Barack Obama
Barack Obama burst onto the national stage with the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Then, he was a 42-year-old state senator from Illinois with a funny last name. Now, he is a sitting senator who has developed into a serious presidential contender. Born to a white mother and a Kenyan father, Obama lived primarily in Hawaii. After high school, Obama began studying in Los Angeles, before finishing his degree at Columbia University. In 1985, Obama moved to Chicago and began work as a community organizer, then went back to school, studying law at Harvard and serving as the first black president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review. Obama entered politics in 1996, when he successfully ran for the Illinois State Senate. Four years later, Obama was crushed in a race for a U.S. House seat. In 2004, Obama finally won, this time in a landslide for a seat in the Senate. Obama announced his plans to run for president in front of the Old State Capitol in 2007.
