The Changing Face of America

"If current trends continue," says the Pew Research Center, "the population of the United States will rise to 438 million in 2050…and 82% of the increase will be due to immigrants arriving from 2005 to 2050 and their U.S.-born descendants…." The full report, "U.S. Population Projections: 2005-2050," released today, is HERE.  Click on the graph to make it slightly clearer. Other points they make: "–The Latino population, already the nation’s largest minority group, will triple in size and will account for most of the nation’s population growth from 2005 through 2050. Hispanics will make up 29% of the U.S. population in 2050, compared with 14% in 2005. "–The non-Hispanic white population will increase more slowly than other racial and ethnic groups; whites will become a minority (47%) by 2050. "–The nation’s elderly population will more than double in size from 2005 through 2050, as the baby-boom generation enters the traditional retirement years. The number of working-age Americans and children will grow more slowly than the elderly population, and will shrink as a share of the total population." The opening phrase is key, of course — "If current trends continue" — but if they do, they suggest a more diverse and older America.

One can’t help but wonder if the Native American demographers made similar projections for population shifts for the plains, where inroads were made by the Sioux, the Ojibway, and others. It would seem that the only rationale for these studies is to find out who will spend how much on what. The only other reason I can think of is about who will assimilate into a culture and who will be assimilated by another culture. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Normans invaded Ireland and were never heard from again.

When I was a student at the National Autonomoous University of Mexico in Mexico City in the summer of 1973, I and a group of friends were interviewed by a very professional, well-spoken middle-aged man as to our opinions on the rate of Mexican immigration into the US. We knew such immigration was happening, but not at what rate, so we answered as honestly as we possibly could. We believed this man was some university official and thought nothing more about this until the next day. You can imagine our astonishment when a group picture of us students appeared on the front page of a very popular tabloid newspaper, loudly proclaiming that Chicanos–people of Mexican descent–would take power in the US within seven years!
Since then, I’ve been somewhat leery of such predictions, treating them as academic exercises. They’re almost never fulfilled because “current trends” DIDN’T continue the way the analysts thought. I have no expectations that this academic exercise will have any different results.

Good thing we’re all Americans!

And we’ll all be speaking Spanish in 50 years too, I’m sure, all because big business bowed to a large immigrant group who didn’t want to learn English, so said big businesses wrote all their instructions, packaging, store signs, etc in Spanish. Sure, many of us have [legal] immigrant ancestors, but those ancestors had to learn English to deal here. Not anymore. Way to go, America, letting our common language (and hence our identity) go by the wayside. I’m so embarassed.

I feel the same way Gerald does, I mean even my package of toilet paper is written in Spanish. If you don’t know what it is regardless of language, I feel sorry for you and if you want to be here, you should be able to hold a half was descent conversation in English. My grandparents did in a local high school at night after working all day, they were not ivy league people, but they did what was expected of them…..the difference is that no one expects these people to do anything.

the biggest indicator of population growth is maternal age. And the biggest indicator of maternal age is education and income. Women who have more education have babies later, have less babies and their babies have babies later. The population that is least educated always grows the fastest. I remember studying this in college socioeconomics class. It’s obvious that whites will be a minority. It has been for some time, unless, hispanics move their class up and then they too will start having less babies and start having them later in life. WHen the Irish first started streaming into the US there were fears of an Irish dominance rather than the more refined English which used ot dominate. Now hte most predominate race in the US is Irish. the English have been gone as the predominate race for about a hundred years. Just the irish blended so well no one noticed.

Posted by: jessboston | February 11, 2008, 3:02 pm 3:02 pm

I wonder if all the whites start flooding Mexico, would the government bow down like the US has to all the hispanics? Think they would change the language to English? It’s sad that there are NO politicians who have the guts to do something about this.

Posted by: L. Jones | February 11, 2008, 3:04 pm 3:04 pm

to the one who posted about the irish population tripling…it did. and then some. The most predominate ancestry for an american is Irish. We are more Irish than English. WE have been for about a hundred years.

This is why immigration needs to be addressed immediately and have stricter border control, etc.

Posted by: meg | February 11, 2008, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

D’s post brings up and illustrates a point, namely, that those statements represent observations made as a spike in immigration occurred. That’s what passes for “current trends” in today’s idiom, and it’s patently obvious that they were made in a panic, because of the sudden influx of a particular nationality at a given point in time. Well, take my word for it, the sky isn’t falling. How will the situation be viewed when the immigration situation is finally straightened out? Most likely, panic will subside and rational thought will again prevail, and the same number of people will immigrate, but it’s all calmed down and the “current trend” will be normal.

