Question: What should we do if the sibling of our autistic child is embarrassed to have friends over?
Answer: Once siblings reach school-age and into adolescence, it's very common for them to feel embarrassed by the sibling with autistic disorder. It's very okay for parents to acknowledge that that feeling is quite typical, but to manage it by dealing with it very simply and straightforwardly.
It's best for parents to help those kids explain to their friends the nature of the disorder in very simple terms, matter-of-factly and without any shame. It's also okay to help siblings have playtime with friends, alone, without always making them involve the sibling. That's true of any kids, whether or not the sibling has autistic disorder.
