Want to see irresponsible? Not paying Social Security is irresponsible! 40 million people are living on that! Stop payment and those 40 million immediately default on their obligations. Credit card companies don’t get paid on time and credit ratings are ruined. Utilities are shut off! Property taxes to local municipalities don’t get paid and sheriff’s sales escalate! Food banks are overwhelmed with the needy. Bank runs begin with remainder of savings being withdrawn in mass! And worst of all, the remainder of the GOP’s base loses faith in the party and abandons it!

2003: Financial Services Committee Chairman Mike Oxley (R‐OH) works to pass a bill to reform Fannie and Freddie. That year, Oxley schedules a Financial Services Committee markup of the legislation, but has to cancel the markup due to White House opposition. The legislation would have established a stronger regulator to ensure the GSEs’ safety and soundness.

In 2005 Oxley tries again and this time gets a reform bill through the House. Democrats unanimously support the bill in the Financial Services Committee. A majority of Democrats support it on the floor, The bill passes the House on a bi-partisan basis , but the Bush administration and Senate Republicans oppose the Oxley bill. Senate Democrats offer the House‐passed Oxley bill in that chamber, but Senate Republicans, who hold the majority, take no action on it or on any bill. As Chairman Oxley tells the Financial Times in September 2008, the White House gave House Republicans “the one‐finger salute.”

Republicans bickering among themselves stop the Oxley reform of Fannie and Freddie.

Clearly, the Republican Party has decided the best course of action is to continue dragging the economy. The extremists have already stated their goal is to destroy government.

Boehner’s chief of staff even told the Republican National Committee that they may end up raising the debt ceiling every month or every three months.

When will Republican voters feel enough punishment to get rid of those who refuse to focus on what’s best for the nation overall, including GROWTH and JOBS?

There was no spending problem when they had control of the Congress and WH. They spent like crazy AND cut taxes at the same time without a care in the world. They cut taxes when they should have left them alone. IF they had NOT cut the taxes in 2001 and 2003 we would be in much better shape. They grew worried only when the bills came due and they no longer had the control of the purse strings.

PS _ Fannie and Freddie did NOT sell mortgages, they BOUGHT them. Goldman et al pre-packaged them and lied on the paperwork when Fannie and Freddie took them over. When the mortgages failed, Fannie and Freddie got skunked on the bad paper and Wall Street made fortunes on their commissions.