To all of you people who are horrified by this projection; you can blame me personally. Go for it. I am not afraid. My husband is Mexican, I am American born to American parents and grandparents. We buck the trends that are most often cited. I am educated and employed. My husband is employed and pays taxes, state and federal. We have 2 beautiful Hispanic children and we plan on many more and we waited until we were in our late 20′s to have them. We do not rely on any type of assistance and we bear the financial burden alone. Everyone needs to wake up and understand that these predictions are grounded in fact. These children of immigrants are here, they ARE American citizens and that can never be taken away. You can send everyone back if you wish, but in 10, 20 years there will be an enormous backlash. Handle the problem now and treat these immigrants with dignity and respect and it will pay off. You can never imagine the poverty these people are trying to escape until you’ve experienced it for yourself. They are just trying to survive and the majority are good, hard working folks.

California, Arizona(though they are fighting back) Texas, Colorado, Florida looks like a third world, banana republic; little by little they are taking over this country. The United States will be unrecognizable in a few decades if we don’t halt this horrible invasion. Barbarians destroyed Rome this way, now it is happening to us. My husband is a policeman in L.A. and we are trying to get out. The Mexicans are responsible for flooding this country with drugs, FBI records show that their gangs bring in 99 percent of all illegal drugs into this country. Why don’t our elected representatives act and do something about this? Why do they just sit there and watch as our country slides into third-world status?

Posted by: Paula | February 11, 2008, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm

hehehe, I just laugh when I hear people say they’re here for good reason. Look at what they did to southern California. lol

It’s not a matter of being anti immigrants. Americans are anti ILLEGAL immigrants. Why is it so hard for LEGAL Hispanics to understand this? You might be paying taxes and you might only have two children, but the majority of babies born in places like CA are Hispanic babies. Walk around and you will see a Hispanic mom with 5 children who are all 1 year apart. So stop making this a racial issue. The facts are the facts. ILLEGALS should be DEPORTED, regardless of whether they are or are not Hispanic.

our governement and big business are the beneficiaries of the entire illegal immigrant situation.
God help this country… between most US towns and urban areas becoming Hispanic outposts, outsourcing US jobs overseas and China bailing out our banking institutions, America we hardly know ye.

THIS COUNTRY IS SAD AND NEEDS TO BE ASHAMED OF ITSELF THIS COUNTRY MAY HAVE BEEN FOUNDED BY IMMIGRANTS BUT LOOK AT THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES IN BEHAVIOR BACK THEN THE IMMIGRANTS HUDDLED TOGETHER TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING WITH THE PURPOSE OF MAKING THIS NATION GREAT THE NEW WAVE OF IMMIGRANTS DONT CARE ANYTHING ABOUT THE LAWS DONT WANT TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE AND BASICALLY LOOK AT AMERICAN BORN CITIZENS WHO HAVE TO FOLLOW THE LAW EVERYDAY AND LAUGH AT US WHILE THEY SEND THEIR MONEY BACK TO MEXICO

Posted by: CHRISTOPHER | February 11, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

Mexicans should be proactive and fix their government instead of just leaping fences.
If they never take the time to fix their government this mass migration of people will never stop. Which means, sooner or later they’re going to mess(even more) up our government too.

I too, believe the Constitution should be changed. No anchor baby should be given automatic citizenship in America. The Constitution is not the bible, therefore it can be altered to fit the times. We are becoming the United States of Mexico and the Mexicans will be running this country in a generation if we don’t do something.

Oh hey white people, I hate to tell you this, but your ‘white’ government does care what you ‘white’ people think or say because they are only thinking how to make more green….that’s all. I feel sorry for those who think this ‘white’ government is actually looking out for you. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!

Andy – Your observations are interesting. Put it this way. There are very few of us (Native Americans) who speak our native languages or practice our old religions or even know the ceremonies and customs. Some come to our traditional dances but don’t know the old songs or their meanings. Their kids know more about McDonald’s than they do kinichee or squirrel soup or even hominy. — Non-Indians celebrate Thanksgiving which was an Indian feast long before the Pilgrims got here. They eat foods that weren’t known in Europe a few centuries ago. They use words which have Indian origin without even knowing it. — Each culture will change from the close association however one will be dominate. The rise in Hispanic population will continue while the white population decreases. You tell me what will happen. ?Tu habla Espanole? We might all need to learn.

