‘Fiscal Cliff’ Deal Also Doles Out Millions for Hollywood, Railroads, Rum Producers

The “fiscal cliff” compromise has been heralded as a saving grace for middle class taxpayers, their families and the unemployed.

But buried in the fine print of the 150-page deal are also some lesser-known New Year’s gifts to some of Washington’s favorite industries.

Under the plan, the federal government would eat nearly $100 billion in forgone tax revenue over the next two years by extending special tax credits for select businesses that had been set to expire.

While the provisions themselves are not new, and are often extended as part of major bills, their inclusion amidst a tumultuous year-end debate over deficits and debt  did raise a few eyebrows.

The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget listed the so-called “tax extenders” as a “bad” part of the fiscal cliff deal because their cost is not offset, “setting a bad precedent for future extensions.”

The mix of tax perks covering the next year, but with budget implications for the next two years includes everything from incentives for employers to hire veterans to incentives for employers to invest in mine safety. But it also includes these:

  • $430 million for Hollywood through “special expensing rules” to encourage TV and film production in the United States.  Producers can expense up to $15 million of costs for their projects.
  • $331 million for railroads by allowing short-line and regional operators to claim a tax credit up to 50 percent of the cost to maintain tracks that they own or lease.
  • $222 million for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands through returned excise taxes collected by the federal government on rum produced in the islands and imported to the mainland.
  • $70 million for NASCAR by extending a “7-year cost recovery period for certain motorsports racing track facilities.”
  • $59 million for algae growers through tax credits to encourage production of “cellulosic biofuel” at up to $1.01 per gallon.
  • $4 million for electric motorcycle makers by expanding an existing green-energy tax credit for buyers of plug-in vehicles to include electric motorbikes.

*Note the price tags above reflect estimated forgone tax revenue if current credits – which have been due to expire – are extended for one year as included in the Senate bill, per Joint Committee on Taxation.

Read the entire Senate bill as passed.

Doesn’t matter. All these are on the table for debt-ceiling negotiations. You want additional revenues, Barack Hussein? Hollywood subsidies, railroad subsidies, rum subsidies, algae subsidies, electric motor subsidies, refundable credit subsidies, unemployment subsidies, food stamp subsidies, welfare subsidies, planned parenthood subsidies, obamacare subsidies, medicaid subsidies: gut them all or no debt-ceiling hike for you, Barack Hussein! PUMA!

Lets see…..who can we buy off today at tax payer expense? Thanks liberals. Truly, you low-lives are the scourge of this country. We shouldn’t be rounding up guns, we should be rounding up LIberals!!! Undoubtedly that would reverse most of the problems we have today.

the only difference between Democrats and Republicans is what they do with your money after they STEAL IT.

Politicians are getting away with this because most of our country is happy falling into 1 of 2 camps: D or R. It’s time for everyone to reevaluate how much we’re expected to do for government since it’s been a LOOOONG time when government was supposed to do anything for us. Checks and balances have been thrown out the window over the past several decades.

how often are our dollars used to *really* help people in need (food/shelter/emergencies) ? is it even one iota as often as tax $$$ is used for weapons, failed programs, and pay increases for Washington ?

I can’t believe with all the expenses we have to pay off, that Congress is giving anyone of these businesses credits (Hollywood, get rid of the unions and that will keep productions in the US and the taxpayers doesn’t have to pay you guys). First, they say they are going to raise the taxes, then they give credits and dollars and act like they are reducing our bills. Just a shell game. I’m sick of their game playing and doing nothing but padding their own pockets with their buds.

As a rum producer myself, these subsidies to Bacardi are infuriating! This amounts to a $2.14 subsidy per bottle of rum Bacardi sells in the US. Please explain to me how this makes any sense? Every other producer of alcohol in the US must pay this excise tax for the privilege of having this business. So, Bacardi makes billions in profit and pays no tax. This also gives them a $2.14 price advantage in the marketplace. Again, someone explain the logic here? Some fat cat congressman is getting kickbacks and fun weekends in Puerto Rico, I imagine.

According to the constitution, legislation does not originate in the Senate. Boehners’ incompetence is floating plan B so the Senate can screw US Citizens without violating the constitution.

But we don’t have enough money to put a couple of cops in every school? Get retired cops who already have a pension and healthcare. OMG you even got one guy who has the audasity to bash Romney in a post!!!! You have to be a Class A moron to somehow blame a guy who LOST THE ELECTION. But that’s libs. party and ideology first, country last. Pathetic and sad.

From what I am reading, no one is happy abou these. Corporate farms, wind farms, subsidies galore. Can we FINALLY agree that it’s time to throw them all out and send them a message from the little guy? They don’t care about you because the reason these subsidies are in there is because they greased the palm of YOUR elected official and got a “rider” slid into some other bill. Probably had to do with something noble but they allowed it to slide in there. VOTE THEM OUT. All of them. Don’t forget this come next election.

It is a waste of time warning people about Greece. They do not want to see it happening because they have a vested interest in receiving goodies from Washington. As long as these receipients of goodies also can vote for the folks who go to Washington to dispense the goodies they will remain compromised.

By Steve: “Can we FINALLY agree that it’s time to throw them all out and send them a message from the little guy?”—->Yeah, I really AGREE with you. BUT, the problem is, I would like to see Pelosi and Reid, AT THE VERY LEAST, booted out of office, but I can’t vote in those precincts. Likewise, there’s probably a large number of libs who’d like to vote Lindsey Graham out of office, but he’s my senator and I think he’s done fair enough (not stellar, w/some disappointments), but nothing to rate him up there with Pelosi and Reid, IMO. That’s the stickler. We can’t vote out each other’s BOZOS and DUDS.

The evolution of America from a grand republic to a tyrannical body of bafoons continues. We’re no longer a gov’t for the people, by the people. It’s a gov’t that tells the people what they’re going to get, how they’re going to get it, and who’s going to get what. They were supposed to work for US. I’m P-O-d at myself for forgetting that this “deal” would contain bloat and paybacks. Vote the bums out, from both parties. They have to get the message some how.

Obama said taxes would only go up for the top 2% of tax payers, that was just another one of Obama’s lies! Fact is, over 77% of Americans will see their taxes increase on their very next pay check and that does not include all those Obamacare taxes that are kicking in very soon! The middle class is gonna be showered with new Obama taxes and trillions of dollars of new Obama debt! Oh its okay, the middle class did vote for Obama again, so they won’t mind paying a few thousand more for all Obama’s new taxes, will they!
