Giffords Group Targets McConnell, Ayotte in Gun Vote Ads

Apr 24, 2013 2:54pm

Americans for Responsible Solutions, the group founded by former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly, released its first ads today attacking senators who voted against the bill last week that would have expanded background checks for people buying guns.

The radio ads target Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., and will run in their home states. The Kentucky ads will air in Lexington and Louisville while the New Hampshire ads will run in Concord, Manchester, Keene, and the seacoast.

“It was a common sense plan that protected Second Amendment Rights. But Senator McConnell ignored the will of the people,” a voice says in the ad airing in Kentucky.

“Well, it sure didn’t take long for her to ‘go Washington.’ Says here Ayotte voted against improving background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” a woman says in the New Hampshire ad.

Last week, Kelly told reporters their group would air ads supporting those senators who voted in favor of the Manchin-Toomey plan in addition to attack ads against those who did not vote for the measure.

Asked the day after the background check vote if they hope to oust any senators up for re-election in 2014, Kelly said “It’s a target rich environment after yesterday.”

Targets? Seriously?

Now we see what the Giffords are REALLY about……….they are simply playing politics……..and using guns as an excuse to do so.

Posted by: Rick McDaniel | April 24, 2013, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

gabby gifford is just another two-bit politician trying to take advantage of public sympathy. I have no use for her.

Posted by: Perplexed | April 24, 2013, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

No one cares what the Giffords say or want, they are hypocritical. Do care the gang of eight would not listen to ICE Union President Chris Crane and law enforcement before they put together an illegal immigration bill…do care about the trial of the abortion doctor but ABC refuses report on important stories like these.

Posted by: Freedom | April 24, 2013, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

Are they targeting the Democrats also? A comprehensive run down on Harry Reid would be interesting.

“It’s a target rich environment after yesterday.”

OMG!!! Hateful and violent rhetoric alert!!

Posted by: SealClubber | April 24, 2013, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm

The only alert here should be people who take advantage of their position or sympathy to manipulate others. It is shameful and without excuse. Instead of going out gracefully and with dignity for her service, gifford has just demonstrated that she is just another politician who shamefully exploits herself for political gain.

Posted by: Perplexed | April 24, 2013, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm

Yeah…..money well spent considering how big gun rights are in those states. I thought it was inappropriate to use “target” in ads about politicians. Isn’t that what got Giffords shot after the Palin ad?

We need another amendment to the constitution similar to the 21st except it need to repeal the 2nd amendment.

Obama & Co. keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Posted by: Aren't Comments Silly? | April 24, 2013, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

No, Senator McConnell did not ignore the will of the people. To the contrary, Senator McConnell supported “We The People”!

Posted by: James | April 24, 2013, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

Some one give Gabby a medal and tell her to get over it. Thats what happened to hundreds of vets, and Mark Kelly should have beern jailed for attempting to illegally purchase an AR. hey have nothing to talk about and damn few care anymore. They just plain wore it out !

Posted by: Cdog | April 24, 2013, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

Brilliant! The people overwealming want to keep their guns, so Giffords just raised a lot of votes for these people.

Posted by: Doug | April 24, 2013, 4:49 pm 4:49 pm

Where’s the ad targeting her husband for supporting these evil gun manufacturers by trying to purchase an AR-15 with 2 difference licenses?

Posted by: FatManChew | April 24, 2013, 4:49 pm 4:49 pm

Feel free to target me as well ! I like many Americans wrote and called my senitors and joined the NRA to let them know I did not want these laws and bans. So, Its not just Senitors that are responsible for you efforts to fall flat, its the American People as well. May I suggest that you try to go on with your life and stop being bitter about your situation instead of attacking others rights.

Posted by: isaidme | April 24, 2013, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm

Giffords is a jerk! Guns don’t shoot people! Sick, stupid people shoot people!

Posted by: Nam Marine | April 24, 2013, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm

Does she not realize that Kentucky is a rural state with a strong firearm heritage? Louisville and Lexington are liberal, but the rest of the state is conservative. Sorry about what happened to her, but my rights to own a firearm are no less important to me, than the first amendment is to a musician or film maker.