Its fascinating to see the prejudice espoused here. Not once did the article mention illegal immigrants, yet everyone is assuming it because they said Hispanics, not once did the article mention crimes, but everyone is worried about it, because they are talking about Hispanics. Get a grip people, we are Americans, they are talking about Americans. The greatest asset this country has is that it can change, if you don’t like it then maybe you should go to Czechoslovakia. America will survive because of its diversity, whether its Spanish, English or Swahili. Get a grip and remember what this country is based on and that hispanics have been here since the country was born. They have fought in all our wars since the revolutionary war and have contributed greatly to our society.

ANOTHER THING THEY NEED TO DO IS GET RID OF THE OLD AND USELESS LAW THAT IF YOURE BORN ON AMERICAN SOIL THAT MAKES YOU AN AMERICAN,THERE SHOULD BE RESTRICTIONS TO THIS CONSIDERING IT DOESNT MAKE SINCE IF THE PARENTS ARE ILLEGAL!!! THERE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE HERE PERIOD!!!

Posted by: CHRISTOPHER | February 11, 2008, 3:47 pm 3:47 pm

You can only assimilate people who are welcome to a place. Give latinos the same opportunities and they will contribute as much or more to the nation than any other group before them. As for those racists who equaled latinos with gangs, violence, welfare and all of that, they should check the statistics. More white people live on welfare than of any other group. Italians (mafia), French (French Connection) and many other groups were also at one time and still now, being accused of violence and resistance to assimilation.

Who cares how many % of the English language comes from French or Spanish or any other language? The point is that Hispanics refuse to learn English!
And who cares if the Spaniards discovered the New World? We have established new boundaries that is recognized internationally and this is the United States of America. So the official language is English. That’s probably why people dislike Hispanics, because instead of trying to adapt to a new environment, they want everyone else to change the rules for them.

Posted by: Juanita Chiquita | February 11, 2008, 4:11 pm 4:11 pm

No, the Spaniards did not discover the new world, Columbus did and he was Italian. The Spanish introduced genocide into the new world.

Posted by: Kyle | February 11, 2008, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm

Who is saying Hispanics don’t want to learn English. Look at the history of all immigrants, it took at least a generation for fluency in English. Again, read the article, they are talking about Hispanics who are American citizens already.

Posted by: Lomax | February 11, 2008, 4:15 pm 4:15 pm

First Kyle, it is assumed he is from Genoa, they are not really sure. It is reputed that his mother was of Spanish birth which is why he was familiar with spain. Also I guess the rest of the Europeans where moronic enough to think that they would fall of the edge of the earth, since it was only the spanish who funded his voyage. Also was it not the French and English who during the French an Indian wars made it a habit of giving indians blanket from those who where infected by small pox. Read your history before you start calling people names, you may find that you are looking at yourself in that mirror.

Did it ever occur to people that ABORTION – the elimination of future U.S. citizens – at a rate of over 1.5 million per year for more than 30 years has created this situation. By killing off more than 45 million Americans – because they were in the womb and couldn’t protect themselves – our society created a void that’s being filled by people from other countries – legal and illegal. As the saying goes, “nature abhors a vacuum.” A large part of the natural population increase of our country has been aborted and so Latinos and others are taking the “empty spaces” created by the abortion of un-born U.S. citizens. It’s common sense and a simple law of nature.

Real simple fixes, for a nation with guts and a sense of self-preservation:
1) Send the illegals back NOW. Yes, round them up, judge them, then send them (and their cute anchor babies) back home. Doesn’t matter if they’re Hispanic or not, just deport anyone without documents. So sad for them, but they shouldn’t have broken the law in coming here.
2) Crush, and I mean really destroy, a few high-profile employers who choose to employ illegals. Set a few good examples and businesses everywhere will fall into line. The recession will help, too. Tie this enforcement with a national database of SSNs, and require all employees to have a valid SSN.
3) Enact new restrictions on using wire transfer services (MoneyGram, Western Union) to send money out of the country. No remittances = no reason to cross the border.
4) Criminalize the harboring of illegal aliens, same as aiding and abetting any other criminal. This should curtail the activities of so-called “sanctuary churches.”
5) Amend the Constitution to end birthright citizenship. From now on, just because you’re born within U.S. borders should not mean you’re an American. Being American is not a geographical accident; it’s cultural.
6) Complete the fence with Mexico. Then do another one with Canada. Sorry to say we can’t trust our neighbors, but if they won’t do more to help us keep illegals from sneaking in, we’ll have to fence them out. Look at the stats – fences work!
Finally, if anyone is concerned about whites being “bred out” by brown folks, well personally I would agree that it’d be a darn shame if there were no more blonde blue-eyed kids around. But whose fault is that? No one’s but those Caucasians who aren’t having enough babies! 2 per family, and preferably 3.
Stop delaying reproduction for your career or self-gratification. Start thinking about the future of this country and what you want it to look like. Have kids, and be happy. Nothing is better than being a parent!

