Quitting Cable TV: Truth or Lie?

Daisy Whitney’s New Media Minute:

More consumers are relying on broadband-only connections in their homes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re cutting the cord on cable TV. Nielsen’s latest report reveals that there are now 5.1 million homes in the United States with broadband Internet connections and only broadcast TV, up 23 percent from last year.

But the growth may be coming from homes that never had broadband in the first place, rather than homes cutting back. For more details, check out this week’s New Media Minute.

The video above appears to be broken at the moment, but I’ll comment on what I got from the scant print article. I have cable and broadband. Actually, cable IS my broadband. Since the whole TV/Internet/phone package is saving vs. what I would pay seperately, I plan on keeping them for now. If something changes down the road, who knows. I don’t watch much TV on my computer or the tablet. I like the big screen and surround sound system. I suppose I could get a computer with all that, but I’m not looking to replace my main PC right away, probably not before Windows 8 is released. And what if I my wife and I wanted to watch something different at the same time…even broadband will slow down with two users streaming at the same time. And what about the poor saps who only have DSL (how is that even considered broadband? Better than dial-up, but still…).

I don’t have subscription television at all. What I do watch (mostly golf on the weekends, and some favorite mainline series like “Big Bang Theory”, “Bones”, and “Burn Notice”) I get over the air at no cost. Even when I had cable I could never figure out why I should have dozens of channels when it was physically impossible to watch more than a few.

Dropped (analog) cable 3 years ago when I got my first HDTV (HD over the air is highest quality picture)

Switched from cable broadband to cheap ($15/month), but slow DSL, so I buy HD TV programs I can’t get over the air from Amazon and download them to my Tivo.

cable is a rip off. i wish you could just pay a dollar per channel that i like. my bill would be under $20. there are very few channels worth watching. i have a high end cable/internet package to keep my girlfriend happy. i just assume hooking internet only directly to my tv and stream everything. if oil keeps rising the cable will be severed first!
