‘LonelyGirl15′ Creators Launch New Web Show

When is the Web not like the Web? When it looks like TV.

And it’ll look more like TV this weekend when the next installment in the iconic "Lonely Girl15" series premieres online on Sept. 20.

The latest version is "LG15: The Resistance," and it leans on some of the best practices of network television. You’ll learn how in this episode of "The New Media Minute."

You’ll also get the latest stats on the reach of both audio and video podcasts, including the fact that only 19 percent of Internet users have downloaded a podcast to listen to or watch later.

That needs to change and I challenge viewers on how to do it.

Daisy Whitney is a reporter for TelevisionWeek and the host and creator of the weekly Web show “The New Media Minute” on the business of online video. You can and should follow her on Twitter at www.twitter.com/DaisyWhitney, where she holds weekly contests for Web video creators to have their work reviewed in TVWeek.

It’s hard to take her seriously as a reporter when she’s wearing a t-shirt.

Maybe that’s the point. Would Katie Couric have her job if she wasn’t cute?
It reminds me of Jane Curtin on Sat. Nite Live’s “Weekend Update” being told she wasn’t being sexy enough and ripping her blouse open to reveal her bra (in the days when that wasn’t allowed on TV) and yelling, “Eat your heart out, Connie Chung!”
At the time, sexy Connie Chung was the highest paid woman news personality.

If only 19 percent of the web users have downloaded a podcast, might that not reflect the share of web users who have an i-pod or other itunes-compatible device? It’s similar to the ratio between basic and premium subscribers in cable and satellite TV, so it could also be the basic-premium ratio functioning normally.