Posted by: KD | April 24, 2013, 4:54 pm 4:54 pm

Gabby Giffords, just another liberal idiot, did your memory fail you that the person who shot you was MENTALLY ILL,It was not the gun,it was the MENTALLY ILL person behind it,Maybe we should remove all automobiles because drunks drive them and kill innocent people, that would solve the problem according to the way you liberals think,a background check would NOT have changed the outcome, nor will it!!!! More feel good legislation that is just as empty as your thought process!!!!

“founded by former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords…”

Emphasis on “former”…

Posted by: Jon Camp | April 24, 2013, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

Gabby Giffords is suffering from brain damage. It seems to be getting worse, rather than better.

Posted by: Rasputin | April 24, 2013, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

I think that Gabby Giffords and her AR-K15 buying husband should keep their noses out of our business, we the people have spoken to our reps and told them what we want. McConnell and Ayotte keep up the good job of lisening to the people you work for.

Posted by: 2ndamendment | April 24, 2013, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

The responsible solution is to keep the government out of our lives totally. Gabrielle Giffords sucks and should have paid for her sins; f**king hypocrite.

Is this the same Mark Kelly who continues to use his barely functional wife to build his own political career?

Posted by: Wayne | April 24, 2013, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

It’s OK we are targeting the Demon crats as they are anti American.

Posted by: braun | April 24, 2013, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm

If this truley is the will of the american people, then put it on a ballot and have a special election instead of the changes being made by a bunch of politicians and special interest groups, and LET THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DECIDE! The practice of taking a poll of 1,000 people and saying the results are the will of the people, I have never been called for any of these polls, how about you?

Posted by: Jim Clark | April 24, 2013, 5:02 pm 5:02 pm

I’m still trying to find out what good any of the gun legislation has done to keep criminals and mentally disturbed people from getting guns. I have found none.

Posted by: Eddie | April 24, 2013, 5:04 pm 5:04 pm

I’m sorry she went through what she did but she is not as relevant as she and her husband think she is. Her husband was never relevant… but he sure does try.

Maybe it is time to make laws that limit terms for all government offices to 2 terms, get rid of pork barrel legislation (if it is not directly related to bill, through it out), make all congress and senators follow all health/retirement/pay as all other government employees.
Make congress/senate publish all votes how they vote on every bill on a home state website immediately after the vote. Maybe we can get rid of those NOT FOLLOWING the WISHES of their CONSTITUENTS.
Protect the all of the CONSTITUTION, not just the ones you like.

Posted by: Michael | April 24, 2013, 5:09 pm 5:09 pm

“Americans for Responsible Solutions”??? Haven’t we established that liberals don’t try to solve problems with reasonable solutions. They respond with emotions and knee-jerk reactions and don’t consider whether their “solutions” will work or not.
So, even tho 90 % of Americans wanted more gun control, the MAJORITY of reasonable voters didn’t agree with their proposals.

Posted by: Mystery47 | April 24, 2013, 5:09 pm 5:09 pm

Let me get this straight. The criminal who shot her had a history of drug convictions. His school kicked him out because he was mentally ill. But he passed a background check and bought his gun legally? Interesting how we can’t even enforce the laws currently on the books….but lets make some more laws that will be equally worthless. Seems to me it would have been more sensible to ensure a known mental patient would get psychiatric help so they don’t GO CRAZY AND SHOOT A BUNCH OF PEOPLE! Maybe instead of buying a bunch of ads to brainwash gullible voters, that money would be better spent educating and funding all of the mental health resources that have been shut down in recent years. But then again, common sense isn’t common and doesn’t buy votes.

Why don’t the Giffords focus on taking away SUV’s and Border patrol after those fatal accidents right there in their own back yard ? 5 died how many serious seems like they should take something away-from the folks that had nothing to do with it.

Great name: “Americans For Responsible Solutions”! The only problem is that none of the proposed legislation would have solved the stated objectives of making our children safer, keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals or improving mental health care.

Hypocrites! Really, I think that those that voted upheld the Constitution. More people are killed each year driving than those that are killed with weapons. Seriously, get real and get rid of these politicians that only come out when THEY think that sympathy will get them listened to. More background checks are NOT the answer, enforce what is already on the books and stop “dinking” around!!

