plan) and the president said he would veto THAT as well.
The speaker sent it to the house for a vote so he could at least say there was an effort by the house to pass SOMETHING.. but it failed and frankly IT SHOULD FAIL. Its garbage..it does not address the real problem and even if it had passed, the president would have vetoed it anyway because HE WANTS US TO FAIL.. then he can blame the repubs, EVERYONE’s taxes goes UP, the debt continues to spiral out of control, he gets MORE SPENDING so he can buy votes from people whose lives are tethered to government subsistance and he can spend the next 2 years tellling all its the fault of the republicans as he hands out our food stamps.
Liberals are such idiots, you have become SLAVES and don’t even recognize who holds the keys to your shackles.
If Obama gets everything he asks for in tax increases “for the rich” it will pay for 11 DAYS of current government spending.. ELEVEN DAYS.. and it will cost MORE JOBS that are responsible for MORE tax revenue than it will generate. Look around you.. you wanted healthcare.. you got it . And now, over 150 companies have already said that they will cut hours on employees to get below the 30 hour limit. Others will pay for the healthcare benefits that are required, and simply FIRE enough people to cover it. Insurance companies are already downsizing and some are selling off because they can’t meet the new 85/15 requirement and survive. Doctors are moving to pivate practice or retiring because they can’t operate at 10% below medicaid rates. And don’t expect any new medical procedures, drugs or devices, because the new tax rate for their R/D is too prohibitive.

LIBERALS please.. if you have kids or grand kids, at least have the courage to tell them the truth. Tell them that they will have NOTHING because YOU demanded that you be given what you were “entitled” to. And you didn’t give a DAMN about what it cost, how much debt you piled on or who would ultimately have to pay for it.. Admit that you did not care enough about them to consider THEIR future… Admit that you don’t care how much debt you run up for them as long a you “get yours”. Tell them that when we were given a choice between SPENDING MORE and taxing the JOB creators to pay for it or learning to be SMARTER with THEIR money and spend less, you chose to SPEND MORE and blame the problems of the very people you were taking the money FROM. Tell them this as once the greatest country on earth with more opportunty than any other and that you are sory, but you just didn’t feel like saving any of it for them.

Come on 2014!!!! The voters have a few politicians we’d like to oust….starting with Boehner!

Posted by: Sueb | December 21, 2012, 4:24 pm 4:24 pm

Arkie Vet,

The Elephants shoulder this blame too, don’t put it all on the Donkeys.

Your last few presidents did piss poor as well, spending TRILLIONS in wars we had no business fighting, Giving subsidies to oil companies that are STILL making record profits, and instead of making the tax code fair to 100% of the citizenship, they want to save corporations and multi-millionares an untold fortune in tax breaks.

FACT- TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS DOESN’T WORK.

II am not saying that the Donkeys don’t have blame, they have plenty coming their way with teaching citizens that is okay to milk entitlement for generations, but to say that your party is guilt free makes you look extremely narrow minded and unintelligent. Get out from behind that Elephant and use some common sense.

“Now Obama will get all the big tax hikes and big military cuts he’s been dreaming of!
Obama and the Democrats have been targeting the middle class for big tax hikes, it looks like they succeeded!
After all, sequestration was a ‘White House Idea’ thats been in the works for well over a year!”—————-Exactly. Funnt how taxing those evil millionaires was a problem for obama/reid/pelosi and then boener gives it to them and they don’t like it! Everyone always said tha tthe dems want to increase taxes on the most people possible. The evil millionaires were not enough.

spitfire18213 | December 21, 2012, 4:26 pm —- I blame both parties and use my vote to tell thenm what I think. Obama, by his own projections, will add more to the deficit than ALL Presidents before him…COMBINED. Boehner offered to extend tax cuts and talk later, Dems refused and Harry Reid threw it in Boehners face. I am an Ind/Libertarian and watching one side compromise while the other really does nothing is sickening. Let Obama go golfing and Reid go gambling while we go over the cliff. I hope everyone is ready. We need a 3rd party.

