Lake Effect
Take a look at this picture, offered over the weekend by NOAA and NASA: Just south of Lake Ontario, they’ve added a label to point out where the lake-effect snow is piling up. You may want to click to enlarge. In a way, what’s notable about the picture is how green it is; it doesn’t include the eastern seaboard, which has hardly had any snow cover yet this winter. But back in western New York state, the town of Redfield reports more than 12 feet of snow in the last two weeks, with other towns nearby not far behind. More HERE. The National Weather Service is sending someone to check on whether Redfield has really set a new record…though their poor scout may have trouble getting there.

Here in Chicago, we’ve certainly received our share of lake effect snow from Lake Michigan over the years. This year, though, the eastern side of the Lake (northwestern Indiana and western Michigan) have been really hit hard by lake effect snow, while we’ve received relatively little of it so far. But I think no one has received as much snow as those poor people in upstate New York–my heart goes out to them!
