Karek,
Your perception of the prairie dog is from the human point of view. Other creatures of the Earth may look at humans and wonder what (if any) positive changes we have brought forth on this planet. It has been noted that the human race itself is much like a virus, consuming everything that is around it and spreading to new places in order to continue growing. We may be more like the prairie dog than you may realize.

Why would you even waste a second talking to Noam Chomsky about a topic like this? He knows less about neurophysiology and biology than my garbage man does. His claims to have "influenced" fields such as computer science, mathematics, and psychology is just self-aggrandizing hype.

I've to say it.: I heard first on NPR.! It's great though, I've looked for the study to relate to my friends and family after hearing it and haven't found it.
It makes one wonder, if an animal that far down the food chain can convey and understand that much info., how much more can something like an elk?

Please note the bareness of the land surrounding the prairie dog. They come into lush crop land and make it as worthless as what you see. They kill all vegetation. They may be cute but they are very destructive and with limited land to farm, a farmer must exterminate them or go under. Several have gotten the bubonic plague from they cute little critters. I might add they were once sold in this country (New York) for food and considered a delicacy. They are currently sold in Japan as a delicacy. There are crews with airplane engines made into vacuum cleaners that suck them out of their holes and transport them live to Japan.
