What Is A Hypnotherapy Session Like, And How Long Might Its Effects Last?

Daniel Monti, M.D., Jefferson

Question: What is a hypnotherapy session like, and how long might its effects last? (Is it just like what you see on TV?)

Answer: The results of hypnotherapy are variable and depend upon how much it is practiced with the therapist. A typical session might include a variety of breathing techniques and different types of imagery exercises. Television often portrays hypnosis in a manner that is much more dramatic than it actually is in the clinical setting. It is not dangerous, and it is not something that can be done against your will; rather it works best with a willing participant that is allied with the health goals of the therapist. In some ways it is a skill, and the more it is practiced with the therapist the better the hypnotic state. It is also a myth that only weak or sick people are hypnotizable. Actually hypnotizability is a combination of innate factors, willingness to participate and practice.
