The annual National Prayer Breakfast is one of those rare Washington events when politicians shed their party labels and opposing political views and come together for a common cause.
It also makes for some interesting match-ups. This year, President Obama found himself sharing the dais with one of his most ardent critics, Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, who has compared the president to “Santa Claus” and claimed his administration is “full of Muslim Brotherhood members.”
“I, by the way, have always found Louie to be unbelievably gracious every time I’ve seen him,” the president said in his remarks, before quickly adding, “Now, I don’t watch TV.”
“But he is a good man and a great storyteller,” he added.
The president headlined the breakfast and Gohmert was the co-chair, along with Rep. Janice Hahn, D-Calif.
