WH Budget Director: GOP Plan Does Not Cut Deficit
Let's turn of the president's budget director Jack He joins us from the White there's a lot of pain. In the president's budget when He got to the doctor and and you know I think did what I say about this budget is that it has a lot of pain not sure
Let's turn of the president's budget director Jack -- He joins us from the White House this morning thanks for Doris Day mr. -- Good morning -- so let's start you another White House officials say there's a lot of pain. In the president's budget when He got to the doctor and and you have a problem He says -- the pain on the scale of one to ten how would you rate this pain. You know I think did what I say about this budget is that it has a lot of pain -- not sure which never give it but it does the job cuts the deficit in half by the end of the president's first term has 400 billion dollars savings which would bring as spending on domestic discretionary spending down to the level it was at. In the Eisenhower administration. As you know the Republicans many Republicans saying already that it doesn't go nearly. A far enough -- they've countered with a budget that actually cuts according to them more than sixty billion dollars this year. How to federal programs why can't the president go that far. But we have a responsible plan out there that. Cut spending but also reduces the deficit I think you have to look at both of those in order to see whether it's doing the job we've yet to see another plan that actually reduces the deficit. And I point to some of the cuts that were making -- real evidence that these are tough choices and I think this budget will stand the test. That we live within our means and we invest in the future we invest in education and innovationRepublicans are proposing. Well I'm saying that if you look at our budget our budget has serious cuts you know I think that today is they were trying to take a look at the whole picture. If you look at the Republican plan so far it doesn't really chart a path to deficit reduction. We all agree that we need to cut spending I don't think there's a debate about that the question is is a part of a plan that reduces the deficit. And are we asking for balance shared sacrifice and are we investing in the future as for the president's budget there were putting out today. -- -- put -- this chart. It shows that 84% of the budget . Goes to entitlements Medicare and Social Security defense Homeland Security interest on the debt that -- -- even being touched by either you. Or the Republican Party so far in the budget proposals. They've -- put forward isn't that going to be necessary to really get a handle on the US debt and deficits. George when the commission was created it was given the target of bringing the deficit down to 3% of our economy that's a level that sustainable where we're paying our current bills not adding to our debt the president's budget they were putting out today achieves that goal and it seems that. I touching not just the areas that we've been discussing earlier but by touching almost every part of the budget . I've been doing this from -- thirty years and you know I think that if you look over this course of the last three decades. It's not possible I think to come up with an example -- putting a controversial proposal -- there has really. Made the difference in terms of bridging the bipartisan chasm that you need to get something done. Finally when -- -- last budget director under President Clinton you left that job with a surplus the United States pledging allegiance to that again our lifetimes. Georgethe point where we're not adding to the debt. That's -- this budget sets of course for us to do. And it's just a down payment we then need to work together to finish the job and to get back to place where we can talk about balancing the budget . But it's gonna take awhile and it's gonna take a lot of tough decisions and hope there will be painful choices OK
