Standing alongside tearful families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre, a seething-mad President Obama lashed out against lawmakers who opposed a bill that would have expanded background checks for gun buyers, saying today marked a “shameful day for Washington.”
“There were no coherent arguments as to why we wouldn’t do this. It came down to politics,” the president said in a Rose Garden statement shortly after the Senate defeated the bipartisan Manchin-Toomey amendment.
The president said lawmakers who opposed the measure “caved” to pressure from the gun lobby and its allies who “willfully lied about the bill.”
“A minority in the United States Senate decided it wasn’t worth it,” he said. “They worried that that vocal minority of gun-owners would come after them in future elections. They worried that the gun lobby would spend a lot of money and paint them as anti-Second Amendment. And obviously a lot of Republicans had that fear, but Democrats had that fear, too. And so they caved to the pressure, and they started looking for an excuse, any excuse, to vote no.”
In addition to the Newtown families, the president was joined by former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an attempted assassination in 2011, and Vice President Biden, who has led the administration’s effort to reform the nation’s gun laws in the wake of the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The president vehemently pushed back against Sen. Rand Paul’s claim that the White House used the Newtown families, who have spent weeks lobbying lawmakers, as “props” in the gun control debate.
“Do we really think that thousands of families whose lives have been shattered by gun violence don’t have a right to weigh in on this issue? Do we think their — their emotions, their loss is not relevant to this debate?” Obama asked.
The president vowed “this effort is not over” and urged Americans to voice their opposition to inaction.
“I see this as just round one,” he said. “I believe we’re going to be able to get this one. Sooner or later we are going to get this right. The memories of these children demand it, and so do the American people.”

NO, it came down to what WE THE PEOPLE wanted.
YOU wanted this, Obama. Not us.

Oh, so that’s what happened, Barack Hussein almighty who is the all-knowing psychoanalyst; so that’s what went down.
“Do we really think that thousands of families whose lives have been shattered by gun violence don’t have a right to weigh in on this issue?”
Well, I don’t think that at all. So that is why I don’t know why you won’t put Mark and Cindy Mattioli, Darrel and Sandy Scott on Air Force One, parade them in front of the cameras, or give them the time of day.
“The gun lobby and its allies who ‘willfully lied about the bill’.”
No, Barack Hussein, the only willful lie about this bill is that there is a gun-show loophole at all. Has any of the people you’re talking to ever been to a gun-show before? Or have even seen, or touched, or shot a real gun in real life before? Or is this all abstract to you? Dealers at gun-shows selling guns run background checks all day long, because they’re required to! You think there’s such a problem with gun-sales on the street? Bust them like drug-deals are supposed to be busted; sting them! It’s that easy! It’s illegal for people barred from owning guns to own a gun, or even try to buy one! This isn’t a legislative issue; it is an enforcement issue, and as the top law enforcer of the country, Barack Hussein is falling short. PUMA!

Wrong Ace. The background check extension was voted on separately.
“The Senate voted 54-to-46 on a bipartisan proposal calling for people who want to buy firearms online and at gun shows to first pass background checks, short of the 60 needed to pass the bill. Private sales would still have been exempt.”

I hope they pass background checks for all gun transfers. It is sad that anyone can get a gun at a flea market or gun show or online from someone they don’t even know. There should be no charge for background checks too just to help people accept the law and there is no excuse but the item should not have to be background checked. I wish they would conduct firearm searches for known violent criminals on a regular basis too. I also think that not all felons should have their right to bear arms taken from them that just does not make sense. Just my opinion.

The state of California has required full background checks and a 10 day waiting period to buy guns for the last 10 years. That has made ZERO reduction in gun crimes. Proof that such laws have no impact on crime they only suppress the civil rights of legal gun owners.