Posted by: J Cline | February 11, 2008, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

To those who support these illegals. I see your point. And I see why they come over.
MY point is if they don’t become proactive and fix their government, this will keep happening.
They should stand up for themselves in their country. Stand up to their government instead of coming to American and rallying at our state capitals.

Posted by: lol | February 11, 2008, 4:34 pm 4:34 pm

I think it’s completely unfair to treat latinios with ‘most favored immigrant’ status. There are people all around the world who’d love to become US citizens as much or more than those coming from south of the border. They should have the same opportunity to do so as the latinios. Why should one ethnic group have such a monopoly? People from Africa, Europe, Asia and so on should have the same chance as they do.
We should favor more highly-educated immigrants as well. If we just have tons of under-educated laborers pouring in, we’re headed for 3rd world status as a nation. The welfare/nanny state federal and state governments will grow due to pandering to poor latinios, the tax burden will probably skyrocket and our economy will tank.

Mike from Michigan: More than 35 million abortions were performed in the U.S. between 1973 and 1990. The U.S. workforce (those 18 and over, who would have been born between 1973 and 1990) has been reduced by 35 million. Not surprisingly, illegal immigration started to accelerate in the late 1980′s – just when those 1.5 million + aborted per year would have been entering the workforce.

I work in a Human Service office in the East (food stamps, Medicaid and Welfare – which by the way is now called TANF). I work with Illegal Aliens and get so tired of handing out benefits. If an illegal is admitted into a hospital, they get emergency Medicaid for the entire hospital stay! Uninsured US citizens do not have this luxury. In fact, an American with no health insurance and who are unable to pay such outrageous medical bills most likely will go bankrupt and have their credit ruined.
Children of illegals are eligible for food stamps; only a portion of the parent’s income will count in the food stamp budget.
TANF – only the children of illegals are allowed a monthly federal cash grant and Medicaid. A US citizen who receive TANF has to work, do job search or job training in order to earn the TANF monthly check – an illegal person does not.
What needs to happen? A child born on the US soil should NOT become a US citizen unless one of the parents is a citizen.
We need to stop putting money into an illegal aliens emergency Medicaid and put that money into either our SS system or help Americans with Medicaid.
Don’t believe me on the above info? Call your local Medicaid / food stamp office.

Once upon a time when labor was cheap and unions did not exist, immigrants understood that they would need assimilate to make it in this country. Underbidding for their services was not possible, English was the de facto standard, and most immigrants came through ports of entry via commerical transportation lines (steamships). To have a better life their children would have to apply themselves in school and become Americans. Now labor costs are so high and the minimum wage such that they can easily underbid others and find work, the neolib apologists provide any and all information they may need in their own language at the taxpayers’ expense, and there is no coordinated attempt to control illegal immigration to this country. (Curiously, all security and immegration measures focus on those entering the country through legal channels, rather like the police surveilling customers comming through the entrance of a store rather than keeping an eye on the back doors and windows.) People who come to this country illegally are not interested in assimilating, because they have little incentive to do so. Until public services (schooling, financial assistance, medical care, etc.) are restricted to the domain of citizen entitlement, and citizenship is withheld from those whose parents are in this country illegally, this will not change.

Who cares what the population makeup is, am I the only one concerned that there are going to be that many people squeezed in here whether from birth or immigration? How long before we pass laws limiting family size? This can’t possibly go on forever!

America is changing demographics and there is little you can do about it. Think of it as the revenge of the American Indians. Mexicans have learned our opportunistic behavior and now they are beating us at our own game! I don’t remember any of our ancestors learning how to speak the language of the American Indian. Boo hoo! Learn to accept change or go somewhere else to live.

