Gary Allen, an avid runner and Maine resident, is lacing up his sneakers in an attempt to run from Mount Desert Island to the nation's capital.

Allen hopes to run about 40 to 50 miles per day to complete his 700-mile trek to Washington, D.C., on Jan. 21, the day of President Obama's second inauguration.

The run in the dead of winter might seem treacherous, but Allen is no stranger to the long runs, having completed 20 Boston marathons from 1979 - 2011. Now, Allen is putting his medals aside to run for a few good causes. His journey will benefit The Wounded Warriors Project, The American Cancer Society, and the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

On his blog, Allen voices his support for the Newtown shooting victims saying, "With the sad news coming out of Newtown Ct, a town I will very likely run thru or very near on my run to DC, I have added Sandy Hook Elementary as one of the causes I am raising funds for. Please give whatever you can. Thank You."

The website, which allows supporters to sponsor his run, encourages tweeters to use the hashtag #ME2DCRUN to follow his journey to meet Mr. Obama at the White House.
