Alright boneheads!. I realize that I am probably spitting into the wind and that somewhere around 0% of you tax enthusiasts have ever had an economics class. But, here is the truth about business taxes. There is an axiom in economics that "the person who eats the candy bar pays all the taxes". In other words taxes on businesses are actually sales taxes on consumers. Whenever a business sees its costs rise it must make revenue sufficient to cover those costs or reduce the cost of goods by cheapening the product in some way. Either way the consumer loses. So, if you tax General Motors an extra 10% of their profit then the cost of a general motors car goes up to cover the tax. If that did not happen then one of two things result: 1) The company goes out of business or 2) Capital flees the company because the appropriate return on investment no longer exists. This is just a longer slower form form of death. I realize that this might be too much to wrap your few functioning brain cells around. But just remember this. "There is no such thing as a free lunch." Someone somewhere will pay and it's not always who you think it is.

BARB | FEBRUARY 5, 2013, 1:41 PM...."but first cut out all the Medicare FRAUD and other fraud, doctors billing twice or adding additional dates to bills, etc."........Both parties have a problem getting this done; and, I the only reason I can deduce is someone somewhere is greasing the right palm(s).

With all these jobs that Obama says have been created, they should be paying a proportional amount of taxes. And the economy and manufacturing doing as well as he says, why is is pushing for more taxes? Could HIS understanding of the facts by from an alternate reality?

grc46.....there are only 3 tax rates right now...so its pretty flat. i would also like a true flat tax but anyone who really understands what that means knows no democrat would ever support it because of the large portion of people who currently do not pay federal income tax. spending more than you have is the real problem and we all know it.

welldirected, H does have his socialist supporters in party formerly known as the "Democrat Party". Maxine Waters of the party was the first to come out of the closet first on taking over all the oil companies. National Socialism we see rising today is a progressive movement that denies it's own goals, but promises to deliver personal happiness based on imposed "social justice" whereby the government decides what's best for people their behalf. Fairness, equality, and justice are all tightly regulated and controlled for your own good, relieving you from the imposition of having to make those decisions on your own or even the responsibility to do for yourself, should you even have the notion. The story is consistent throughout history of complete societies that collapsed due to the best intentions that are sought after by the allure of socialism. Argentina had failed over and over again by falling back into it over and over. When socialism fails it, the government returns much it it's control back to capitalism and privatization of industry and infrastructure. Once that recovery is done, the nation reverts back into the failed socialist ways and begins to slide into failure again, which Argentina has again. Too bad we have so many socialist minded leaders that have infiltrated our own government.

There have been some variations on a flat tax that have more than one rate and I don't have a problem with that. I just want to make it simplier and remove deductions for all. I think that we are saying the same thing.

to perplexed: The idea of a flat tax has been floated before. The problem is, it would have to be a graduated tax, not simply flat across the board, or we will end up where we are today, with both Warren Buffett and a janitor paying 10% in taxes. A flat tax could start at 10% for all minimum wage earners and work its way up to 25% for Buffett, Gates and the like. To me, that would work just fine as long as there were absolutely NO deductions for anything.

These tax and revenue schemes built on dividing the country are clever politics that really work. Of course, it results in us turning into Venezuela - where every vote is paid for with government hand outs.

I am waiting for Obama to nationalize the oil companies as they have in Venezuela - another good idea. Obama smells and that is why flies land on him.

Why can't Congress just sit down and both sides use COMMON SENSE? For instance: Welfare. If someone is on lifetime Welfare, WHY? Welfare was meant to help out until you got back on your feet, not to be a lifetime crutch. Healthcare: We need affordable healthcare...but first cut out all the Medicare FRAUD and other fraud, doctors billing twice or adding additional dates to bills, etc.
WHY are we giving so much to other countries? Both sides, whoever is in, have done this for decades. We have to put a stop to it and concentrate on our own country. There are many things they could do, if they would put on their big boy pants and sit down and really try to fix things and not worry about which party will get the credit! And if they can't do that, perhaps their wages and perks should be taken away! That would help the deficit big time.