What is he going to do when amnesty goes down in a couple of months and is unable to pay back his donors who got him elected. Cant wait to see that melt down. But the biggest loser is the main stream media like ABC who pushed for Obama’s agenda with four months of one sided propaganda trying to get it passed. Want pretty solid results of what it takes to lower gun crimes? How about NYC and Mayor Giuliani….background checks do not prevent gun crimes….PROSECUTION under CURRENT gun laws do. Today is a sad day for all American people…..To NOT have President Obama’s gun control plan (expanding backup cheks)….The plan, in my opinion, would protect all of us…And, not to want gun owners to have to have more background info on record is a disservice to all of us; especially the many innocent people who have been killed and those of us who may end up being hurt and/or killed in the future and have the crimes go unsolved….Law enforcement officials work hard to “catch the bad guys” and it is an injustice to have them not be able to solve a lot of the shootings because of the lack of background information on the guns that are saturating our streets…..If you have nothing to hide; there is no need to strike this plan down; unless you do have something to hide… We need to exercise our rights by voting these politicians out of office who really are not doing all that they possibly can to help President Obama and us remain safe and secure in our country…God Bless!!

President Obama says the gun lobby and its allies “willfully lied about the bill.” Perhaps we should believe Obama on this point, considering he is an expert on the subject of lying about gun control. This is the same man that said 90% of the law enforcement people in the country were behind his agenda, even though a recent survey (two weeks ago) of over 15,000 sworn officers found just the opposite. This is the same man who tells us he respects the Second Amendment and isn’t after anybody’s guns. but has spent years telling his supporters “I don’t believe people should be allowed to own guns!” This is the same man who has told us he supports Senator Feinstein’s ideas; Senator Feinstein has said the only reason she hasn’t written legislation to confiscate ALL privately owned guns is because she knows it wouldn’t pass! Oh, and even the Department of Justice has admitted that Obama’s “background checks” wouldn’t work without 100% federal registration of ALL guns!
Oh yes, there is somebody lying about the issues surrounding guns and gun control, but it isn’t the “gun lobby”; it is the President and his supporters! Not one proposal in the gun control bill just voted down in the Senate would have prevented the shooting in Newtown. Let me repeat that: NONE of the proposals in that bill would have prevented what happened in Newtown, and NONE of them would prevent a similar shooting! What use is it to make “feel good” laws that don’t do anything to fix the problem?
Obama’s friend and mentor Rahm Emmanuel said “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.” That is what is really going on here: Obama is using our justifiable angst about the Newtown massacre to push his own anti-gun agenda, and is ignoring other truly important issues such as the deficit, immigration, and energy . We desperately need a leader right now: what we have instead is a man more focused on his own agenda than the needs of the country.

People don’t seem to realize that we have and have had for a long time, regulations on gun sales, including background checks. It isn’t lack of a law that caused Sandy Hook. That person did not acquire his weapons by legal means. Most criminals don’t. The problem isn’t going to be solved by yet another piece of legislation that only inconveniences law-abiding citizens and not criminals. The criminals will still be able to acquire weapons. What is needed is tougher penalties for crimes of violence and for those penalties to be enforced. We are very soft on crime. Murder trials are a joke (look at this Jodi Arias melodrama that is STILL in progress). Another thing that is badly needed is an attitude adjustment for our society in general. Read the comment sections of any news item on this site for an idea of how callous and obnoxious the average person has become. The real problem is that there are more and more people out there who want to kill people and aren’t afraid to do it. That is the problem we need to address.

“The “Final Solution” was a euphemism for mass murder as is “gun control” a sugar-coating for confiscation. Thank God for Hoeven and Heutkamp, from flyover country, who voted against Obama’s onanistic bill.

I’ll tell you what is shameful. For a President and members of Congress who have sworn to defend and uphold the Constitution to show such contempt for that document that is a real shame. We can not trust our own government to do what is right. They exploit children and victims of crime to push their own political agendas. That is the real shame.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How do you eliminate FREEDOM? One small bite at a time.
Obama’s initial election then subsequent re-election is what is SHAMEFUL. This president (and I deliberately did not capitalize ‘president’ due to lack of respect for this fraud) is doing his level best to eliminate constitutionally granted freedoms in this country.
His very presence in the nation’s highest office is SHAMEFUL.
Don’t mess with 200-plus years of freedom. Give law enforcement the ‘teeth’ necessary to enforce EXISTING laws, and prosecute to the fullest, any violator of those EXISTING laws. Making new laws and not enforcing any of them (except those on your pet list) will not improve this country.

