Missing Woman Family Suspects Husband

The relatives of Laci Peterson now believe the her husband may have lied to them about his wife's disappearance after detectives told them that he may have been having an extramarital affair and could be tied to her vanishing.

The Modesto Bee reported today that an unidentified member of Laci Peterson's family said that police told the family that Scott Peterson, 30, took out a $250,000 insurance policy on his wife last summer after Laci, 27, became pregnant.

The family member said police showed Laci's family pictures of the woman with whom they believe Scott was having an affair.

"I don't think she [Laci] ever saw it coming," the family member told The Modesto Bee. "As to exactly what happened to her, I don't really know."

In a press conference tonight, the missing woman's relatives confirmed in a statement that police had shown them pictures of Scott with another woman and for the first time, they appeared to waver in their support of Scott. The husband had previously denied such a relationship.

"Now, however, they believe he has lied to them about this, and possibly other things as well," said Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for the missing woman's family. "Approximately two weeks ago, Ron Grantski, Laci's stepfather, asked Scott if he had a girlfriend. Scott told him no and Ron believed him. The family is asking him to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department. Their family is the most important thing to them and if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."

Police have refused to comment on the suspected affair and their meeting with the Petersons. Despite their newly-voiced suspicions, the Petersons encouraged the public to continue looking for Laci.

‘I Really Don’t Care What People Think’

On Thursday, Scott Peterson told a television reporter he doesn't care if he is scrutinized, as long as it helps keep the spotlight on the case and brings back his wife.