There is a great interview on ABC “Exclusiva” hosted by David Puente, where he interviews vincente fox ex-presidente of mexico. David asks el presidente fox about what responsibility Mexican politicians are taking for the poor of Mexico…answer????? David then asks el presidente fox about the INHUMANE and UNCONSCIONABLE way that the Mexican government treats illegal immigrants (coming from central american countries) in Mexico….answer???? So ironic that Mexico ####### on its own people and hispanics from other countries, but the Mexican govt is demanding the US to accept responsibility for its poor ragged masses. Also, we have seen lots of instances of racism & arrogance by Mexicans and other hispanics toward african-americans, “I won’t vote for a n—-r” (stories I heard on NPR) and hispanics wonder why they are not wanted in this country except for labor exploitation. Mexico should take care of Mexicans and stop dumping them in america in exchange for repatriated funds!!!

Mike in Michigan: I agree with you. The things you’re pointing out are are true. But common sense would tell you that eliminating 35 million workers out of the workforce through abortion has exascerbated the problem many times over. BTW – I’m a U.S. citizen living in a wretchedly poor Latin American country. I know about the conditions first hand.

Juanita Chiquita: My point was that language changes, and societies keep on functioning just fine, no matter what the current lexicon sounds like. 40% of the English language came from France – and yet the last time I checked, the United Kingdom did just fine for itself over the last 1000 years. In other words – deal with it. It’s not that big a deal.

I’m with you on the population growth concerns, JMS.
What we should do is limit every woman to having 2 children. Use the tax code to punish couples having more than 2 kids, rather than rewarding them. Make it so you can only have more kids if you’re wealthy and can afford the penalties. Make the poor, irresponsible parents ineligible for any public assistance unless they accept a birth-control implant.
This will create more people in the mid and upper-classes and fewer in the welfare/can’t afford to be having kids class and raise the quality of life for everyone. Also give big tax breaks to those who don’t have kids.
That would be the sensible, not to mention “green” thing to do.

Work with me here. Lets say all those abortions, or a large part didnt take place. Okay, now we have women or parents now taking care of some child they did not want. I say about 1/2 would give it their best shot. Lets say the other 1/2 didnt give a sh*t about the kid, let him run wild , abuse him, grown up in complete #########. Now lets say 1/2 of those went criminal hard core.Okay, we stick them in jail for 20 years, the other 1/2of the first 1/2 barely do anything with their lives. So how many would companies hire ?? Not many–why– they still cost more than illegal aliens do to hire.So we pay for them and the illegals. No win

Mike in Michigan: Lot of “ifs” you’re putting on these unwanted kids. Practically speaking, we don’t know if any of them will be a future Albert Einstein or end up behind bars. Also, it’s kind ironic that couples that want to adopt newborns have to go overseas to adopt them – another unintended result of abortion.

Posted by: petee | February 11, 2008, 7:06 pm 7:06 pm

The issue is with OUR government and big business. We’re practically inviting them to come and then forcing them to live in some shadow society. Which will breed more issues. They need to be in clear sight and paying all of the taxes. Meanwhile I just do not get why Mexico doesn’t have their act together better by now. You can’t tell me they can’t improve things down there.

Mexico is a failed state. 44% below the poverty line, yet has recently produced the richest man in the world, Carlos Slim. Carlos Slim, by the way, ridiculed Bill Gates and Warren Buffet for their philanthropic efforts. Latin America as a whole has the widest income disparity in the world historically due to “Latifundia”, which is basically a class-based system (amongst other things). In sum: “If you are poor you stay poor, if you are rich you stay rich and piss on the poor”. This has of course bred populist movements (Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez), and lately there has been a new strategy by the Mexican Oligarchs to dump large quantities of the “undesireables” into the US with under the auspices of so-called immigration. Illegal Immigration fosters the oligarch tradition in Mexico (and throughout latin america) instead of Mexican politicians reforming corrupt policies and economic systems, they benefit from the ignorant ragged masses of workers shuffling across the border. The saddest part is that the illegal immigrants themselves wave a Mexican flag for a country that has ###### on them. Brilliant!!

Final Comment: There are powerful money interests that want to keep the status quo on both illegal immigration and abortion (which I’ve tried to show are related). Since the money interests basically control the mass media which disseminates dis-information on both subjects it is going to take a powerful counterforce – a popular movement – to coalesce the diverse groups that care for the future of the country to overcome their greedy and wicked plans that they have set for us.