Amazing how Dems talk about 41 Republicans voted against the bill but not one word about the Dems that voted against it. It is always someone else’s fault with Dems. This bill did nothing to stop criminals, all it did was start to erode our rights. Senators are from different states and are suppose to represent them, not Obama or left wings from CA, NY, etc.

What we need to concentrate on now is back pack and pressure cooker control. We have got to register these and establish a national registry of who owns them. WE have to license ownership and limit that ownership.

If any meaningful change is going to happen it will have to be done through the legal system and by state legislators.
We’ve lost a 3rd of our government (the legislative branch). It’s been bought and paid for by the big corporations. The only thing that motivates these idiots is money for their next campaign.

Either he’s lying about the support or he’s a really bad partisan leader or both.

12000 by drunk drivers

“A shamefu day”? Let’s talk about a shameful day:
I haven’t heard such a ridiculous and meandering string of tripe come out of a president’s mouth in my life, as I did yesterday when I listened to Obama’s little hissey-fit on the senate vote. the nerve that this guy has in blatantly trying to get his agenda passed with emotional garbage is astounding. And, the string of lies that spewed forth from a POTUS’ mouth was absolutely disgraceful.
And, to add to the shame of the whole affair was the iconic clown frown on Joe Biden’s face. Why not just paint some tears rolling down your cheaks next time things don’t go your way, Mr. VP?

The republicans should have at least passed something that makes it a crime to shoot yourself in the foot; because they just did.
Congress (especially the republicans) is as popular as a root canal. They just lost millions of votes from the 90% of Americans who favored stricter background checks.
The interior department might as well permanently color the big states blue on the map. As more red states come into the 21st century they too will become democratic.
The republicans won’t learn that when the show their allegiance to big corporations (in this case the gun manufacturers) that the American middle class tunes them out.

This POTUS would be cracking me up if it wasn’t turning my stomach. President Obama yesterday vowed “this effort is not over” and urged Americans to voice their opposition to inaction. “I see this as just round one,” he said. “I believe we’re going to be able to get this one. Sooner or later we are going to get this right. The memories of these children demand it, and so do the American people.” REALLY Mr. President? Really??? What about then 4 Americans you had a front row seat to watch being killed in Benghazi? And the over 5K people, mostly civilians and innocent children, killed by drone attacks under your direction, and you not only approve of the 3.7K innocent babies that are killed (aborted) daily in the U S alone, but approve so strongly that you made funding it a requirement or your Healthcare Act, i.e., Obamacare. I could go on and on with your lack of integrity and proff that you speak with fork tongue, but we know, American’s see who you really are. So please, spare me your chastisement for protecting my right to bear arms. I say shame on you Mr. Obama and your entire administration for trying to take away that right granted me by my forefathers who fought to free us from the tyrannical King’s oppression and were wise enough to know that I would need that right again some day!

This was undoubtedly a victory for the gun manufacturers and their mouth piece the NRA. The republicans gave the devil his due.
It was a total defeat for the Republican Party. All it did was enhance the belief that the Republican Party is the party of the rich and big corporations. They might retain their campaign contributions from the gun manufacturers but it cost them millions of votes from the public.
Politically it gave their opponents in 2014 a strong issue to use against them.

One of Obama’s key advisors is Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of General Electric. GE paid no federal income taxes on $5 billion of profit in 2010. From 2004-2009, GE earned $26 billion in profits, yet received a $4.1 billion tax refund.
Obama is also surrounded by and takes advice from former Goldman Sachs executives. They have all become much wealthier since 2009 thanks to their association with Obama.

