Answer: Well, basically most depressions are treated on an outpatient basis with talk therapy or medication or both. If you or your loved one has a depression that makes it impossible for them to function outside of a hospital, or if they are suicidal or dangerous to themselves, or in rare cases, dangerous to others, or the depression is causing physical symptoms like serious loss of weight or deficiency in their immune system -- getting ill all the time -- then they need to be treated in a hospital setting.