Pew research I find it hard to beleive, I lived in the suburbs of MI and my daughter was the only hispanic in the high school there were 40 percent blacks and 58 percent whites and 2 hispanci boys out of the entire high school. My daughter was discriminated from the school board for 2 years so I pulled my daughter out of that school due to someone lack experience they refused to fire the person because only blacks are allowed to make mistakes and they did fire her other wise they would have a law suit for her mistake she made so many to my handicap wheel chairbound she was an honor roll student and they claimed she cheated on her test, just because some one has to write for her due to not being able to write, this was a public school general ed class. I’m homeschooling now so unfair she gets to mess out on friends and other music programs, but so did I when I was her age nothing changed, see who won all the awards last night were left behind and screwed by the media and everone for years that is noticeable when you turn on ABC. If I knew spanish maybe I would watch another show but I was not fortunate to learn it or fortunate to have had the opportunites to have all my daughter learn to play a piano or volin or guttier, not even my self as I had wish growing up. Obvious only certain minorites get the silver plater and the most help from the media and others.

The berlin wall did allow people to cross, maybe at best 3 a day. When you have 5000 a day crossing your border, you have a problem. A Nation that cant control its borders is not a Nation for long. But a fence may not be needed, if anyones right about the resesion headed this way, we wont have the jobs anymore. This thread only goes to prove that the Legal Citizens of this country are sick and tired of the politians not listening to them. We told them twice already yet everyone of the current ones running for the top job (3) all support amnesty–are they listening to the american people–the ones who called washington and shorted out the phone system, they may need to be reminded again after the election.

This thread only goes to show the misconceptions and prejudices that still permeate our society. Misconception of hispanics hating blacks (when many hispanics are black or of mixed race), the thought that hispanics are a race, when in fact they are made up of diverse cultures and races. The thought that hispanics just arrived in this country, when they can be traced back to the origin of this country. That they have not contributed anything, when many have not only won noble prices in sciences and education, but also shed their blood for the defense of this country, serving proudly and having won Medals of Honor. The fact that the story was about U.S. Hispanic citizens was not even considered, lumping all as illegals, or not having been from this country, when in fact some can trace their ancestry back to the 1800′s and further back in this country. We still have a long way to go unfortunately, on educating the masses of ignorant people, who only want to see the world through their unfounded perceptions, without bothering to see facts that can support them or change them. All they want to do is hate.

Lori, “bambino” is an Italian word.
I think this thread clearly illustrates the sorry state of education in this country. Note that all the vituperation is coming from the “white” end of the spectrum.
The main problem seems to stem from the lack of understanding of the word “illegal.” Immigration is immigration. Illegal immigration is illegal immigration. Until the difference is understood and sorted out, this kind of mean–spirited talk will continue. Forget about the politicians doing anything about the situation. Between pandering to the Hispanic community for votes and the special interest groups for campaign funds, the pols all have their dirty hands full.

The second lori states she from the south, well i could very well imagine her having her fair share of children as well. But you are correct. I myself have no problems with LEGAL immigrants, but do have a problem with illegal ones, like the ones a few dozens blocks from my home waiting to be picked up at the local home depot. Politicains pander because they have no problem with letting it continue. They get the cheap labor they want or the dems get the votes they want. I say we need the throw the lot of them out and start new.

Posted by: Lori | February 12, 2008, 9:27 am 9:27 am

Life in the USA is so charming, that for everyone (black, white, Asian) is a Utopia. NO gang activity, no wellfare issues, no teen pregnancy, no large families, not many crimes happening, there are no school drop outs. All these problems happen only when Hispanics are thrown in the mixture, since all of them are illegal immigrants. That is such an ignorant assumption because there are many failing schools, a large number of pregnant teens, many crack houses, gang violence among the “natives” as well. However, nobody wants to deal with these issues as a corrupting of the local society. It only becomes a big problem when Hispanics are seen walking around a neighborhood. The misconception everyone seems to have is that all brown people are illegal, and let me tell they are not. There are many Hispanics in the US that were here before the southwest was forcelly and by purchase taken away from the Mexican sovereing state. Also, not all Hispanics are Mexican, but that is a continuous assumption by the nativists. All criminals should be treated as such, without regard to ethnic group. There are many problems with the Hispanic community as a whole, but the same is true of the rest of the country. If people hear a Spanish accent in their cadence, they automatically think illegal. That is how narrow minded people are. Prejudice is rampant among all groups, the culture here does not allow for trusting of different people.

