Excedrin Plant Problems Spur Black Market
second half of the year. Excedrin is not the first over-the-counter While you're waiting for excedrin to come back, experts say it has the same amount of aspirin , acetaminophen and caffeine, as excedrin , it should work just as well
For the last six months, the popular pain reliever, excedrin , has been missing from stores, because of trouble in their production factory. It's created a bit of a black market for the drug. And jim avila joins us with details. Good morning, jim. Reporter: Good morning, george. Excedrin , temporarily taken off the market for quality issues, is now selling for ridiculous prices on the black market. It's one of the hottest and most unlikely commodities on the internet. Excedrin . The popular headache drug, going FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON eBAY. Targeting consumers desperate for relief. Six years ago, I made the switch to excedrin migraine. And it really, really worked. Reporter: Erin has been suffering from migraines for 16 years. And said for her, generic is just not the same. In a particular situation, i didn't feel that the generic affected me as positively as the name brand. Reporter: Erin was forced to switch after the company that manufactures excedrin , voluntarily recalled its excedrin products. It suspended operations in january, after learning some bottles might have been contaminated. In a statement to abc news, novartis says it's working hard to get production back up and running. And expects to begin shipment of limited portfolio products in the second half of the year. Excedrin is not the first over-the-counter drug to go temporarily missing. In 2010, certain children's tylenol, motrin, zyrtec, and other benadryl products were recalled after concerns that they did not meet quality standards. While you're waiting for excedrin to come back, experts say, go for the generic. If it has the same amount of aspirin , acetaminophen and caffeine, as excedrin , it should work just as well. Reporter: Buying any medicine over the internet can be risky. -

But it was more prevalent in the older age population -- I don't know that the studies that much more different from the rest. Is a difference in terms of how the study was done this is called an observational trial -- observe women who have chosen to take aspirin . Compared to the other trials which have been more conflicting which were randomized in which the women there may not have known that they were taking aspirin and didn't actually choose to take aspirin . So they still state that the older women do benefit the most. And I don't think that the -- guidelines have changed because the new guidelines that have come out by the American Heart Association American College of Cardiology still say. That it should be an older women. When they have a risk or not and in any women who are at risk should be the ones who should be taking aspirin . risk for heart attacks and stroke. Should take a daily dose of aspirin beginning at age forty. Women should do it at age 55. Our medical editor doctor Tim Johnson has says the advice applies to virtually every adult and He is joining us now September exactly what does the studies. Well this review of studies by the preventative services task force says that basically as you point out. Men who are at risk for cardiovascular disease that basically means heart attacks and strokes. And women who are at risk. Should start taking you daily aspirin Mann of 45 women at 55 now that means. That earlier below those ages the risks of taking aspirin . Outweigh the possible benefits simply because men and women in their younger years are not at high risk for these conditions they also buys. Stopping a daily aspirin by age eighty at which point again. The risks of gastrointestinal bleeding bleeding in the stomach. Outweigh the possible benefits but this means. Broke from a practical viewpoint that almost all men and women in middle age and later years. Should consider taking a daily aspirin it's a big recommendations daily aspirin of what dosage. Well if they don't come down on that specific dosage they recommend -- but I will simply say that most experts are now convinced. That a daily baby aspirin 81 milligrams today. Provides as much protection as a higher -- the 325 adult girls. And it is safer taking that lord knows the baby aspirin so that's what I would recommend -- maybe after you and I've been talking about this for years. We know that aspirin can have beneficial effects that people at risk for stroke and heart attack. Are people actually doing it. They are not and that's what's so stunning about some of the data we've learn there's one study for example would suggest that only 16%. The men and women who should be taking a daily aspirin are doing so so I regard this as a teaching moment. There are so many men and women who should take it it cheap. It's relatively safe it's very effective this is something we're missing the -- on in this country all right but a daily baby aspirin for those at risk heart attack stroke men over 45 my recommendation yet all right Tim thanks very much. -