June: It is people like you clinging to your government check and waiting for your “Free Stuff” that make the rest of us proud not to be like you!

If trickle down doesn’t work spit, then why is 0dumbo doing it with the Auto workers, and Solyndra?

Guess I scared Dan off. Dan couldn’t answer why BO couldn’t even get a budget passed when the Dems held a filibuster proof Congress.

COMMONSENSEPARTY-

Thanks for thinking for yourself. I agree as well. I voted LIB for president this year. I dont vote by party lines, I vote for the best candidate. The President AND Gov. Romney were much, much too vague on what their platform actually was, although the President was a shade more forthcoming than the Elephant ticket.

Things just need to ACTUALLY change. Not just people talking about it. Doubt it will happen, but time will tell.

Posted by: spitfire18213 | December 21, 2012, 4:50 pm 4:50 pm

HUH?-

Like I said, IT DOESN’T WORK. I don’t care which party puts it in place. You have mistaken me for a donkey supporter. Sorry to disappoint you.

Posted by: spitfire18213 | December 21, 2012, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

It’s not too hard to figure out how to solved this mess. Start remembering you work for the American People, Boehner, and not the rich guys pulling your strings. It’s so obvious that he has been bought an paid for by the 1%. It sickening, really.

“God only knows”? God is not getting your salary bonehead. If you don’t have a clue, quit.

Posted by: Scewged | December 21, 2012, 5:04 pm 5:04 pm

If I told my boss only God knows how this is going to get resolved…. he’d find someone else that would get the job done and send me packing! Sad how some politicians are getting away with not doing their jobs and making lots of money at the People’s expense. It’s not my fault I never have or would vote for Boehner.

Posted by: saying-it | December 21, 2012, 5:07 pm 5:07 pm

MJCampbell | December 21, 2012, 4:59 pm — Your post is comical when you consider that 1% you are talking about was the very 1% Boehner gave in to raising taxes on. You must be a 60%er.

Posted by: Commonsenseparty | December 21, 2012, 5:26 pm 5:26 pm

I guess the idea here is, Boehner quits talking and blames it on Obama. Both sides need to talk, by removing one side, YOU BECOME THE PROBLEM. Even if you don’t believe you can make progress, you show up anyway.

Posted by: arryandan | December 21, 2012, 5:32 pm 5:32 pm

arryandan | December 21, 2012, 5:32 pm — Yeah, Harry Reid does it all the time. The guy is useless. He, along with the idiot Pelosi, have done more to harm Obama than any GOP have done so far. They both epitomize the problem in DC with their lifelong term.

I know how you can avoid the fiscal cliff, J.B.: RETIRE!!!

…as he should be in Congress!

Commonense- So you agree, Boehner is an idiot?

Posted by: arryandan | December 21, 2012, 5:46 pm 5:46 pm

arryandan | December 21, 2012, 5:42 pm —- At least Boehner has tried. What has Reid done? What has Obama done? I am OK with the cliff as I am ready for it. I would prefer they do it in an organized manner and slow enough so the economy isn’t just jolted, but looking from the outside in, I don’t think Reid is doing his job at all. I think when Obama issued the veto threat, he killed all chances to avoid the cliff.

Posted by: Commonsenseparty | December 21, 2012, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

The way to avoid the cliff would have been for the Orange Boner and his minions to extend the tax cuts for the middle class and let the rest expire, instead of trying to pull another fast one to benefit the KOCH BROTHERS! I would personally throw the orange man over the nearest cliff… maybe he would come to his senses by January!

Posted by: Allan J Krueger | December 21, 2012, 6:00 pm 6:00 pm

Hey, Boehner, there are twenty six alphabets in the series. You are only on plan “B.” Try plan “C,” it might just work. Only God knows how a sensible person would walk away from a good negotiation and veered off to some stupid plan. It is unimaginable. Maybe, Bonehead should have stuck to that janitorial job than being speaker.

Posted by: RomneyWillLose | December 21, 2012, 6:02 pm 6:02 pm

“Let them expire—-ALL OF THEM! Time to remind the “common” man what it felt like to pay taxes under their best friend and hero Clinton. Time for everyone to pay their “fair share”….just like in the good old days!”