Thanks for setting me straight, 1st Lori. My comment, indeed, was aimed at the 2nd Lori. I feel the same way you do about immigrants. My grandparents, on both sides of the family, immigrated to this country early in the 20th century, and both my parents were born in this country. Immigration is not the issue, nor has it ever been. I wonder how some of the proponents of the illegal immigration would feel if they came home from work and found me in their home, eating their chips and drinking their beer. I have a feeling they’d want to deport me out of their home rather quickly, especially if I demanded that they feed me, clothe me and pay for my health care.

Posted by: Andy | February 12, 2008, 10:08 am 10:08 am

Mike in Michigan: A fence in the middle of a desert wouldn’t keep a jackrabbit from crossing. It’s a waste of money. One solution that would absolutely solve the problem hasn’t been brought up. Americans need to stop wanting to buy cheap products and services – they should insist on paying double or triple for everything. That way we could be certain that an American made it. Employers should insist on paying top wages to everyone, after an exhaustive examination of the candidate’s family tree. Maybe DNA testing is in order to prove that not only our parents were born on this side of the line, but our grandparents as well, since someone in this thread has already suggested the elimination of citizenship by birth.
I hope I live long enough to see the day when americans value the lives of non-americans as much as they do their own. The egocentric attitude that currently prevails in our nation leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Posted by: cturple | February 12, 2008, 11:51 am 11:51 am

petee,
I also saw somwhat of a correlation. If those aborted were here today and living normal lives, they’d be paying into Social Security too. If we didn’t have the hole in our society, there wouldn’t be any jobs for the “illegal” immigrants, no matter how meanial these jobs may be, and maybe they would return to their homelands instead of living here in dire poverty. Unless, of course, they were living in dire poverty there, which is most likely the case. Legal immigrants are the ones who are most likely to assimilate to a degree, but just about every American family has its own cultural traditions based on their ancestors’ nationalities. Illegal immigrants are not voting (either are green card holders, who are not illegal) and if they don’t have social security numbers, they aren’t paying taxes. They’re living off the fat of the land so to speak. America has always been a melting pot. People come here to escape poverty, tyranny, wars and oppression. Because at this point it’s so out of control, I do think they should be given amnesty because I don’t see 12 million people being successfully deported. Given the opportunity to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, they may help to strengthen this economy. It’s our borders we have to worry about going forward so this cannot happen in the future.

I will gladly pay more for my veggies if they are picked by a legal immigrant. But i think the stakes are much higher, Companies want- in the end, no borders, a north american union of America, Canada, Mexico. People always say congress would never allow it, what they fail to understand, its done like the European union was, not by law- By TREATY. Treaties do not have to be voted on , pres signs the dotted line.I truely beleive this is where all this is heading. Re: “application for immigration constituting permission.” – almost but close enough – it needs approval.
What many forget, or just don’t realize, is that a large part of our country is actually “occupied mexico”. When we took the southwest from Mexico by force we split family ties with the new border. The native language of the southwest is Spanish. English is the foreign lanuage there.
Secondly, Hispanics are not a racial group, or even a cultural group. They are either native north/central/south americans or a mixture of Spanish (caucasian) and native american. Like all native americans their origin is asian but speak dialects of spanish.
We of European descent are the invaders, just like they were thousands of years ago. We took this land by force and have held it by force.
Education, not religion or language, produces smaller families. Smaller families have more money to spend on luxuries and can better the lives of the few children that they do have.
The trend may or may not continue, but what gives us the moral right to change it?

i disagree. Great Brit. was in the same type situation as us. A heavy flow of illegal immigrants was causing problems. But in the middle of the debate on what to do about it, GB became part of the European Union. Now the issue of immigration is up to the EU Leaders to resolve. GB LOST THE RIGHTS TO ENFORCE THEIR IMMIGRATION LAWS WHEN THEY BECAME PART OF THE EU.

Actually, Quietman, it would make the situation worse. More open territories, greater chance to escape detection and access to a lot more work. Not to mention the problema GB is having now, which would then descend on us. It’s already begun anyway.

