Duncan Hunter
A Vietnam veteran with a son serving in Iraq, Rep. Duncan Hunter has built a tough-guy reputation in Congress: strong on national security, taking a hard-line position on the borders and immigration, and an across-the-board social and fiscal conservative. While not a household name, Hunter has committed his political future to his run for the White House; he is not seeking reelection to his House seat. Hunter joined the Army in 1968 during the war in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He went to law school in San Diego on the GI bill in 1973 and got his degree from Western State School of Law, now the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. During one of his first major campaign trips to Iowa, Hunter bought a pickup truck in Detroit to emphasize his support of American products then personally drove the truck around the early caucus state.