They already do background checks before you can buy a gun. Buying a gun is not like buying a gallon of milk at the store. With a gun once you make the purchase and before you can take possession of it there is a 7 day waiting period. At this time they conduct a background check. And if something come up from preventing you from buying a gun the sale is terminated and you get your money back. So what was this background check going to do? Same as the one already in place. Adding redundant laws is not going to fix anything. Enforcing the current laws will. You people really need to educate yourselves on he purchase of any gun. And you will see it is not as easy as Obama is trying to make it out to be. Now criminals are not going to buy guns legally. And that is a problem. But not one that can be solved by adding redundant laws.

The republicans have the mentality of used car salesmen. “This car was never taken out of the garage by a little old lady”
Here’s what conservative Justice Scalia said about the supposed right to bear any type of weapon.
Another “important limitation,” explained Scalia, was contained in the justices’ 1939 decision in Miller v. U.S. “Miller said, as we have explained, that the sorts of weapons protected were those ‘in common use at the time.’ We think that limitation is fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of ‘dangerous and unusual weapons,’ ” he wrote. Based on Miller, the “Second Amendment does not protect weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes, such as short-barreled shotguns, he added “.

What background chects
Anyone, including criminals and the mentally ill, can go to a gun show or use the internet to buy any type of rifle or gun they want. No background checks and no waiting period.

Licensed gun dealers are the only ones who do not have to wait the 7 days. They already obtain a license to purchase. And background check are being done. If you do not believe me try and buy a gun and then you will see it is not that easy. And that they do indeed conduct background checks.
Now as far as criminals go if they followed the law they would not be considered criminals now would they. And private party sales are just that private. Now if a person willingly sells a gun to a criminal then they should be arrested along with the criminal that bought the gun. But out of the hundreds of gun laws already on the book less them 1% are enforced. And that is where the real problem is. What is adding more laws going to do if they do not enforce the laws already present?
Answer that one if you can..

Explain to me why we are even talking about background checks if they are already in place for gun shows and on the internet. Why did Manchin and Toomey waste all this time even writing a law that was already in force.
I’m a hunter and have gone to gun shows looking for cheap shotgun shells and ammo. If I remember correctly I could have bought any weapon I wanted, with no checks or license.
CBS or maybe it was ABC gave an 18 year old kid $3000 to go into a gun show and buy weapons. He walked out with 21 various weapons and was never checked.

The NRA is mostly funded by the gun manufacturers. The NRA gets a share of every gun sell due to the “round up” rule. They are not supported by the vast majority of hunters who favor tighter background checks.
One of the positive things that has come out of this gun debate has been that the NRA was brought out of the shadows so that Americans can see what a phony organization they are and that they are just a lobbying organization for the gun manufacturers.
Now they are morphing into the NGRA (National Gun Rights organization) who are running all those misleading ads on TV, again trying to con the American people.

Voters should take notice of all the members of Congress that have violated our trust and their mandate to uphold the U.S. Constitution by voting for this BILL and refrain from voting for them when they seek re-election. This BILL was nothing more than a attempt at infringing on our second amendment civil rights by this President and his anti-second amendment liberal Democrats. Definitly there are democratic lobbying groups. The difference is look at the positions of all those lobbying groups. Most of them support middle class agendas. Example , the labor unions who support working people, womens rights groups, the Brady people. Not being supported by the rich and corporations they have very litttle money to buy politicians.
In contrast, the republican lobbying groups have one purpose, to keep and enhance the profits of major corporations and have tons of money to spend on their republican, bought and paid for Congressmen..

tmferretti, the state of California has required background checks for ALL gun sales for more than 10 years now. It hasn’t had any impact on gun crimes, because criminals buy their guns on the streets not at gun shops or gun shows, or they just steal them!
By the way there has also been a ban on assault rifles and large magazines for many years in California, but that hasn’t done much to stop the murders on the streets of Oakland, LA or San Francisco. This Senate BILL would not have made the rest of America any safer either.