Here are some RESPONSIBLE SOLUTIONS: 1.) Make Concealed Carry Licenses available in all 50 States and mandate reciprocity. 2.) Remove restrictions on licensed carry to eliminate soft targets.
3.) Improve legislation to make existing Background Checks effective by improved data input. 4.) Ensure that proper training on safe handling of firearms, proficiency in accurate firing and current on laws affecting legal carry, rules of engagement, use of deadly force, stand your ground and castle doctrines. I sympothize with Ms. Giffords for the horrible crime that was perpetrated against her and many others in Tucson that day but the fact remains had the Commuity College that expelled Jared Loughner pending a psychiatric evaluation actually ensured that a psychiatric evaluation was made and that evaluation led to placing him on the do not sell list as is intended the existing laws and background checks would have prevented him from legally buying a firearm … no new legislation required. Would that have prevented him from purchasing a firearm out of the trunk of a car; no, but neither would any of the proposed legislation.

The Giffords Group is targeting senators for voting the way their constituents wanted them to vote. The Giffords Group is targeting senators for voting to uphold the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. That’s not very patriotic.

The way I see this is until something happens to you or your loved ones we don’t get it and maybe Gabby would not be saying a word had it not happened to her as there have been plenty of crimes with guns – didn’t hear her stand up then – did you? Well we are not where she is – just like smoking cigarettes – I have smoked all my life – non-smokers who decided to ban smoking (probably someone who quit and hated everyone else now that smokes) make life hell for everyone else – why? Because it is none of their business if I want to smoke and they want to say drink (which I find terrible and deadly ) it is all up to the one it affects – how in the world did we ever get by before? We were just fine when prayer was in school – we had morals – do you get that? Leave us alone

Posted by: Julie | April 24, 2013, 5:57 pm 5:57 pm

Like it or not, this had little to do with “gun control”. It fail because it was an attack on the Constitution. Any real American would not support any Law that, in anyway softened or eroded away at the Constitution. The Peoples Voices were heard loun and clear, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

Any unconstitutional act of an official will at least be a violation of the oath of that official to execute the duties of his office, and therefore grounds for his removal from office. No official immunity or privileges of rank or position survive the commission of unlawful acts. If it violates the rights of individuals, it is also likely to be a crime, and the militia duty obligates anyone aware of such a violation to investigate it, gather evidence for a prosecution, make an arrest, and if necessary, seek an indictment from a grand jury, and if one is obtained, prosecute the offender in a court of law.

We democrats don’t really care that having guns have saved anyones’ life or from being sexually assaulted. We just don’t care. We have an irrational fear of guns. We live in places where they don’t have them except the bad guys, of course. So it doesn’t matter that we don’t make any sense. Like gun control and backgorund checks would clearly not have stopped Newtown. Any dolt like a dem myslef can realize this intellectually, but facts are not the issue. But it is about ourselves. It has nothing to do with caring about others. They make big sounds and scare us.

When a Senator votes he is voting the wishes of his constituency. It doesn’t seem right that groups such as Gabby Giffords try to change that vote…or Obama tries to strong arm them into changing their vote. Obama is delusional in thinking that 90% of Americans support his gun bill. Put it to the American people for a vote. At the same time put gay marriage on the same ballot.

Elected officials in a democratic republic are supposed to represent their constituents and relay their opinions. I am proud to say that Sen. John Boozeman (R) Arkansas and Sen. Mark Pryor (D) Arkansas did exactly that. The citizens of Arkansas don’t want any more gun laws and both of our senators relayed that message to the Senate. My senators work for the people who put them in office. They don’t work for Soros, Bloomberg or Feinstein. Prior put it well when he said, “I don’t take gun advice from the mayor of New York City. I listen to Arkansans.” …… My senators work for the people. I don’t know about the others.

I am always amazed at the hypocrisy of the gun ban crowd.
ABC News March 22, 2013: “Rep. Gabby Giffords not only was shot by a Glock in Tucson, but she still carries one of her own.”
Illinois state senator Donne Trotter (D) Chicago has long supported gun bans but On December 5, 2012, Trotter was charged with “attempt to board an aircraft with a weapon”,

Posted by: oonogil | April 25, 2013, 12:32 am 12:32 am

“Americans for Responsible Solutions…” is acting irresponsibly in their zeal to outlaw guns. The senate did exactly what they are supposed to do by defending the constitution which includes the citizen’s right to bear arms. Want to stop gun violence, go after the person behind the gun and niot the gun.

