The most effective civilian military weapon sold today is not the AR-15, it's merely the most popular and the most modified because of its "look". The look was designed to sell the weapon, not be effective, one reason we see constant weapons jams when its been used by mass shooters. Fortunately idiots flock to the thing because its so EASY to use, and basically easy to get long range hits with inside a 400 meter area (far past the distance most shooters ever use, except those few who compete in 600 meter match competitions).

So, inventing legislation targeting that one weapon because its popular shows beyond any logical doubt that the law itself is an irrational emotional reaction to an incident that could only have been prevented by the accidents first victim, the killers mother, who SHOULD have had her weapons secured such that the boy could NOT have gotten at them. In fact in almost ALL cases the weapons involved were obtained illegally because SOMEONE did not properly secure their weapons.

Therefore, instead of legislating the weapons themselves, lets legislate their storage when out of the direct custody of their owners JUST like we currently restrict the Class 3 (NFA) weapons out there, and require them to be locked in a government approved storage container when not in use or transport and require a double lock system combined a key or electronic code with a traditional 4 tumbler combination lock, double 3/16's" high strength walls sandwiching ceramic to withstand up to 4000 degrees for up to 3 hours. That would prevent any casual theft, and make any attempt to open it SO destructive as to render the weapons themselves useless, baring of course master safe crackers who won't waste their time stealing AR-15's.

I frankly find it reprehensible that weapons like that are left in the hands of people who allow children unfettered access to them, particularly when the children as SO disturbed as to be bared from schooling. Some of the first schooling I got from my parents was on firearms safety, starting with "never touch these" to my first shot, with a muzzleloading rifle, to my first weapon, which I was only allowed to take out and use when accompanied by my father until I had finished the NRA Junior Rifle basic class. Now people buy them without knowing a darn thing about them and leave them laying about as if they were toys, to be used by people who themselves never bother with firearms training beyond learning how to load and fire it. Some sort of training certification similar to the Texas CHL training, only on a basic level with .22LR rifles on a fixed 50 foot range, should be taught at the junior high school level, up to semi-automatic centerfire rifles at 100 meters at the High School level along with basic handgun safety and training on a fixed 50 foot range during your Senior Year. That alone would almost totally eliminate many of these incidents and hopefully teach our youth that the only purpose for which a firearm is legitimate is that which doesn't break the first rule of civilization, do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. The only thing a mass shooting does is make you the monster instead of the victim.

The "gun show loophole" is BS people!! Anyone that claims there is any such loophole is lying folks! I have been to MANY gunshows. I have purchased MANY guns. I CANNOT get out of the mandatory background check, even at a gunshow....period. Don't believe me?...its easy to prove, go try for yourself. They're lying to you hoping you won't check and knowing the major media outlets will not call them on it. Once you give it a try (and are denied), you'll be forced into the realization these pieces of human trash are lying about the "loophole"...hopefully you'll then begin to question what else they're likely lying to you about!

Addressing the problem of mental illness does not preclude the need for better gun laws.

American's are fed up with people like Heidi Heitkam ignoring the fact that easy access to firearms helps enable gun violence. We're also sick of the NRA trying to turn the discussion about banning the extremely dangerous semi-automatic weapons favored by mass killers into an attack on the Second Amendment. The Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that the Second Amendment allows restrictions on certain type of "dangerous" weapons.

It's time for Senator Heitkamp to stand up for ordinary citizens who are being slaughtered by gun violence instead of the powerful gun lobby that cares only about protecting the profits of gun manufacturers.

If you need it for self-protection, what exactly is the need for a police force? We do not live any more in ‘wild-wild-west’ … or do we?--SSG

911 response is over 20 minutes, that include highly urbanized areas....when a criminal is breaking into your home...are you going to ask them to wait to assault you (or worse) while the police are on their way?

Way too 'extreme'...is that right Heidi? Well there are many of out here who FIRMLY BELIEVE that killing off ONE AND ONE QUARTER MILLION Americans over a preceding fifty year due to random gun violence .... IS WAY TOO EXTREME. Gun shows and internet sales need to be shut down. EVERY gun sale needs a 'background check and registration of the firearm to the owner. And most important of all..outlaw high capacity mag clips.

Consider this:

Give guns to the ‘good’ citizens
o	Is it going to reduce the crime committed by the criminals?
o	If you need it for self-protection, what exactly is the need for a police force? We do not live any more in ‘wild-wild-west’ … or do we?
o	Why does ‘good’ citizen need multi round (assault) weapon? To protect themselves from 20-30 attackers at any given time?
o	Most of these mass murderers have used guns purchased by someone else, i.e. may be bought legally by a good citizen.
o	As it is people with mental health will not try to buy guns, but they can always steal it from ‘good’ citizen and use.
o	Why the citizens of a ‘developed and civilized’ country like US are so afraid of the criminal elements of its society that they have to have guns for their personal protection? Have you considered the plight of the citizens of less developed, more violent countries? What are they supposed to have comparatively for their protection, ‘personal army’? or you don’t care?

If we claim to be the ‘most’ developed country and ‘leader’ of the world, we have to lead by example. NRA has one liner agenda to promote guns - ‘for your protection’. Who do we need to ‘kill’ to protect ourselves, another fellow American…or everyone around? I am sure all these mass murderers, mentally ill or not, had access to assault weapons and were not committing the crime in ‘self-defense’.

Think…and think hard.

What's 'way in the extreme' is to shrug off the massacre of first graders and do nothing to prevent further slaughter.

A. Lanza had access to the best health care money could buy. Mentally disturbed people have always been with us, and will be in the future.

Only in America can the mentally ill get their hands on arsenals of lethal weapons and hundreds of bullets -- in their own basements, no less. Only in America do we have routine, recurrent gun massacres.

As long as Americans have the constitutional right to have arsenals of mass death in their basements, the gun massacres will continue.

No civilized country tolerates routine gun massacres. All Americans who love our country should want America to end the slaughter and join the ranks of civilized countries.

Repeal the blood soaked Second Amendment Now. Then implement REAL, effective gun reform and End the Gun Massacres.

TM..... Hypocrites, the Journal News who published people's names who own guns, hired ARMED security guards to protect themselves. Pres.Obama who is not keen on guns in schools to protect somebody else’s kids, but perfectly fine with guns in schools protecting his kids — which is exactly how it works since his daughters not only have armed Secret Service agents watching out for their safety … but the school his daughters attend also has armed guards on duty to protect the children. But that makes sense, I guess, because special kids go to that school.