tmferretti, I couldn’t care less if another nation enjoys disarming it’s citizens. I don’t care if Californians have brainwashed themselves into thinking they’ve lowered violent crimes rates through arresting the liberties of themselves. They can do that if they want to themselves. Let them. I don’t look to California as a model of doing things right. I see them differently, but that’s OK. I don’t have to live with it and I don’t want to. If you choose to be unarmed, good for you. Hope that works out for you. If you choose to arm yourself, fine. There are already lots of laws and government hoops to jump though in your community to do so. Follow the laws. Don’t violate them. For laws to be effective, people have to follow them. If people are willing to use guns in an illegal fashion, they will. More laws don’t solve the problem. For example, the European Commission and United Nationsreported that he UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU. It has a higher homicide rate than most of our western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The UK has the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU. It has the fourth highest burglary rate and the highest absolute number of burglaries in the EU, with double the number of offences than recorded in Germany and France. The analysis is based on the number of crimes per 100,000 residents. In the UK, there are 2,034 offenses per 100,000 people, way ahead of second-placed Austria with a rate of 1,677. The U.S. on the other hand, has a violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 92 and South Africa 1,609. Got that? The UN reports Britain has a crime crate of 2,034 per 100k people and the US is 466 per 100k. Britain’s crime record is worse than the US even though the lie repeated is that disarming that nation supposedly made it better. It didn’t and being more strict as the UK has become will not reduce crime here either. Still if some states want to follow that British model, good luck. You’ll need it… and a maybe a gun… gun control isn’t working well in Chicago nor Detroit either, just as gun free zones don’t make zones free of guns, it just ensures to criminals that law abiding citizens won’t have them and makes sends a strong message pointing that out.

The U.S. on the other hand, has violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents . . . the UN reports Britain has a crime crate of 2,034 per 100k people and the US is 466 per 100k.

You’re comparing a violent crime rate with a crime rate. Are you misstating the information, or really that out of touch?

Congress doesn’t represent the American people. Members of congress represents that very small constituency that gets to vote for them, and the highest bidders. They don’t run for national election.

As always the devil was in the details. This was more than just a BILL to close loopholes in background checks, they were also trying to sneak in the so called “assault weapons” ban amendment and make it a felony for a father/mother, to give his/her son or daughter a firearm. We must always take care not to pass any laws that suppress and infringe on the rights of lawful Americans. This BILL did exactly that!

Target Senators Who Voted Against Gun Legislation
Forty-five of the 46 senators who voted against expanding background checks have agreed with and supported the NRA, lobbyists and citizens who have considered gun rights a defining issue. Unfortunately those of us who think that all rights should have appropriate limitations (you can’t yell fire in a movie theater, and you need a license to drive a car or write or fill a prescription for medication, and federal approval to make and sell medicine), have not made gun control a defining issue. It is for this reason that the 25 million dollars spent by the NRA were able to gather a sufficient number of senators to defeat even the least limiting bill to expand background checks even though it was supported by 90% of the population. So what are we to do now? Just as the NRA targets legislators who favor gun control, it is time we “target” those senators who have defied our wishes with false claims of a “complicated issue” or “tough vote” and even outright lies that the bill would result in a gun registry although the language of the bill precluded that or that passing the bill would raise taxes. How should we target them? Provide dollars to any candidate opposing any senators who voted against the background check bill if the candidate will pledge to vote for expanded background checks, limitations on the number of rounds in a magazine, and a ban on assault weapons. Such a pledge might be as powerful as the Norquist Anti-Tax Pledge and help defeat advocates of blocking any form of gun control.

The vote was lost because the American people don’t trust their government…for good reason. It will be interesting what the next end run is to try to get around the Constitution.Big business funds both sides and anyone who says different is either ignorant (for those who would call that word an attack, it just means…they don’t know) or specious.

Obama is so upset because his divisive plan failed…to have the senate pass the bill, then allow the Republican controlled House to kill it. This would allow blame to be placed on Republicans during the 2014 congressional elections. The plan was never to pass further gun control. It was a move to gain control of the House by getting an edge on the 2014 elections. But the Senate failed him.
