Bynes Strives to Be 100 Pounds

I don't think it's a secret that former teen star Amanda Bynes, 26, is having some issues lately. Starting in the summer of 2012, Bynes -- who starred in the movies "What A Girl Wants" and "Hairspray," and the TV show "What I Like About You" -- had a string of vehicular incidents including a DUI arrest and two hit-and-run charges, leading to a suspended license. In September 2012, the actress locked herself inside a dressing room in LA for two hours and then a  cupcake shop bathroom in NYC for a half hour. She's created and deleted countless Twitter and Tumblr accounts, announced her early retirement from acting, and denied having mental health issues. For some reason,  Us Weekly decided that Bynes was a good choice for their regular "25 Things You Don't Know About Me" feature, but I really think it should have been cut down to 24 things, as one tidbit on Bynes' list strikes me as disturbing. Here is #15 on Bynes' list:

15.  I moved to New York City and I love it! I lost 4 lbs. since I moved. I'm 121 lbs -- my goal is 100 lbs.

Next Up For Amanda Bynes: A Fashion Line, Naturally

I did a little Googling and found that Bynes' height is reportedly between 5'7" and 5'8". Now, I'm no doctor, and I certainly know that there are some women who are  naturally quite thin, but it strikes me as rather disturbing that a woman of Bynes' height is aspiring to lose more than 20 pounds in an attempt to reach 100 lbs. While a person's Body Mass Index (BMI) is an inexact measurement of whether their weight is in the healthy range, it is one commonly used and accepted indicator. At 5'7 and 121 lbs., according to a BMI calculator I used, Bynes' BMI of 18.8 is just barely in the normal weight range. At her goal weight of 100 lbs., her BMI would be 15.7, which is considered severely underweight. That Bynes is striving to be this thin suggests to me that she may suffer from some sort of body dysmorphia, which may have or could still lead to dangerous eating, exercise and restriction habits.

While she could certainly give up on this particular endeavor or might not have even been being serious in the first place, I still find it troublesome that Us Weekly didn't nix this item on Bynes' list before it was published on their website. A woman of Bynes' height casually saying she wants to drop a whopping 20+ pounds from her already thin frame isn't a fun factoid -- it's indicative that Bynes might not be well in more ways than already suspected. Plus, it sends the message to readers that Bynes' aspiration is somehow as healthy and normal as her admittance that her grandparents are from Toronto. I hope Us Weekly edits the piece and removes #15 from the list -- but more importantly, I hope Amanda Bynes is okay. [ Us Weekly]
