Job Post Expiring Soon: Annual salary: $115,000 Expense account for office setup: $73,280 Control over staff salaries: $176,484
The perks listed above could be yours if you have lived in Chicago's 7th Ward for at least a year, have good financial standing, no criminal record and are interested in a job in politics. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been urging citizens to apply online for the position of 7th Ward alderman by way of an online application form.
For his first aldermanic appointment, Emanuel has stated that he is seeking someone "with a strong record of community engagement and involvement throughout the ward who is ready to work on day one."
Interested candidates should be ready to describe their involvement in the community and experience with the government. Candidates should also be ready to discuss what they believe to be the most pressing issue in the 7th Ward, which includes the communities of South Chicago, South Shore, Calumet Heights and South Deering.
Emanuel insists this online application to be a "transparent, open process that will allow any eligible resident of the 7th ward to present their qualifications and will ensure the residents of this community get a strong representative on the City Council."
Despite the intentions of transparency, the mayor's office has not released any of the applicants' names, preventing constituents from seeing who their potential leaders may be.
Emanuel is no stranger to political appointments and replacements, having started his political career through a U.S. House seat in the 5th District of Illinois. This seat was previously held by Rod Blagojevich who had moved on to be the Governor of Illinois, and was later impeached from office due to charges of corruption.
Sandi Jackson, wife of former Representative Jesse Jackson, resigned from the position of 7th Ward Alderman after only serving 20 months. Jackson cited her departure as an effect of the ongoing controversy regarding her husband's campaign funds and his struggle with bipolar depression.
The original deadline for applications was Jan. 25, by 5 p.m. but due to the website's technical difficulties the application is still open through Monday, Jan. 28, until 5 p.m.
Emanuel will announce his appointment next week.
