Miley Cyrus raised eyebrows with her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday, but not everyone was offended. Several celebrities, from Justin Timberlake to Selena Gomez, have spoken out in support of the "We Can't Stop" singer (and self-proclaimed pro-twerker). Click through to see who was a fan of her big number.
Some might have expected the singer's famous father, Billy Ray Cyrus, to criticize his daughter's performance, but the "Achy Breaky Heart" crooner took the opposite approach. "Of course, I'll always be here for Miley. Can't wait to see her when she gets home," he told "Entertainment Tonight." "She's still my little girl and I'm still her dad regardless how this circus we call show business plays out. I love her unconditionally and that will never change." His wife, Tish Cyrus, (with whom he recently reconciled), seemingly feels the same way, and was shown applauding in the crowd after her daughter was finished.
For many, Justin Timberlake's performance was one of the highlights of the VMAs, and he doesn't understand why viewers aren't saying the same about Cyrus'. "It's the VMAs. You know what I mean, like, it's not the Grammys," he told New York City radio station Hot 97. "We're talking about Madonna in a wedding dress humping the stage, we're talking about Britney doing a striptease. This cycle is not uncommon."
Though the "American Idol" star tweeted that he "didnt' actually state whether I liked @MileyCyrus [sic] performance," he was quick to defend it. "And listen if it wasn't ur cup of tea -- all good but why is everyone spazzing? Hey -- she's doin something right. We all talkin," he wrote. He later added, "I merely said she was having fun and to cut her some slack."
Though Harry Styles joked to Yahoo that Cyrus' performance was "very reserved," a few of his One Direction band mates jumped to her defense. Niall Horan admitted, "I don't get why everyone is sulking about her." And Louis Tomlinson added, "I was shocked at how much coverage it got and I think she was shocked. I don't think she even knew she'd get that much attention from it."
Nobody was more familiar with Cyrus' performance than Robin Thicke, who took the stage with her. "?@robinthicke That was dope," he tweeted after leaving the stage. "Shout out to @MileyCyrus @kendricklamar @2chainz #VMA pic.twitter.com/Lva7RV8tAG"
Selena Gomez was shown staring blankly at the stage during the performance, but afterward, the "Come and Get It" singer praised her contemporary. "Amazing. I thought it was awesome," she told Us Weekly. "I like Robin Thicke, too, so I like that they [collaborated]. I thought that was good."