POSTED BY: RESEARCHANDLEARN | DECEMBER 21, 2012, 3:38 PM 3:38 PM_________________We should also cut spending… especially the military budget, while protecting Social Security and Medicare

Posted by: RomneyWillLose | December 21, 2012, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

The cliff will do two things: It will give Obama the billions more he wants to further expand government and substantial spending cuts which he never had the stones to put out there on his own. He’ll be able to claim HE cut the deficit (while the economy tanks), which was another of his failed first-term promises. Funny how Obama and the other leftist zealots derided the “Bush” tax cuts; NOW they’re what’s going to save the “middle class”. Well, which is it, Barack?

The Bush tax cuts came at a time when the country needed the tax dollars – not debt piled on a credit card. The desire to extend them comes at a time when the economy is recovering and stable, but when reinstating those taxes could have a very negative effect on the country’s economy.

Posted by: George | December 21, 2012, 6:47 pm 6:47 pm

Well Dan if it is so important not to go over the cliff I am sure Obama will cancel his 4 million Hawaiian vacation to make sure a deal gets done so he can save the middle class. Anything less would be a blatant slap in the face to the poor and middle class. I think we could all agree with that.

Posted by: Jake | December 21, 2012, 6:50 pm 6:50 pm

A large lump of coal in your Christmas stocking, Boehner. You are a disgrace and should give up all the perks the taxpayers give you, including a huge salary, free medical care, and a lifetime pension. Along with Congress, you do nothing but whine and complain.

Posted by: Roscoe Chait | December 21, 2012, 6:57 pm 6:57 pm

God helps brave men and women who help themselves in a responsible manner. Fiscal Cliff will pay for the sins of the borrow and spend politicians.

Posted by: Girish | December 21, 2012, 7:04 pm 7:04 pm

Commonsense- You hit it on the head,Boehner is NOT doing anything. He packed his bags and went home because he didn’t get what he wanted. Now he is attempting to say the problem is Obama. BUT, he’s NOT THERE to talk. I wasn’t talking about Harry Reid, Nanacy Pelosi, that’s just fluff to make it look like you have a point. How can Boehner be working on this problem when he is going home? Fire the moron, it’s not up to Boehner to declare “I will not negotiate.”

Posted by: arryandan | December 21, 2012, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm

The voters will know how to fix the problem if Republican/Tea Partisan squabbling and intransigence drives this country off the fiscal cliff.

Posted by: Thinks2010 | December 21, 2012, 7:08 pm 7:08 pm

My Republican Congressman’s office today told me that the hard-core psychos in their own party are the ones holding up a deal. They agreed with me that the Republican party is who will be paying the price for failure going forward.

Posted by: middle america man | December 21, 2012, 7:13 pm 7:13 pm

@Jake–The only thing the president can do at this point advocate for his point of view and encourage the House to come to a deal and pass some sort of fiscal cliff legislation. Until they do that and work with the Senate on producing a final version that will pass the Senate, there is little the President can do whether he is in Washington or Hawaii. Until Congress does its job and sends him a Bill he cannot act beyond advocacy. After that he can sign or veto.

Posted by: Thinks2010 | December 21, 2012, 7:14 pm 7:14 pm

Boehner is a weak leader tying to herd cats.

Posted by: Thinks2010 | December 21, 2012, 7:18 pm 7:18 pm

Have you guys looked at the two bills, the one the senate passed and the plan B? They are very similar in content. The reason the republicans are having trouble passing anything is that republicans know that revenue isn’t the problem, it’s jobs and spending. Fix spending, stop making it incredibly hard to run a business in this country (Obamacare, regulations out the rear end, increased taxes only hurts start-ups and the little guy), republicans know that simply giving the government more of the American dollar isn’t going to fix anything. If they can’t fix it with China money, what makes you think they can fix it with yours?

Boehner must be refering to Obama.

The repubs have much more to lose than we do. There are ways around things to fund what the President wants to fund.
