Sen. Ted Cruz struggled to finish his speech at the Values Voter Summit in Washington today as hecklers repeatedly interrupted his remarks.
Protesters interrupted Cruz more than six times, some yelling questions about why Cruz does not support a pathway to citizenship for immigrants in the country illegally.
"Seems like President Obama's paid political operatives are out in force today," Cruz said after one man stood at the front of the room to yell during his remarks.
The fired-up crowed promptly booed the protester and started chants of "U.S.A."
"Is anybody left at the Organizing for America headquarters?" Cruz, 42, joked, referencing the political organizing group birthed from President Obama's 2012 campaign.
Cruz's remarks opened a three-day conference devoted to conservative Christian voters, a powerful subset of the Republican Party's base.
At one point, Cruz could only get a sentence or two in before another protester would interrupt him. Some of the protesters wore T-shirts that said, "Keep Families Together."
"How scared is the president? What a statement of fear," Cruz said, focusing the speech on his efforts to defund Obamacare.
He praised advocates at the conference and the grassroots for pushing the House of Representatives to act by voting to defund Obamacare.
"In my view, the House of Representatives need to keep doing what it's been doing, which is standing strong," Cruz said.
