to samadas: Good post. If we are going to stop Amtrak subsidies, then the least we can do is stop oil industry subsidies reported at $6 to $10 billion per year, as well. Mr. McConnell and his cronies would also have this country continue to spend trillions of dollars for the wars in the Middle East; to me, that’s the biggest budget buster of all. Yes, this country has a spending problem, but tax increases were also a NECESSITY

“Spending too much” …DUH? How about for 50 or 60 years! We didn’t run up all this debt in the last 10 or 20 years!
The raising of tax rates was just a side show to keep the spending going as long as possible.

Think of it as an adjustable rate mortgage and what will happen when the rates go up! Hello reality.

The amount of income the Federal Government receives every month is enough to cover the interest on the National Debt and all maturing government bonds by a factor of ten. Those are the only 2 budget items that, if not paid, would put us technically in default. If Obama insists on spending our nation’s income on other items (Solyndra, Obamacare) and does not cover the 8% of the budget they constitute, then it is solely the mismanagement by the Executive Branch that is responsible for any crisis that ensues.
