ADRIAN, Mich. -- A woman who was arrested after failing a sobriety test and told police she drank three glasses of Listerine has pleaded guilty to drunken driving.
According to Michigan law enforcement officials, Carol A. Ries, 50, pleaded guilty to operating a car under the influence on Jan. 20. Police suspected Ries had been drinking after she rear-ended another vehicle at a red light on Jan. 9.
Ries, who does not have a history of drunken driving, passed one breathalyzer test, but failed another that used different equipment. According to police, her blood alcohol level was .3, more than three times the legal limit. When investigators found a bottle of Listerine in her car, Ries told them she had had three glasses earlier in the day. According to the Web site for Pfizer Inc., the manufacturer of Listerine, original formula for the mouthwash contains 26.9 percent alcohol, more than four times that of many malt liquors. Other varieties contain 21.6 percent alcohol.
Prosecutors agreed to drop charges against Ries of having an open intoxicant in the vehicle and not having insurance. She could face up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine when she is sentenced Feb. 11.
NORCROSS, Ga. -- There's no word on what brand he preferred, but a Georgia man allegedly robbed a bank with a broken beer bottle, then stole a car and caused at least five accidents as he tried to escape.
Police and federal authorities say Bobby Tyrone Hill, 45, was carrying an empty beer bottle in a Bank of America on Jan. 25, when he approached the teller and demanded money. When the teller did not move as fast as Hill wanted, police said, he broke the bottle on the counter. After exposing the jagged edges of the broken bottle to the teller, Hill was given an undisclosed amount of cash and he fled.
