ARRYANDAN asks, "Does anyone else see the potential for disaster here?"

Yes, we've already realized the disaster of not meeting force with force by arming our teachers. You can't be arguing that arming teachers with the tools necessary to protect their students would result in a worse outcome. Using your words, what moron would argue that?

With enough training and experience handling guns, teachers can be just as safe and effective as a police officer or security guard. Of all people, teachers should be able to learn more than one skill. I don't think we should require teachers be armed, but I do think we should encourage it through increases in salary.

As with anything, there is always the potential for mistake. Although, given the problem these mass shootings have become, arming those closest to the likely targets is our best defense in the long-run, despite the rare potential for mistake. It will deter these shootings from happening to begin with and will stop those that do more quickly.

What moron is in favor of deliberately arming another frazzled public employee? Then, put them in front of a class full of impressionable little children? Does anyone else see the potential for disaster here?

Lookjng for his 15 minutes of fame, is he? Ideas like this is exactly why he will never be a U.S. senator. Teachers teach - they do not police. A better idea would be to allow teachers to carry tasers or disable those who would do harm to our children with pepper spray.

Correction Lenny | January 23, 2013, 9:47 pm 9:47 pm
Yes, I know, take away guns and this wouldn’t happen, but don’t forget Prohibition, people always find a way and make things worse (the mob).

To: usingmyvoice | January 23, 2013, 7:55 pm 7:55 pm
We can say 'what if' all day, but what this is about is giving teachers a fighting chance instead of nothing but waiting for police.
Yet I hope they do include police officers in the schools as well, because here in Texas we have both, since not many teachers volunteer to carry. I have yet to see one teacher here in my university do so and you can some what tell when someone is carrying (bulge). And not rent-a-cops, but real cops. Like I mentioned we have them in our schools, or just the three I've been to.
That still isn't enough. All teachers, even the ones that conceal carry, should be issued pepper spray. Because not all teachers will carry and some type of defense weapon is better than nothing. Not Mace, because that crap is week compared to pepper spray. I have felt the effects of both. I tell my friends that hate guns to at least arm themselves with pepper spray.
To sum this up, best defense: Cops, Licensed Concealed Carriers, Pepper Spray. Combine this all to give the next mass shooter a major disadvantage.

Well, while we're at it, why don't we just make Riflery a new PE program for the kids, K and up. Tell me this: while the teacher (IF the teacher isn't shot first) is moving to (a) retrieve the gun (especially if it's not concealed on her body); (b) draw, (c) aim, and (d) fire at the "suspect(s)", tell me, who's watching the kids? Who's making sure there's not a 6, 7 or 8 yo in the line of fire? I can see it now, there she stands, firing away at the intruder, with three 5 year olds hanging onto her leg. Senator Burns, is that really the best you can do???

Someone with common sense!!! How refreshing.

And to the people who say "teachers shouldn't be cops", this won't make them officers. It would allow already-trained school staff, people who carry a pistol for protection in the rest of their everyday life, to be able to protect themselves & their students in a worst-case scenario.

Lock the classroom door, turn off the lights, keep the kids out of sight of the door, and hope the police get there before the monster breaks in. But if they don't, the teacher is the last line of defense. It's just like acting in self-defense in the real world. And the teacher would have the advantage of knowing where the bad guy was, & being prepared to shoot when he comes through the door.
