Oh this is all about the money. No doubt. I have no family so their possessions, some very valuable, some less so but mean the absolute world to me, I hold dearly. If I were the descendant of such a great man, a pioneer who made such a HUGE impact on science that helped countless other scientists, their research, patients who have been affected because of their research, etc. I would not sell it for all the world. It is his legacy. It is their legacy. But all they see is dollar signs.
Clearly Crick's vision did not trickle down to their genes. I hope he haunts them forever. SHAME ON THEM!

Why, I don't get it, who are these dunderheaded heirs?

Its your posterity of genius, what is the matter with you are you poor? I have family heirlooms worth millions to a museum in my family, do we want to sell them? Hell no they are our soul. Although I have to admit, my sister sold the first ever baseball cards, a complete collection to a collector, it was her late husbands gift to her, thankfully she is hanging on to our legacy that dates back to the 1500's, but then again none of us are poor.

Either greed of stupidity is driving this, and its probably a little of both.

"By auctioning his Nobel it will finally be made available for public display and be well looked after." I'm calling BS on this logic. I believe his family simply cares more about money than they do about the medal (their prerogative) since there is no guarantee that, once auctioned, the medal will be either well looked after or on public display. Hopefully it will be, but theoretically, I could buy the medal, roll it around in mud before melting it down for scrap. If they really cared about public display and proper care, they would donate it to a museum, or hang it prominently in the Francis Crick Institute.
