Fred Thompson
As a lawyer, politician, and actor Fred Dalton Thompson has brought his imposing frame and distinct Southern baritone to three distinct and successful careers. Born in Alabama, Thompson graduated from Memphis State University in 1964 and went on to study law at Vanderbilt. In 1972, he signed on to the successful reelection campaign of Sen. Howard Baker, R-Tenn. In 1973, Baker appointed Thompson chief minority council of the Senate Watergate Committee. But in 1977, Thompson took on a case that led him to another career opportunity: acting. He pleaded the case of a whistleblower fired for refusing to take part in a paroles-for-sale plot. The case caught national attention and Thompson played himself in the film based on his client's story. He's acted in more than 20 films and numerous television shows since that time. In 1994, Thompson won the last two years of Al Gore's seat, and then won another full term. After his stint in the Senate, Thompson kept busy with acting, speaking engagements and lobbying. He was the last to enter the Republican race for president in September 2007.