Posted by: john locke | April 25, 2013, 1:57 am 1:57 am

All these comments are quite irrational.

No one is trying to take away your 2nd amendment rights.

Background checks are to ensure crazies don’t get their hands on weapons that can kill a lot of people in a short amount of time. Yes, guns don’t kill people, people kill people. They’re just trying to make sure people with a past (criminals), don’t get their hands on something with a lot of potential to kill others.

Same reason why we have drivers take a test before allowing them to be on the road. Or suspend people’s licences when they have too many DUIs. That way, no irresponsible individual will get behind the wheel and mow people down. Simple matter of public safety.

This whole legislation is logical and simple. I don’t understand why anyone would think it’s about taking away our second amendment rights.

Posted by: Wendy | April 25, 2013, 2:59 am 2:59 am

The NRA has scared half the country witless. They might have their right to own a gun, but the rest of us have our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They are not the only fish in the sea, but someone has told them how special they are.

They are not. In fact, when I see these loons, I see someone who wants me and my family dead and wounded. I am sick to death of these jerks who have the audacity to believe they are more special than my children, than me, than my future. They make me want to vomit.

To my fellow Conservatives: PLEASE tone down your rhetoric against Ms. Gifford. You truly are starting to sound like a pack of liberals going after red meat stories about Bush or any other Republican. I agree that countering her message is important. But do it a bit more maturely. To attack Giffords personally, especially concerning her head injury suffered while she was serving our nation is just plain wrong. Again, that is the type of attack that is common from the left. Please do not stoop to their level. Fact: Giffords was not a far left liberal. She was probably one of the more moderate Democrats. Just prior to her being shot, she was interviewed on Fox and was explaining her proposal on the hill to reduce pay and benefits for ineffective Congressional sessions. Please do not make yourselves (and thus, all conservatives) look so picayune and un-intelligent by trying to re-write Gifford’s story simply because you do not like what she is doing against the gun owners. Hate the message, but don’t attack the messenger. Well, not with false accusation and cold-hearted comments about her injuries. Sounds too much like the very people on the left that we have to deal with every day. Foolish, childish, and un-informed. One commenter, about her being “EX” congresswoman. That was a silly statement. Of course she is ex-congresswoman, but don’t make it sound like she was voted out. She was seriously injured by a madmans bullet and stepped down. So the “key word” is NOT “ex”. See what I mean. It made you, the poster, look un-informed, and it reflects on all of us. I do not like what Giffords is trying to do with her organization, but I admire her, the person. I do not care a whit for her husband. IF her organization is targeting ONLY the GOP who voted against background checks, and giving the Dems that voted the same way a pass…well, that hypocrisy will come back to bite them by letting the nation see their transparent BS. Please, though, stop the personal attacks. Continue, strongly, to attack the message. Godspeed!

MadamDeb, please give one example….just one….of anything that the NRA or a NRA member, even, said or did that makes you believe that they want you and your family dead. Or that they in any way threaten your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Now, if your life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness involve breaking into my home in the middle of the night and robbing, raping, or otherwise hurting MY family, you are right. I WILL take your life. And your pursuit of happiness will end in a pile of gore at the foot of my bed. and by the way, I am NOT a member of the NRA. But just for your information, the NRA is a strong proponent of responsible gun ownership, gun safety classes, and education. So I am pretty sure that your claim can be “shot full of holes” so to speak

Full_Mental_Jacket4 | April 25, 2013, 5:21 am — I agree. the comments from a lot of the anti-gun crowd makes me glad that they don’t own guns. A lot of gun owners are just as bad. Equating gun rights supporters to conservatives and gun haters to liberals can be almost as bad. You can’t say “all” anything concerning humans.

Universal background checks will return…and it will get passed. And the same with the banning of high capacity mags and assault weapons. You watch. It WILL happen. And a lot of Republicans – and a few gutless Democrats – will have wished that they had voted for them the 1st time. Groups like Mark Kelley’s and Michael Bloomberg’s are only going to get stronger – both financially and politically.
