Using the latest Internet phone technology. They pretended to call on behalf of the make a wish foundation and from various agencies of the federal government. Racking up new victims every day in the name of charity. Last week law enforcement agency in Costa Rica -- -- the half dozen -- -- rooms. And detained seven people in the latest effort to disrupt this massive telephone scam this -- Americans out of tens of millions of dollars. Joining me now is -- -- -- producer in the ABC news investigative unit. -- you first uncovered the story in Costa Rica how significant is this -- by Costa Rican authorities. Well it's very significant the Costa Ricans have been under a lot of pressure to take action. They believe that there are fifteen. Houses operating where the boiler rooms where they were making these calls to victims in the United States. And they found one that was operated predominantly by Costa Ricans and they raided. So what -- they use as evidence as an American evidence given to the Costa Ricans one of the things that makes these cases so complex is that. They required the statements the testimony of American victims who are all over the United States. They get those -- and in video videotaped. Depositions they send those to Costa Rica and they use those as evidence against the bad guys so what about the American law enforcement why haven't they -- -- Well we know that they've been working hard to build cases against some of these other houses there are a lot of westerners who are. Operating in Costa Rica running these houses writing the scripts. Organizing the phone calls and collecting the money. They had made an arrest in Miami one of the -- leaders made the mistake of making a trip into the United States and they nabbed them. And our belief is that they're building a pretty big case -- of that.
