Screen Actors Guild Awards
Lawrence wore a dark-blue Christian Dior full-length gown to the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. As she made her way through the tables to the stage and climbed the stairs to the stage to accept her best female actor award, Lawrence lifted her dress slightly.
The dress seemed to separate at mid-thigh, exposing a sheer blue mesh lining through which her thighs could clearly be seen.
Immediately people questioned whether she'd had a wardrobe malfunction. Some speculated that the dress had been ripped during her walk from her table to the stairs.
Lawrence brushed off the incident while speaking backstage with ABC News' Chris Connelly.
"I fell on the ground," she said. "Somebody's chair got stuck on my train or somebody's foot or something."
"I will never look at pictures of this night," Lawrence added. "That's the only true way to happiness."
So was the dress torn or not?
Not, according to the designer.
In a statement issued Monday to USA Today, the design house said: "The dress is made with different levels of tulle and satin, and that is what the viewers saw when Jennifer lifted her dress slightly. It was not ripped, and there was no malfunction. … It was the design of the gown."
Couture fashion designer Bradley Bayou, who has dressed stars from Halle Berry and Oprah Winfrey to Beyonce, pointed out that walking on the red carpet was much different than walking the catwalk.
"If she is just walking down the runway, she would never have a reason to lift the dress up," he said. "So, in this particular dress, you never would have known that."
