Arming teachers? Criminalize sales of high capacity magazines and assault weapons? Until we figure out how to help parents of children with mental illness we’ll continue to see tragedies like the one in Newtown, Conn. Sometimes looking for the solution can be as overwhelmingly tragic as the problem. I have been cut with a knife. Struck with a baseball bat. Not by a marauding criminal, but by my own son. There were times I could not sleep at night unless I closed and locked the bedroom door. Afraid to death of the little boy in the next bedroom. Yes, I reached out for help and all I got was group discussions with other parents. We shared stories. The same stories. Health insurance providers who claim mental illness is unproven as a health issue. Law enforcement officers who say your boy is just a bad kid. School principals who call your child a misfit to his face. I walked away embarrassed and in tears. Shunned by friends and family because I refused to give up. Bad things happened. Endless finger pointing. Time passed. Everything forgotten. Nothing changed. So goes the story for most parents with troubled and potentially violent children. Without help, these children become another tragedy waiting to happen. Gun control will not stop them. Gun control? Arming teachers? Criminalize sales of high capacity magazines and assault weapons?

I want acess to landmines for my front yard and an RPG to stop any suspicious cars from coming into my neighborhood. How about a few stinger missles in case these home invaders attack by helicopter. Putting wepaons that are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible into the hands of amatuers is pure insanity. NOZ

They should report the news as acccurately as they can and quit trying to make news. Their coverage of the Newtown shootings was shameful. For four hours they reported inaccurate names, events, jumped to conclusions , etc, all in an attempt to beat their competitors. The media is becoming as untrustworthy as the politicians they cover. We have to remember they work for and their careers depend on the companies that own them, Time Warner etc. These reporters don’t report the news any more, they try to create it. They ask a negative question assuming the guest will try to defend it, knowing after they've already assumed his position is wrong, he has no chance. It's called gotcha journalism and it stinks. This whole dog and pony show they've forced on the residents of Newtown is a shame. Those people want to grieve and come together without a camera constantly in their faces. The media tries to make excuses for themselves by saying they ask the parents first before they interview a child and that these parents are volunteering to show their grief in public, I say BS. LB

That he chose a rapid fire gun is not the issue. The issue is that he chose to kill. The instrument he used is irrelevant. If he had driven a car through the window of the school - possibly killing more people - we wouldn't be calling for greater regulation over cars - we'd be talking about why he did it and how we could prevent similar tragedies by addressing the root cause of the action. Blaming guns or access to them does nothing to solve the real problem. Chances are, if this guy did not have a gun, he would have used another weapon. The issue is easy access.
