Bottom Line

On Tuesday President Obama will address Congress and the nation in his State of the Union speech, the first of his second term. The speech comes less than a month after the president’s second inaugural address. Many of you had questions about the State of the Union and the policy that’s expected to flow from the speech.

Angie Antonopoulos wrote in on Facebook: How confident is he in getting Congress to address the threat of sequestration and come up with a viable compromise?

And Ray Blanchard asked: Will the teleprompter be loaded correctly?

It wouldn’t be the first time the president’s teleprompter was loaded incorrectly. I was there in 1993 when President Clinton gave his healthcare address to the Congress and the teleprompter was loaded with the wrong speech. But I can all but guarantee that won’t happen this year.

Immigration reform has been at the top of the agenda in Washington, D.C. this week, both in Congress and in the Obama administration. On Monday a bipartisan group of eight Senators introduced a plan for reform, and on Tuesday President Obama presented his own plan, similar to the Senate’s proposal, in a speech in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Many of you had questions about the details of the plans. Stephen D. Spurlock wanted to know: will the 11 million plus illegal’s have to register, get a social security number, pay taxes in order to comply?

Sandy Abraham Stafford wrote in on Facebook: Is there a time frame if immigrants are interested in becoming a citizen to set up the beginning of the process?

And John Cleeveley tweeted: What border controls will the president support?

On Wednesday President Obama announced a new plan aimed at toughening gun laws in America. The plan consists of a series of legislative proposals and executive actions and it represents the biggest push for gun control in the nation in decades.

Many of you had questions about the specifics of the plan and what it will mean.

Michelle Kuhlman tweeted: “Everyone is talking about gun control for people buying guns, but what are the plans for all the black market guns?”

Kate Potter wrote in on Facebook: “I would like to hear more about the laws he mentioned concerning mental health.”

Patti Maxfield asked: “The Constitution of the United States states that Americans have the right to bear arms. How is it that an Executive Order can violate our Constitution and be okay?”

And Alex M tweeted: “Will Pres give in now on debt ceiling/spending to garner support for gun control proposals?”

President Obama is rolling out several top picks for his new cabinet this week. On Monday he announced that he was nominating former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense and counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan as CIA director, and on Thursday he announced his nomination to head up the Treasury department- current White House chief of staff Jack Lew.  Many of you had questions about the president’s selections, including a question that’s generating a lot of buzz right now- where are the women?

Scott Lara tweeted: “Where is the diversity in the Obama administration? We need more minorities and women?”

Susan Danzig asks: “Any rumors as to who would replace Lew as Chief of Staff? Just curious…”

And Midge Daniels Lee wrote in on Facebook about a topic getting some buzz- Lew’s signature, which will appear on all U.S. dollar bills if he’s confirmed as Secretary of the Treasury.
