PRESIDENT OBAMA

ABC News' Matt Larotonda: " Obamas' Family Night at Maryland-Oregon State Basketball Game" The Obama family left the White House for nearby College Park, Md., today to watch an evening basketball match-up between the University of Maryland and Oregon State. First lady Michelle Obama's brother, Craig Robinson, is the coach of the Oregon State Beavers. President Obama and the first lady, daughters Sasha and Malia, and grandmother Marian Robinson were joined by Craig's wife Kelly Robinson and their young son in the stands. Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., also came over to say hello, according to press traveling with the president. LINK

The New York Time's Peter Eavis and Ben Protess: " Pressure Builds To Finish Volcker Rule On Wall St. Oversight" The Obama administration, currently stumbling through the health care overhaul, has reached a critical stage in its other signature effort: reining in Wall Street. The push to reshape financial oversight hinges on negotiations in the coming weeks over the so-called Volcker Rule, a regulation that strikes at the heart of Wall Street risk-taking. The rule, which bans banks from trading for their own gain, has become synonymous with the Dodd-Frank overhaul law that Congress adopted after the financial crisis. LINK

The Washington Times' Dave Boyer: " Second-Term Blunders Give Obama His Own 'Katrina'" A perfect storm of blunders, broken promises and rebellion in his own party over Obamacare is raising doubts about whether President Obama can recover from the month-long debacle to govern effectively in his second term. The inept rollout of the entitlement program and increasing skepticism that it will ever work as promised have prompted Democratic strategist Garry South to label the affair "Obama's Katrina," a reference to the bungled hurricane relief effort that permanently undermined the credibility of President George W. Bush in his second term. LINK

The Hill's Cameron Joseph: " Obamas At U.Md. For Oregon State Win" President Obama and his family traveled to the University of Maryland to see his brother-in-law's basketball team Sunday night. Michelle Obama's brother, Craig Robinson, is the head coach for the visiting Oregon State Beavers. Oregon State defeated Maryland, 90-83. The Obamas have made a point to see Robinson's PAC-12 team whenever they make it to the region, watching a game against Towson last year. Robinson's team also spent Thanksgiving with his in-laws at the White House last year. LINK

CHENEY SISTERS AND GAY MARRIAGE The Washington Post's Sean Sullivan: " Cheney Sisters Trade Barbs Over Same-Sex Marriage" The public war of words over same-sex marriage between former vice president Dick Cheney's daughters escalated Sunday when Mary Cheney and her wife sharply criticized Liz Cheney for expressing clear opposition to gay marriage during a national television interview. The back-and-forth was the latest round of a public split that has intensified in recent months. It comes as Liz Cheney is immersed in a heated campaign for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, where her views on same-sex marriage have come under great scrutiny. It is also yet another instance of the Cheney family's views on marriage becoming enmeshed in politics. LINK

The Hill's Cameron Joseph: " Gay Marriage Splits Cheney Sisters" Wyoming Senate candidate Liz Cheney's (R) opposition to gay marriage is drawing criticism from her lesbian sister. Cheney, running against Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), reiterated on Sunday morning that she doesn't support gay marriage. That drew rebukes from Mary Cheney and her wife, Heather Poe. Poe took to Facebook to rip Liz Cheney for her comments. LINK

CONGRESS The Wall Street Journal's Kristina Peterson and John D. McKinnon: " Health-Law Fracas Leaves Congress In Limbo" Furor over the botched implementation of President Barack Obama's health-care law has allowed Congress to engage in a familiar activity: procrastination. Prospects already were dim for substantial legislation in the dwindling days of 2013, but the headline-grabbing fights over the federal health exchange and canceled insurance policies have given House Republicans no incentive to change the subject. The issue has drowned out talk of an immigration overhaul, taken the focus off high-stakes budget talks and stalled efforts to rewrite the tax code. LINK

Politico's Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan: " House GOP 2014 Agenda Starts With Blank Slate" Last Thursday, a group of House Republicans filed into Majority Leader Eric Cantor's Capitol office suite and received a blank piece of paper labeled "Agenda 2014." The blank slate just about sums up where Republicans find themselves after a year marked by the first government shutdown in 17 years, futile efforts to repeal Obamacare and the inability to pass spending bills at the levels set by Republican leaders.
