Now, to the wife caught on tape trying to hire a hitman, because she said it was easier than divorces him. She was sent to prison on tuesday. And surprisingly, her husband came to her defense. John muller has all of the details. Reporter: Julia muirfield waking up behind bars. During her sentencing, she exchanged warm smiles with the husband she plotted to the murder. And that husband, despite it all, calls her wonderful. This is the tape that sealed julia merfeld's type. It's easier than divorcing him. Reporter: The 21-year-old, caught offering a hitman $50,000 to end her husband's life. Just so she wouldn't have to end their marriage. I know what I did was wrong. And I take responsibility for it. Reporter: On tuesday, a significantly more somber merfeld, appeared in court for sentencing. But in a business senior twist, the husband, jacob, the man she said she wanted to kill, asked the judge to lighten her sentence. Forgive my wife for all she has done in this act of hatred. For this, she has been a wonderful person. Reporter: Merfeld was caught on tape, making a deal with a man she thought was a hitman for hire. It turns out, he was an undercover cop. You can do it painlessly. Reporter: She planned to pay for the murder by recovering her husband's $400,000 life insurance policy. For her, this was just as easy as getting a divorce. To me, that makes her very dangerous. I would be very concerned if i were her husband. I understand that just because I don't want to go to prison doesn't mean that i should not go. Reporter: Merfeld was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison, with a maximum of 20 years. There's crimes that i attempted, could have carried out. And that alone, honestly, is the worst punishment anyone should ever have to endure. And I will endure it for the rest of my life, every, single day. Reporter: She will stay in jail, which could have been worse, if it was not for the giveness of the man she wanted to kill. Her husband asked for no jail time at all. And the prosecutors said she acted like she was ordering