That’s what I meant. A North American Union would only make matters worse. They’d have roughly 3 times the area in which to disappear. If we can’t/won’t defend our borders now, expanding the area won’t do any good at all.

Posted by: Andy | February 13, 2008, 12:33 pm 12:33 pm

You may be right. The way that I look at it is that it would eliminate the need to look north and the southern border of Mexico would be a much smaller area overall to police. Everything would depend upon how the treaty was written and how much help Mexico would get to police the southern border. Maybe it would not work at all. But it is apparent that something must be done and soon.

Ironic, isn’t it, that the laws are already in place but they’re not enforced. the laws are mostly adequate, but non-enforcement has allowed the problem to fester so long, that it will take a massive effort to get around it. Just pushing the ‘reset’ button like they did in ’86 ain’t gonna cut it. It’s way too late for that. Gotta bite the bullet and get it done. It’s time to turn inward and solve our own problems before we try to fix a broken planetary society.

The fix , with any of the current runners for the top office, isnt a fix at all. Okay, fine, we except 12 to 20 million new citizens, no way around it. But what i dont like and what will most likely happen as with the last Border Ptrotection-Amnesty bill is the small print. In that small print was a mass increase in immigration and CHAIN migration. U.S accepts 3 million new immigrants a year, most by far of any nation. But that last bill would have increased that to 7 million PLUS immigrants can sponsor up to 35 family members. Plus tons more work visas and the like. The math isnt hard.

He has already said the 12 to 20 million already get to stay. Then went into very little detail about his border protection plain and hasnt said jack about any type of immigration reform.Hill and Obama were all for the immigration reform bill and given that both now have ad’s and websites in english and spanish, they May tighten down the border, but its a sure thing i feel , legal immigration would turn into something like get your pass at the POE and your good.
The one thing i will always remember is that when that imiigration bill was being worked on by Kennedy and Mccain, who was allowed in, NO other republicans but LA RAZA was at the table.Tells me all i need to know on how any bill is going to turn out when they are allowed in and no opposing points of view are at the table. That isnt team work, its called open wide and let us …

Does it mean that they will have to start paying income tax?

Yes it does. But the downside to that is: according to gov studies, high school graduates or below, like most of the illegal immigrants currently, will use more services than what they pay in. Also take into account, the SS system, going broke already, and your going to add, lets say 50 million in 5 years, A large percent of those will retire within 15 years and start drawing on the system, well before putting any Substantial or reaching a break even point , again, shortening the time it will take before a major revamp of that is also needed. And even if your raise those income tax rates, we have the children, all legal citizens, only problem with that is again, the system is currently overwelmed in many parts of the country currently because of the extra room, more teachers, spanish speaking teachers needed,ect.ect. You know as well as i, we would end up short. And lets not talk about the hospitals that have had to close because currently, we have to provide care to illegals, est 90 percent walk on any bill balance.

Maybe that is the reason for his change in stance:
“we know what the situation is today. That people want the borders secured first.” – John McCain, TV talk show.

Also. Not trying to sound uncaring, i know they are fighting a uphill battle. But its about time the U.S starts taking care of its own citizens first, along with 1/2 dozen other emergency issues that this country needs fixing before increasing the population. We cant even take care of the people we have now, so increasing it by a factor of even 2 isnt really smart thing in my mind.

I agree completely, and I feel that the welfare system needs a major upgrade as well. The problem I see is that employers are getting away with hiring illegals at substandard wages causing:
1) Loss of jobs for natives.
2) Loss of Tax revenue needed to support social services.
3) Making it impossible to trace these people for homeland security.
I don’t feel that a “deport them all” approach is the right thing to do. My own view is to handle this on a case by case basis. Let them attempt to qualify the same way any other green card holder must. Make them use the same rules. But that’s just me.

Have been in a INS office a few times, on a case by case basis just would not work im sorry to say. Those people behind the counters look forward to one thing–Going home at end of day. The lines are opening time are unreal.Whats the best way, im sure who’s ever elected will tell us the best way, we might not think so, but they will. And will just have to wait and see. I mean its only 5k a day over the border, no problem waiting another year before another bill is even ready to go.

I am a teacher at an elementary school in Alabama that has a Hispanic majority. After gettting to know the students I have more empathy for the Hispanic children. I teach them English but I have also taught myself Spanish. These students are very loving and sweet. I don’t feel like I am better than anyone else especially Hispanics. I treat them with as much respect and courstesy as I would anyone else.
