   Continuing ideas are still in the pipeline. Will there are about thirty vaccine candidates that are in human trials and now we're looking mainly products that are in early phase one trials and that look at safety. And there is one vaccine strategy -- being tested in the largest HIV vaccine trial ever 161000. Individuals in Thailand are currently enrolled in the trial that will finish up in about a year. And it's a combination of two products one made by Sanofi past -- or one made buy -- company called Baxter and and that's the phase three trial and and we certainly want to see that that through we want to know what that result is next year and then you have as -- say about thirty products in phase one. And then I think perhaps most exciting -- you have a number of new ideas that are in preclinical development. It's exciting scientifically but it's still quite a long way from being human clinical trial. As you well know right from the start there was a considerable amount of skepticism about the possibility of an aids vaccine . Simply because. The virus so easily changes and we wondered how you could keep up with the changing virus. In terms of the vaccine much like the flu virus and the need for a yearly vaccine -- how does that work out. Where it is exciting complicated ways this is an ongoing debate in the field there are certainly people particularly after their work result. Who have kind of gone back into -- rather pessimistic view that this may not be possible. But there's no denying that HIV is the most devastating virus in public health terms and the most challenging product -- disease in terms of developing a vaccine product. You know when you think about other vaccines that work historically -- and epidemics. They help the immune system fight off -- pathogens. With HIV -- sexually attacking the very immune system that we're trying to boost so we we have troops tremendous -- -- HIV. But having said that. They're there have been in there are still tremendously good scientific reasons to think that an HIV vaccine is possible. And as you might guess many people would simply say so why not continue the research on -- -- vaccine but then others would say. Given ultimately limited resources of money and personnel that maybe we should focus on other areas that do seem to have some impact immediately namely -- And prevention actually I think you know for for our perspective as an organization focused on advocacy. We very much believe that an aids vaccine is possible in that search must continue. At the same time that has to happen within the context of a truly comprehensive response to the epidemic. With the -- result coming out last year we've seen for the last six months a lot of what I regard as very. Naive and false dichotomy -- prevention or treatment. Vaccine research or treatment scale up. That this is I really naive way to look at the way we respond to this epidemic -- fundamentally believe that we will not prevent her way out of this epidemic. We won't treat our way out about this epidemic so we researcher way out of this epidemic it's when we find the balance between those three areas and they're not so disconnected. In fact one of the things we see in the vaccine trucks is a tremendous opportunity to engage communities around the world and getting -- To consider possibly being in -- trial but to also consider prevention strategies -- we really got to get away from this either or approach to the epidemic. There are certainly. Limited resources that that's a reality for everyone working. In HIV and public health and development but but we don't need to see these historically black and white choices. You just use the phrase around the world how much of aids vaccine research in particular. Is focused in the US and other western countries -- the Russell. -- this is possibly one of the most exciting things about HIV vaccine research in the past decade.
